Does anyone else think the beginning of the odd refrain “Ah! böwakawa poussé, poussé” sounds like the Hallelujah/Hare Krishna refrain from My Sweet Lord ?*

*you can ignore the other two, these are the important questions I’m curious about/would like to discuss.

I feel like that phrase is Johns interpretation of what George said, in his sort of spiritual calling.

The word poussé is a French word (an adjective formed from the past participle of the verb pousser, to be exact) that has many different meanings — one describes a wine that has become flat (“vin poussé”).  I note with amusement that “pousse-pousse” also denotes a kind of small horse-drawn carriage almost resembling a rickshaw.  However, knowing how John’s mind was fluid & receptive to thinking outside the box, I’m perfectly content with the phrase not “meaning” anything, necessarily.

However, it should be noted that the French was not what John was originally singing. He was originally singing, as he thought of his cats, “pussy, pussy”. The man from Capitol protested, believing people might think what John was singing was a thinly disguised use of vulgar slang to describe a part of the female anatomy. Which I am sure couldn’t have been further from the truth. He wasn’t the type.

It was only when Lori Burton, wife of the studio engineer Roy Cicala, suggested it be sang, “poussé, poussé,” that it was agreed the line could stay.

*Tra-la-la, I’ll just revive this dead thread here for a minute.*

This is my favorite John album of all time (even in my top ten albums of all time). It’s very soothing to me, I can just put this album on and let myself go for a little while.

It also has one of my most favourite songs ever on it. One of the most beautiful songs ever put to music. (#9 Dream.) heart

His work with Elton John on this album is great as well, Whatever Gets You Thru The Night sounds very Elton John-ish, and at the same time very Lennon-ish. A very good combination of two very talented people.

Also the song penned by Harry Nilsson (Old Dirt Road) is really beautiful. Especially how it fits well with John’s voice.

All in all, a great album. a-hard-days-night-george-9 (With the exception of Beef Jerky, which would be more enjoyable for me if it wasn’t as long.)

*End of revival*

*continues revival

Great album. Produced by John himself during the lost weekend, the recording was a little bit rushed. Old Dirt Road and #9 Dream both have a very synthetic sound, especially with the guitar tone, but it fits. I haven’t heard production like it anywhere else, and I think it fits well on the album.

But the production isn’t really what stands out most to me. The songwriting is top notch John. What You Got is so simple, yet very powerful combined with his vocal performance it is extremely impactful. #9 Dream reminds me of I Am The Walrus , Come Together and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds , where he pulls off a ridiculous lyric in spectacular fashion, showing you of some hidden genius within. One of the best solo albums to hear all the way through in my opinion.

Very Underrated.

Listened to it fully for the first time last night (I’ve yet to fully listen to all of Johns solo discography) and I have to say I was pretty impressed. I didn’t really notice any weak tracks and the overall album just seemed to have a real energy behind it. I also liked the fact that Johns songwriting was pretty wacky and free throughout.

I need to listen to it more but I can see myself liking it as much as Imagine . I don’t think it will overtake Plastic Ono Band anytime soon though two-virgins

The swearing on ‘Plastic Ono Band’ was edited out in some countries, Australia for one.

Back in the olden thymes of Silly Girl ancient history, I used to annoy everyone with my overuse of the ‘Stay On Topic!’ smiley. People would tell me this.

BoT; I wonder what this album would’ve been like if Yoko had been more present at the time of its making. Probably more stressed feeling. But I dunno.

No. Just taking a stroll down Memory Lane. If I wanted to tell you to stop using the smiley, I would PM you.

#9 Dream has always reminded me of George Harrison … the slide guitar and the aforementioned similarity to My Sweet Lord .

Probably, since their relationship was stressed at the time. But Yoko was musically good for him generally.

The greatest album John Lennon ever made, but that’s my personal opinion. What You Got is absolutely great. #9 Dream has always been one of my favourites of John Lennon songs, and can absolutely compare with his best songs he made with the Beatles.
