I get a kick out of seeing John sing in the studio.

Yeah – the Rock n’ Roll/Slippin’ and Slidin’ sessions were good for this.

Picked up a copy of it yesterday. Looks incredible in the packaging.

Not had much of a chance to hear anything as working and will be for the next few days.

I guess I will have to wait until Monday to find out why they charged me for something that didn’t ship.

Still no reply to any of my emails, except the one email they sent to confirm information I already gave them.  Probably going to file a complaint and dispute the charges.

I’ve canceled the order and have a box set and blu-ray on the way to the house now in time for John’s birthday.

Hopefully they honor the cancellation and I don’t have to dispute the charges.

I got my Ultimate Collection (from Amazon) yesterday and spent a few hours with it.  I’ve only listened to the CDs so far, and they are great.

I’m very pleased with everything that is included.  My only slight concerns are: how much of this do I already have in the Anthology set and the bonus discs of the Signature box set?  For instance, I’m pretty sure How Do You Sleep? in the Anthology set is Take 6, which is included in the Ultimate Collection.  Same with Imagine (Take 1).  I’ll be digging into that closer over the weekend.  It doesn’t help that the Anthology tracks aren’t always explained fully in the liner notes (ie, not usually labeled with (Take 6) or whatever).  Another very minor nitpick is on the credits page (near the beginning of the book) all the names are lowercase EXCEPT for “klaus Voormann”.  His last name is capitalized but no one else’s is!  It shouldn’t bug me, but it does 🙂

Part of me also feels like they really dug deep to fill out this set, almost to a fault. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it and cherish it, and it’s amazing how much mileage they could squeeze out of just 10 47-year-old songs. Do I really need the 4.0 quadraphonic mixes? No way, but I LOVE that they were remastered and included. Do I need the mono interviews on CD and Blu-ray audio? No way, but I LOVE that they included them. I see it all too often with other bands and artists, where I seem to be begging to include hi-res audio on modern formats but all the hipster brain donors want to buy music on vinyl and even cassette (which is making something of a comeback).

I imagine (…ahem) that we will see similar treatment given to Abbey Road ‘s 50th Anniversary next year.  Because there won’t be much to improve on sonically, we’ll see lots of flowery words and descriptions as in this Imagine Ultimate Collection.  For instance, I read of the 5.1 mixes that (paraphrasing) it’s great to walk around the room to each speaker, listening to each performer.  C’mon, really??  That’s kind of what a multi-channel mix is, not to mention that’s actually NOT how you are supposed to listen to it.  (It’s all about that listener’s sweet spot!)

Regarding the content and stories, I think that’s what I’m enjoying the most.  A lot of the information, especially John’s comments, seem to get repeated multiple times but I’m ok with that.  I’ve always held John in high regard, a hero and martyr for love, and over the years I’ve learned he wasn’t as perfect as Yoko would have us believe these days.  This Imagine set helps (me, at least) see how things were at that time.  It’s hard seeing pics of George in these sessions, working on How Do You Sleep? in particular.  I thought they wanted to split, but George is still right there with John in 71.  How did John sing the ultimate song of peace as track 1 and follow later with rock music’s first “diss track”, being so ugly to Paul?  Was he more of a hypocrite than I want to admit to myself?  He says of imagining no possessions that he didn’t really mean his *physical* possessions.  He admits his shortcomings, saying it’s a neurosis, but to my mind that sounds like just a lame excuse.  He had more money than any one man needs, as many men do, but usually they don’t write popular songs about giving it all up.

I’m eager to enjoy the 5.1 mixes soon and suspect they will be my go-to in the future for this album.  I’m happy they gave the outtakes the 5.1 treatment as well.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the Elements mixes. They sounded hokey on paper, and I suppose they are, but darn if they aren’t nice to listen to.  Anyroad, I think I’ve babbled enough.  Love you John and happy late birthday!

Hate to correct you again, and point you to the same artist, but Dylan’s 1965 Positively 4th Street predates it, an attack on an unidentified individual or individuals from the Greenwich Village folk scene who criticised Bob for going electric.

You’ve got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin’
You’ve got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that’s winnin’

You say I let you down, ya know its not like that
If you’re so hurt, why then don’t you show it?
You say you’ve lost your faith, but that’s not where its at
You have no faith to lose, and ya know it

I know the reason, that you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you’re in with
Do you take me for such a fool, to think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don’t know to begin with?

You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say “how are you?”, “good luck”, but ya don’t mean it
When you know as well as me, you’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once and scream it

No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I’d rob them
And tho I know you’re dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don’t you understand, its not my problem?

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is to see you

And there’s many other Dylan “diss songs” that predate How Do You Sleep?.

My second and fourth discs I think must have been stuck to the packaging or something…they came out with some weird-looking surface marks on them. But they play fine.

I’m listening to them in sort of a weird order. I played discs 2 and 4 to see if they worked, and now I’m hearing disc 2 again. Really enjoying it so far.

I ended up taking all the discs out and putting them in my own paper sleeves.

After months of waiting, a bunch of emails apologizing for delays, another email informing it was dispatched…i got an email from udiscover a few days ago saying that as the courier couldn’t get in touch with me the item couldn’t be delivered so it was returned and they will send me a refund (which i already got). The (not so) funny thing is that no courier ever got in touch with me about this. I sent them an email where i explained this and that i didn’t want a refund but my bundle in my pocket but i had no answer.
I’m highly disappointed and annoyed as i’m gonna have to order it again and wait for another set of weeks for it to arrive. One thing i’m sure of is that i don’t wanna order from udiscover again, so if any of you, good people, know from any eurpean store to order it just let me know plz.

That is plain awful, @Shamrock Womlbs. paul-mccartney

I emailed them at least 5 times before my bundle finally arrive. This whole release has been one big mess.

I had a quick look, and it seems you can get the various components of what is in the bundle from Amazon in Europe. I’ll see if I can find the bundle together sometime today.

Also, I guess you could consider Sexy Sadie a diss track, way before HDYS.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

i’ve spent today and yesterday listening to imagine over and over. for the most part, i like this album. i like it a lot more than john’s previous one plastic ono band (recap: i thought plastic ono band was great, but too depressing for my taste.)

the three songs i love the most are jealous guy, crippled inside and oh yoko. imagine and how do you sleep are also important, so i’ll give them longer thoughts as well. but first, short reviews of the other 5 songs.

It’s So Hard – it’s just pure blues rock and it’s really cool, gets me bobbing my head as i listen to it. love the sax and strings juxaposition.

i don’t wanna be a soldier mama- more blues rock, and it reminds me of the later track how do you sleep at bits.

gimme some truth- more blues rock and i’m loving it. john is putting so much power and feelings into this and it feels like any moment, john’s gonna stop playing the song and is gonna just start screaming the lyrics into the microphone with a few curse words mixed in.

oh my love- this is a more soft introspective love song which i usually expect from john (unless he’s doing a heavy blues rock thing) and i like this kind of stuff from john.

how- looking at the tracklisting, i really expected this to follow up how do you sleep. like he’s continuing the question from the last song. but instead he’s just crying for help. “how can i feel something if i just don’t know how to feel?” that line gets me. it’s a really sweet song. it’s depressing, but sweet. most of us are lost in this world not sure of who we are and what we are doing. and someone saying that they’re going through that too makes this song really comforting.

—————————————–

-jealous guy

jealous guy is a beautiful song, i’ve loved it for a long time before i picked up the album. i understand how he feels. he’s not just sorry about how he made the person he’s singing about feel (which i think he’s singing about cynthia but i could be wrong) but i think when he realized that he put her in pain, he felt guilt and pain at the realization. i could just be projecting my own situations onto that, but that’s kinda how i interpret. and to top it off, his pain caused her pain which also makes it hard do deal with. realizing your suffering took others down with you isn’t fun.

-crippled inside

when this song starts out, there’s a guitar playing softly but rickety at the same time. which is a nice transition from the first track. and the country tone makes it like a depressing (yet still upbeat) version of ringo’s first song Don’t Pass Me By . and at bits you could even sing some of that song’s lyrics over this one. but again, this song is very depressing. the upbeatness to it makes it feel disjointed but in a good way,

-oh yoko!

so, i’m gonna admit that i have a bias against yoko. when i read the name, i thought it was gonna be some crap i would not like at all. but i hear it, and it’s just a sweet love song. like something i’d expect from paul but as written by john. and it’s wonderful and sweet and upbeat and i love it.

-imagine

this song, i always compared to star trek. i can bet he wasn’t thinking of star trek at all, but it’s where my mind went. in the futuristic world of star trek they’ve reached post-scarcity and they abolished currency within their society, they also are a one world government and borders are basically non-existant on earth. there’s no squabbles over “my god is bigger than your god”, all the religions co-exist peacefully (which is what john meant when he said “and no religion too” but it’s hard to say “and no fighting over religion” in the rhythm of the song.) star trek is a good show, and imagine is a good song.

-how do you sleep?

i saved this one for last. my paul-bias is gonna get in the way of this, but let’s push forward. it starts with the sound of instruments playing at random and tuning up, so it kinda reminded me of the start of pepper. which makes that first line sharper. paul is my favourite beatle, i love paul to death, so this song makes me sick to my stomach. it’s the sharpest sounding blues rock john’s ever played, and to top it off, george is right there on his guitar. i bet this cut like a knife when john heard it. i know paul put his little digs at john in ram, but this is way more obvious and heavy hitting than pauls was. honestly, it makes me feel sick to my stomach just hearing it. they were like brothers. i know the breakup was rough, but jeez this is too much.

—————————————————————————————————–

all in all, a lot of good tracks on this album and a lot of psychedelic blues rock for the bulk of it. loved it, but how do you sleep kinda sours it for me.

next up on my list is  a couple singles and then wings’ wild life. can’t wait.

Two things:

1. Jealous Guy is amazing, I agree a-hard-days-night-george-9

2. I’m pretty sure he’s singing about Yoko in Jealous Guy , seeing as he’d broken up with Cyn a while back… I could be mistaken though.

could’ve been talking about every relationship he had been in overall not just cyn and yoko. there are interviews where he had talked about some moments with cyn and the way he described how he felt in those moments was a lot like in the song.

Yessssssss. I would say it’s my favourite on the album, but then again I can’t choose. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

I relate to all of this, but for some reason I really love this song. If it wasn’t so anti-Paul it could have been much better, but I understand John had some feelings.
