14:Dizzy Miss Lizzy (3/10)

I don't "hate" this song but i still don't like it. It's a big meh for me.

13:The Night Before (4/10)

As i mentioned above. I just don't care for this song. It's not a bad song (it's actually better than Dizzy Miss Lizzy ). It's just not my taste.

12:Another Girl (4/10)

This song just feels like a filler. A empty filler.

11:You're Going To Lose That Girl (5/10)

This one does also feel like a filler. It feels a little bit less like a filler than Another Girl tho.

10:Act Naturally (5/10)

The ringo song of the album. I like Ringo's voice so this song isn't so bad.

9:You Like Me Too Much (5/10)

George can do better than this. Still a good song.

8:Tell Me What You See (6/10)

A good song. Might even be rating this a bit too low.

7:I Need You (7/10)

A great song. I almost love it. Almost.

6:Yesterday (7/10)

A masterpiece for sure. But i think i've heard it too much. Getting kinda sick of it.

5:Help ! (7/10)

The same as above. I haven't heard this the same amount of time tho.

4:Ticket To Ride (8/10)

Used to love this a lot when i was new to the Beatles. I still love it but just not as much as i used to do.

3:It's Only Love (8/10)

Not the best lyrics but a great melody. I love the chorus.

2:I've Just Seen A Face (8/10)

Amazing song. I do love the verses more than the chorus tho.

1:You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (10/10)

Inspired by Dylan i guess. But i like John's voice way more than Dylans. Amazing song.

Also i rank 1-10 in Beatles number.

A song with 3/10 can still be good. It's just that Beatles are an amazing band. Can't rank all of them 10!

We were discussing this recently on the Hoffman forum.  I think Help ! is not one of the better Beatles albums.  Sure it has lots of great songs and I've played all of them countless times since the 1970's, but when you really analyze it and compare it to other landmark albums like Rubber Soul or A Hard Days Night, those albums are far better.  Help is a transitional album, not a statement like the other two were.  The interesting thing was a lot of songs were recorded for Help .  For Rubber Soul , the band was pressed to finish on time and had to come up with some last minute songs like You Won't See Me and Girl (good job boys!).  Help had a lot to choose from.  In addition to the 14 songs on the album, you had Yes It Is , I'm Down (both used as B-sides), Bad Boy , If You've Got Trouble , and That Means A Lot .  On top of that, the song Wait was also recorded for Help (although technically finished for Rubber Soul ).  So there were 20 songs to choose from for the album.  They made a lot more money putting their originals on the B-sides of the big singles so I could understand why Yes It Is and I'm Down were used that way.

Taking into account the songs used for the movie, I would make the following changes to Help just to improve the overall album.  I would drop Dizzy Miss Lizzy for I'm Down (a cover for an original).  I would drop You Like Me Too Much and Tell Me What You See for Yes It Is and That Means A Lot .  Lastly I would bring in Bad Boy for Act Naturally although it's a toss up to give Ringo a song.  I would not use If You've Got Trouble , that is a total throwaway.

Side One:

Help

The Night Before

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

I Need You

Another Girl

You're Gonna Lose That Girl

Ticket To Ride

Side Two:

I've Just Seen A Face

It's Only Love

Yesterday

Bad Boy or Act Naturally

Yes It Is

That Means A Lot

I'm Down

14. You Like Me Too Much - Just not very memorable, and bland instrumentation.

13. Tell Me What You See - Same as You Like Me Too Much .

12. I Need You - Great guitar work.

11. Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Great song, but feels out of place of the whole album.

10. It's Only Love - Another great song, just not much to it.

9. Act Naturally - One of Ringo's best.

8. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - A classic acoustic song.

7. Another Girl - Fantastic song with fantastic lyrics.

6. The Night Before - I love the guitar solo and the backing vocals.

5. I've Just Seen A Face - I like it better as an opener for the US Rubber Soul , but great song overall.

4. Help ! - One of John's best songs lyrically.

3. You're Going To Lose That Girl - I love the lead vocals and backing vocals working together on this one.

2. Ticket To Ride - Just an awesome rocker, and I love the coda.

1. Yesterday - This song always hits me in the feels.

All you need is hot potatoes...

14. You Like Me Too Much - the intro and electric piano are interesting, but this song still goes nowhere

13. Dizzy Miss Lizzy - that damn two-fret guitar lick gets awful repetitive...I'd like the song 40% more if the entire first instrumental chorus was eliminated and the song began with John's vocal alone and the band kicking into action on the word "...Lizzy"

12. I Need You - song is just OK and George's rough volume-pedal work distracts (but I still give him credit for trying it out)

11. You're Gonna Lose That Girl - nice bongos and call-and-response vocals

10. It's Only Love - pleasantly melancholy, nice chords and internal rhymes

9. Tell Me What You See - this song isn't rated highly but something about John and Paul's unison vocal mesmerizes me

8. Act Naturally - a good song seemingly custom-made for Ringo

7. Another Girl - I like the momentum in this song, the lead guitar commentary throughout, the way it keeps stopping on the words "...for I have got." (And the "Help !" video is a visual delight)

6. The Night Before - more of that electric piano that spices up so much of the album

5. Yesterday - the quality of this song and the next four is unassailable

4. I've Just Seen A Face

3. Help !

2. Ticket To Ride

1. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

Someone said 'What were you gonna do when it's all finished,' and I said 'I don't know but it'd be good fun being a DJ.' And since then I've become a DJ, only by word of mouth, you know. SO any minute now you'll read, 'Ringo leaves to become a DJ' but it's not true. - Ringo Starr

I'll do one of these.

14. Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Terrible song. I always wonder why they chose to cover it. The whole song is built around a riff that would be better off as the soundtrack to a transition between scenes in a cartoon.

13. You Like Me Too Much - I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics, and agree with vonbontee that it has very little direction.

12. Another Girl - Standard tune. They call it a throwaway and I agree. If it was really written from the heart then Paul would be a major asshole.

11. Act Naturally - This is a nice little tune. I love the way the backup vocals come in on "well I bet you"

10. Tell Me What You See - Suberb verses, but the refrain is a little plain and predictable.

9. The Night Before - Great song with great vocals on top. The melody line on "when I held you near you were so sincere" is splendid.

8. I Need You - early George songwriting. Some of his songs have this innate peculiarity to them that only can come from him. This is one of those songs. A lot of people don't like the pedal guitar and the slightly off beat rhythm, but I dig it.

7. Its Only Love - See the "wheres the love for Its Only Love?" Thread.

6. You're Gonna Lose That Girl - Awesome from the get go. I'm always reminded of the great scene from the movie where Ringo falls through the floor after the take, but the song itself is brilliant. The falsetto soars and the backup vocals are catchy as hell, but I especially love the modulation to the bridge.

My top five is the same as @vonbontee's in a slightly different order:

5. I've Just Seen A Face - I was turned onto this song from SNL 40 and never looked back.

4. Help ! - awesome opener with a lot of meaning.

3. You've Got To Hide Yor Love Away - Hey! Undeniably good music here.

2. Ticket To Ride - My baby don't care! The riff, the drums, the harmonies... Landmark Beatles

1. Maybe its the obvious choice, but come on, it is an amazing song.

"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"

-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

I don't usually do these but here goes nothing:

14. You Like Me Too Much (pure filler, the only reason this song is even on here is because they needed 2 songs for George)

13. Yesterday (a good song that got so overplayed)

12. Act Naturally (Ringo should stick to drumming, although I do like George's lead parts)

11. I Need You (this album sure was a weak spot for George)

10. Ticket To Ride (good effort but doesn't grab me the same way other songs do)

9. Dizzy Miss Lizzy (I would've ranked this song higher but George's lead guitar is so basic and uncreative, Lil' Wayne could play it)

8. The Night Before (good job, I like how the solo is played in octaves, which will later be repeated for the solo in Dear Prudence )

7. It's Only Love (I like this song, very poetic and the whammy sound is great as well)

6. Help ! (one of my favorite Beatle title tracks, I wish The Beatles didn't drop it from their setlist in 1966)

5. Another Girl (another great song)

4. I've Just Seen A Face (can't go wrong here, just 3 guys jamming out on acoustic guitars and I love it)

3. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (very Dylan like, I like this song)

2. Tell Me What You See (very relaxed and John's Fender Strat sounds great strumming those open chords)

1. You're Going To Lose That Girl (this is Help !'s version of Nowhere Man and deserves top spot on this list)

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

14. Tell Me What You See - I don't hate this song but it is the weakest track on this album in my opinion.

13. You Like Me Too Much - I only slightly like this song more than Tell Me What You See .

12. Act Naturally - Not the best Ringo song but a fun one.

11. Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Nice performance from John but the band sound weak in my opinion.

10. It's Only Love - Good chorus and not so great verses but an alright track.

9. Yesterday - Well written and well performed but overplayed and I am a little sick of it.

8. I Need You - Not a bad effort from George who is starting to find his feet but still not as good as his band mates.

7. Another Girl - A fun little pop/rock song.

6. You're Going To Lose That Girl - The harmonies and the lyrics win me over.

5. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - A Dylan influenced acoustic track. Some of Lennon's best lyrics.

4. The Night Before - Not everyone's cup of tea but when this song starts I really enjoy it.

3. I've Just Seen A Face - One of Macca's best songs.

2. Help ! - Another great lyric from Lennon. I love the back and forth vocals.

1. Ticket To Ride - One of The Beatles all time great rock songs.

And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

No idea how I would rank this album. 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy would be #14 as it is so out of place after 'Yesterday ' but I do really like the song when played outside of the album. Everything else would take longer than the album to list as it's such a fabulous album to fly thru when playing.

Doing these song rankings can be a little hard because opinions can change and on a different day you might like some songs better than other songs but it is a fun little exercise anyway.

Responding because I have a very different order, it seems...

Growing up Help was always my favorite Beatles album. I didn't get into post 1967 beatles until my late 20s. So I really love Help and don't see it as filler. It's interesting to see that other people generally have a consensus that it is a lesser album and full of filler songs.

These are my favorites:

1. Ticket To Ride . 10/10. Perfect Beatles song I think.

2. Help 10/10

3. I Need You 9/10

- I just like listening to this one. I like the guitar tone. For some reason even the simple Beatles songs really translate for me emotionally, so I feel for George in this one.

4. You Like Me Too Much 9/10

- Everyone seems to rank this song last but I just love it. Love the intro. The song may not be as complicated or interesting but I think it's playful, flirtatious, and actually expresses kind of a tender moment if you imagine the situation when this conversation happens. It's fun to listen to!

5. I've Just Seen A Face 9/10

- Also ranked low by a lot of people but I love it. I love the intro. I think the fast pace and how the words stream together without any rests really works because it evokes that energetic, impatient feeling of just meeting someone and needing to find out more about them.

6. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away 9/10

- I don't listen to this song as often but I admit it's one of their best on the album.

7. Act Naturally 8/10

- Fun, sad, song. Super relatable. This song delights me when I hear it. I love any Ringo song.

8. Another Girl 7/10

9. The Night Before . 7/10

- I love the tone of Paul's voice in this one.

10.You're Gonna Lose That Girl. 7/10

11. Tell Me What You See 7/10

- I actually really like this song. I love listening to it. See my problem with Help is that there are too many GOOD songs on the album, so ones I like end up in #11.

12. It's Only Love 5/10

13. Yesterday 5/10

- I know it is one of The Beatles Songs but I don't enjoy listening to it as much, so that's why I didn't really include it in the ranking. It is good but I don't even think of it when I think of Help . I think of it like it's own entity separate from Help , haha.

14. Dizzy Miss Lizzy 1/10

- This is the one song I could really do without. Feels like it belongs on Beatles For Sale .

This was a really really hard album for me to rank.

  1. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
  2. Ticket To Ride
  3. I've Just Seen A Face
  4. It's Only Love
  5. Tell Me What You See
  6. You're Going To Lose That Girl
  7. The Night Before
  8. You Like Me Too Much
  9. Another Girl
  10. I Need You
  11. Help !
  12. Yesterday
  13. Dizzy Miss Lizzy
  14. Act Naturally

"Act Naturally " is one of the few Beatles songs I don't even have a copy of anymore. I hated ranking "Help !" & "Yesterday " so low. I've never really liked "Yesterday " very much though. As for "Help !", well, I've heard that so much in my life that it's become like gum you've been chewing so long that it's lost its flavor. Good song, and I do listen to it somewhat regularly, but, I just couldn't rank it higher. I think "Tell Me What You See ", is one of the most underrated Beatles songs, and that it's the most interesting pre-Revolver song. It's weird, and shows them trying different sounds and trying out new musical ideas that they didn't try before.

Tell Me What You See is moving up on mine. Probably 3 or 4 at this point.

"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

I think Help ! is a pretty easy album to rank. I love every track.

My list:

14. You Like Me Too Much - Not a terrible song, just not very memorable. The lyrics are pretty weak as well.

13. Act Naturally - I actually prefer this song to What Goes On , it suits Ringo far better. Gets boring after too many listens though.

12. Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Great vocal performance by John but the guitar riff just gets annoying after a while.

11. Tell Me What You See - Even though it's kind of fillerish this is the good kind of filler. Good vocal performance by Paul and John.

10. Another Girl - Good song but it doesn't have too much going for it. The weakest track on side one for me.

9. It's Only Love - Lovely song but the lyrics ruin it a bit. If they were better it could have been a top 5 track.

8. Yesterday - Undoubtedly an amazing song just very overplayed. I enjoy other songs on the album more.

7. I Need You - A very underrated George song. I love the volume pedal guitar technique used by George.

6. The Night Before - Great rocking track and I love Ringos drumming.

5. You're Going To Lose That Girl - Love this track. Has some brilliant harmonies and the lyrics are pretty strong.

4. Help ! - The lyrics and tempo are what make this song so brilliant. Probably a bit overplayed though.

3. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - Incredible Dylan-esque singalong song containing Johns best lyrics up to that point.

2. I've Just Seen A Face - You can't really fault this song. It's a pretty unique song for the Beatles as well. Love it.

1. Ticket To Ride - For some reason the song never gets boring even though it's played a lot. Everything about it is awesome.

I think that's a great list although I prefer What Goes On to Act Naturally because Act Naturally is a cover whereas What Goes On is an original song and Ringo even helped write it.

Yep that's a fair point, I can see why you'd prefer it for that reason. I think from a song standpoint Act Naturally is generally more fun and less grating then What Goes On though.

Glad you approve of my listahdn_ringo_09
