I guess I could add another line to my zignature for

https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..ch-thread/

But, to be honest, after learning more about how some people use the forum, I have resolved myself to the fact that people are going to create new threads when perfectly good threads on the topics exist no matter what methods we try to stop it from happening. But, it’s ok. I don’t want people to refrain from posting because they don’t know where to put something. We have a quick response team who can get new posts moved if they need to be moved.

Now, as to which threads should be kept as is and which ones should be merged…I was up at 4 in the morning a week or so ago emailing with ahdn_george_01 about this very issue. (I couldn’t sleep because my mind was so full of BB-related stuff. I heard my phone beep to tell me I had a new email. It was from Joe so I just stayed awake and conversed with him). He gave me some really good advice, as usual. Also, if I am ever in doubt if a thread should stay or be merged, I consult mmm. And as you can tell from mmm’s post above, he consults me.

For some of the other tidying up issues (some of the merges and possible locking of threads)…imagine a massive heal/hurt game going on between the mods and admin. What stays? What goes? (It hasn’t gone quite that far.) We are trying our best to find the right balance and do what is best for the forum.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Couldn’t have said it better myself.

When this whole idea came about, I was all for the cleanups/moves. Then, it got so convoluted, I got a headache and backed off. AG and mmm are doing a stellar job of merging and I would just get in the way or make things worse if I tried to get involved. I like the idea of just merging when opportunities present themselves instead of hunting for said opportunities. The latter is too much like work and this site is supposed to be fun.

The cataloger in me just wants things orderly so I get a sense of “fun” from finding this old thread work to do (and I am learning about the Beatles in the process when I read the old threads).

Hum, now I’m thinking that since mmm likes this thread work too, perhaps he should go to library school. I think he has what it takes! Surely we can get him in on a scholarship.

No worries, Zig. Thread work is only one part of the mod work around here. We are all glad you are a mod for so many reasons. Your people skills have rescued me more than once and in more than one way. Your sense of humor, your Beatles knowledge, and your longevity on the forum are a steadying force for us all.

I like things being ordered and it bugs me heavily when i find threads and posts in the wrong place and therefore i enjoy the clean-up process, not that it doesnt become intensive when you have 6 threads that could be merged but the finer details need explored (time stamp being one of the biggest factors). One example is that there were 11 or 12 different threads for the ‘Living In the Material World’ documentary, after much discussion and working out its down to 3, one each for the book, album and film. That is rewarding and wouldn’t have been carried out if someone hadn’t of posted a question on George that required being worked out if it needed to be merged elsewhere or not.

Its all about balance and not letting it become a drag and stopping the enjoyment of being on the forum. Ultimately the mods are here to ensure the forum is enjoyable for for all (including themselves) and functioning properly and each one who has had the position has brought different elements to the role for the benefit of the site. Plus the site would just be weird if Zig wasnt a mod, i think it would implode.

Hi all,

If you have suggestions for possible thread merges or moves, would you please PM them to mmm and me? It will help keep the threads on track (threads are derailed plenty enough ahdn_paul_02 with out merge talk happening in them).

Thanks,
Ahhh Girl

@Ahhh Girl said
Joe, in the forum’s advanced search box, can you make the default be to search Topic Titles Only? The forum search box is best used to search for threads/thread titles. A Google search works better for finding information in posts.

I personally would like the other default to be for the search to search All Forums instead of Current Forum, but you might want to get input from others on how they use the search function and how they would feel about that change.

Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

I can’t change the search box – it does what it does. Sorry.

While this isn’t a massive problem, I wonder if there is some way of informing people if they are choosing (or changing to) a username already in use. Duplicate usernames never used to be a problem before we got mentions, we could tell the difference by avatars, but now we have mentions it can be confusing when identical names pop up when trying to mention someone, and in those circumstances the right person may not be receiving the mentions. And the more people join us, the chances are of more duplicate Beatley usernames.

It seems not. The only options are to stop people from changing their username display name, or to politely ask that they change it to something more original.

I recently had an email from a Hey Jude who was getting notifications intended for the ‘original’ Hey Jude . There should really be a duplicate check in place but as far as I know the functionality isn’t there. Perhaps I’ll suggest it to Simple Press.

Thanks for that, @Joe.

The Hey Jude problem has been solved. I spoke to the “new” Hey Jude over the weekend and pointed out the problem. She has added an ! to her name.

It would be a good suggestion to Simple Press, as I know it can be done from the amount of sites I’ve joined where “Username Already In Use” has popped up, and I’ve had to come with another.

^ I am testing a few things out, and I can’t change my name to some one else’s display name it seems though I can change it to their original user name like I just did with Kermy. Wonder what would happen if the user tries to change their name back when someone else is using it.

I’d like to humbly protest the new ad by ask.com saying “You have 2 private messages waiting.” I consider myself fairly savvy, but I did click on it, as it was right where the inbox button is, and in similar  font.  If anyone does fall for it, they will get a whole mess of malware, bad browser add-ons, adware.  Ask.com should be avoided if possible.  One example:  It makes the Ask.com search bar the default, but it’s matching & filtering/ranking algorithms are absolutely horrible. It sucks!  And it’s a real hassle getting it all straightened out and back to normal.  Sorry to end up ranting but ask.com has been a boil on my neck for a long time!

If its the one right up the top of the page you can close it as there is an option in the top right hand corner. I got rid of mine and sent feedback saying it was irrelevant.  If not i dont see it.

I was wondering…is it possible to create something where we get a notification (similar to the “so-and-so mentioned you…”) whenever someone thanks us for anything? Just as a way to invite or initiate further commentary on a particular subject or remark? Just for myself, I know I’m more likely to revisit an old thread I have limited interest in if somebody comments upon a single post I may have made, i.e. by thanking me for it. Plus, often times I’m at my work computer (where the “@” thing doesn’t work at all) but want to alert somebody, so the thanking would function as an alternate method of doing so.

And maybe, if it’s possible, we can also further give people the option of opting OUT of being so notified? Like, as something they can turn off on the “options” menu. Assuming they don’t like the idea of receiving notifications for mere thankings all the time.

I don’t think so. Thanks are intended as a quick thumbs-up or acknowledgement to avoid someone having to submit a post to say so. Having notifications would probably make things very cluttered, but the option isn’t currently there anyway.

Some forums have rankings to show the most helpful/thanked posters, but I’m not sure this is the right forum for that.
