I was reading an article by mysterious musicologist & mystic Krick Stahlschwanz that said that George’s first interest in exotic instruments was the Vulcan Arse Flute.
What sounds like volume pedal guitar part on ‘I Need You ‘ is actually a rather amateur attempt on the VAF.
He picked it up in a junk shop during his first visit to Hamburg when he was a very young man. He gave it up because the Ferengi anuspiece recommended and supplied to him didn’t really fit properly and so the blow back valves were a bit dodgy: not a good situation! (Ferengi anuspieces are generally better suited for male humans than Vulcan ones as that part of the human anatomy is more Ferengi like than Vulcan. Female humans are best served by a Cardassian aunuspiece.) If you listen to the track OOPS’ed you can hear studio chatter (JL & RS) going ‘Arghhh!’ as they avoided the splatter of his les than perfect enfesseure*. Of course, as usual, the VAF was nothing new to G H Martin. He had used one on a Rolf Harris tune in 1961 (‘Oh Bugger My Koala Burst In The Night'.
*enbouchure of course not quite the right word when speaking of VAF!
Thank you.
