Offline Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp has the ability to put a smile on your face from the first notes to the very last. It has always been a favorite of mine. It really does take you on a journey through his Friar Park. Lovely video Zig.

Offline This album was the first (and only) Post-Beatles album I own right now. I LOVE it.
I just became fond of Harrison because he was the under dog of that group. He wrote my favorite song of The Beatles (Gently Weeps) and I was just amazed by how good he was getting as a songwriter.
This album has some gems. I think my only problem is the wall of sound with this album. I can barely hear George on some of the songs! I haven't listened to them in headphones in a while so I will give it a try soon to see if I can make out what he says better.
The album is a classic though and I'm glad George stuck to his guns and made the album he wanted to make instead of trying to be popular. Fantastic album!
Try to realize it's all within yourself, no one else can make you change....

Yeah, that wall of sound irritates me too. It's funny to read George's liner notes for the 2000 reissue, how he tries not to dis Phil Spector while indicating that he's not entirely happy with the way it sounds.

I like the wall of sound for the 60's girl groups (Ronette's, et al) but I too wish it wasn't on this album. Geoge's songs, to me, are so much better with a more pure sound.

Offline I actually like the wall of sound. There are some songs where that kind of production fits in my opinion, Wah-Wah , What Is Life and Awaiting On You All in particular. But I also agree that there are some songs that would sound better without the wall of sound. I've heard a demo version of Run Of The Mill with just George and a guitar and it sounds just lovely, much like the demo of While My Guitar Gently Weeps , but the released version still sounds good. For some reason I find some of the production on Living in the Material World and Dark Horse to be a bit off because I feel like his voice is a bit buried in some songs.

Let It Down is a highlight of the album but Georges demo of the track is just as good. For those who love All Things Must Pass (the album) you should check out the demos George ran thru that are out there – if you havent yet already.

Yes, that’s the edition I have. I don’t think the updated version of MSL is that bad. Ok, it doesn’t live up to the fabulous original, but it’s interesting to hear another arrangement.
I agree with some of the other comments- the jam tracks are weird! Luckily, they come at the end of the second CD, and so don’t ruin the album. All in all, I’m very impressed with this album, and listen to it quite often. Thank you, George, for ATMP !

Let’s not forget that this is the biggest selling solo Beatles album in history and dwarfs the second biggest which is ‘Band On The Run ‘ I do feel that some of the songs are a little too long and am not a huge fan of the ‘Wall Of Sound’ effect that Spector used on this album but all in all, a terrific release. The jam session was just thrown in as an extra without an additional cost. Sometimes I wish though that ATMP should have been release as a single album. He could have probably made a couple of separate releases from this but since he had so much back material, I guess he just wanted to get it all out at once and start clean with his second release ‘LITMW’

I quite like the Apple Jams, Johnny’s Birthday is especially enjoyable, not that i play them regularly.
Joe, i have that 2001 box remaster. Not a big fan of My Sweet Lord (2000) but im not a massive fan of My Sweet Lord . Its okay if played on the radio but its not something i play otherwise.
Supposedly there was another remaster released in 2010 on George’s website to mark its 40th anniversary. Does anyone know if that was less Spectorised or in anyway different to the other versions?

I prefer the original mix of ‘My Sweet Lord ‘ over the 2001 version though I do like Sam Brown’s backgrounds on the newer version.

As with the White Album being the top-selling Beatles album, that’s because it’s a multi-record package and it’s sales are therefore doubled/tripled. Band On The Run sold more actual copies. (For what it’s worth!)

In regards to the album’s size, Harrison stated “I didn’t have many tunes on Beatles records, so doing an album like All Things Must Pass was like going to the bathroom and letting it out.”
That’s from Wikipedia. Still trying to figure out how you deduced diarrhea from that!

Offline Someone compared it to like having diarrhea, i have no idea who. I suppose if you have diarrhea then you hope you can get to a bathroom and let it out. To continue the comparison theme you could say that whilst part of The Beatles George’s songwriting was like having constipation. He had all these songs inside but couldnt get them out.

Ah, then ignore me! Tbf the constipation/diarrhea metaphor is kind of brilliant..! It must have been just so frustrating for George as a song writer during the last few albums.

Offline Cant imagine how frustrating it would have been having to sit thru endless rehearsals of Across The Universe , Maxwells Silver Hammer and long monotonous jams yet couldnt get any interest from John or Paul for All Things Must Pass . Listening to some of those recordings is hard enough at times, the thought of having to sit there day after day

Really a fine album, features many great songs, although I think many george beatles songs are better than the atmp songs (no wonder many songs were rehearsed by the beatles during the get back sessions but they recorded something, Old Brown Shoe , Here Comes The Sun , For You Blue and I Me Mine which are all better than many atmp songs). Nevertheless I think I Me Mine (at least in spectors mix (obviously because he also produced atmp)) fits better to All Things Must Pass than to let it be. I think it was kind of a preview to All Things Must Pass when it appeared on let it be.
