‘Blow Away’ is the fifth song on George Harrison’s self-titled eighth solo album, and was its lead single. See more…

‘Blow Away’ I like because it’s so catchy; in fact, I was a bit embarrassed about it at first, but it turned our good and people seem to like it. That was the first new tune I wrote. I was in the garden and it was pouring down with rain, and I suddenly became aware that I was feeling depressed, being affected by the weather. And it’s important to remember that while everything else around you changes, the soul within remains the same; you have to constantly remember that and fight for the right to be happy.

I’m honestly shocked to see there isn’t a topic for this fabulous Harrisong, which I have time and again championed as (only possibly) my favourite of all. beatlemaniacs_02_gif heart

It holds the distinction, in my mind, of being the one original Harrisong which has a catchy melody that one can sing along with right off– most of George’s songs have very intricate, unorthodox melodies that take many listens to be able to hum along with (Got My Mind Set On You and My Sweet Lord don’t count, okay? They weren’t technically George’s melodies)– and yet it still has that undefinable Harrisonic something that makes it ever so George… that sweet slide guitar helps, of course… a-hard-days-night-george-3

It’s just such a great song, well-structured with those understated verses and lovely uplifting choruses, and that nice rhythm. And for all you cowbell enthusiasts, it’s got that too, in the left channel under the choruses. And the lyrics perfectly capture the experience that inspired it:

I was in the garden and it was pouring down with rain, and I suddenly became aware that I was feeling depressed, being affected by the weather. And it’s important to remember that while everything else around you changes, the soul within remains the same; you have to constantly remember that and fight for the right to be happy. (source

This was something he dealt with a lot, and wrote much about (Beware Of Darkness , If You Believe, Rocking Chair In Hawaii… I could go on); and this particular tune really helps you ‘blow out the blues’. I always get a nice little high when I hear those opening notes and that gleaming slide. a-hard-days-night-george-9

The only detracting factor for me is that I don’t care for the video much; I think he just couldn’t be bothered.ahdn_paul_01 I’ve often fantasized if I were in charge of making a video for this, what I would do… perhaps at some later date I shall go into further detail… but it would be impossible to make my dream a reality as it involves George-his-own-self, and that’s just not happening. Alas. a-hard-days-night-paul-7

What’s wrong with the video? What more do you need in a video that a gigantic scary looking squashed duck and George sitting on a weird looking dog? Tho George’s hair doesnt look good.

And i’d say ‘Cheer Down’ and ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’ are both catchy melodies that you can sing along with easily and quickly. And what about ‘What Is Life ‘? ‘Deep Blue’ is as catchy as anything, tho not the most cheerful (hence the title).

[Someone will come on now and explain in great detail how all of these are complex melodies where the upper note flows into a middle sharp which is so very difficult and imaginative as is/was so characteristic of George.]

I would, but my heart’s not in it at the moment cos my 2nd favourite drummer just passed away. Musicology won’t ever replace soul, as precious as a flower.

a-hard-days-night-paul-11 I’m not expecting him to start topics for every single song ever. I was just surprised that some other Harrifan hadn’t started one for this song, as it seems to be fairly well-known; it’s not like, I dunno, ‘(Ladies And Gentlemen) His Name Is Legs’ or whatever ’tis called.

And what I meant by this, is no, I’m not going to go all musicological on ye all, I just found it the easiest melody to remember of all Harrisongs ever, even What Is Life (which surely gets second place for catchiest ever). And Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) is pretty catchy but it’s got all those weird ummmm I mean fabulously lovely and creative accidentals (a.k.a. sharps and flats). That’s why I said ‘in my mind’, because for me personally, it was the easiest tune to learn. I suppose there are varying degrees of catchiness.

After you’ve heard them all a couple hundred times they’re all equally catchy, more or less– though some worse than others.

Just trying to spark discussion and that, y’know… a-hard-days-night-paul-8

The only detracting factor for me is that I don’t care for the video much; I think he just couldn’t be bothered.ahdn_paul_01

@meanmistermustard the reason I don’t like it is because a) it’s rather boring and creepy just having the camera squared in on George’s nose; b) while I appreciate levity– quite a lot as some of you know all too well– I would rather he’d taken this song a bit more seriously and not dropped a giant duck in the scene– it’s not like Crackerbox Palace or This Song, those are humourous to begin with; c) this song has really great imagery which he failed to take advantage of, and which I would if I made a video for it; and d) what the heck is he doing with his legs?! a-hard-days-night-paul-10 I can do without the Elvis thing. a-hard-days-night-ringo-13

Its George in a music video, he was always going to take the piss and do something strange. He did it in most of his videos. Dropping a great big plastic duck in there and have it flapping its wings about was brilliant.

I forgot there was great big feckin’ swan in there too.

The Elvis bit would have been a nod to his passing and a tribute to him as this was George’s first single since the King died.

He’s singing about needing to be happy but he only looks happy the first time )’:

This used to be my favorite song. It’s not as good as I used to think it was, but I agree that the music video is fab – might even be better than the song.

Maybe the moral of the video is the way to get your blues to blow away you need to get either a giant duck, swan or dog.

I’m with unknown in that initially it was one of my favourite George tracks but now I find there are far better songs on the album eg ‘Soft Hearted Hana’ and ‘Dark Sweet Lady’. ‘Blow Away’ is certainly one of the catchiest tracks tho.

No. It’s going straight to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, where it will be the centerpiece of one of the wings of the museum.

I’m sure George would love that, especially if the gigantic duck were to dwarf a picture of Paul and Wings. Paul working his backside off for years to establish a group whereas George shoves a massive duck into a music promo for reasons unknown to man. ahdn_george_06
