And here it is

Please note that these ratings are based purely off personal enjoyment.

  • Any Road: Great album opener, fine song with iconic guitar leads. Reminds me of ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’ by Harry Chapin. Probably the catchiest. apple01apple01apple01apple02
  • P2 Vatican Blues (Last Saturday Night): Great driving beat, wonderful wry lyrics. Love the atypical-for-George ‘purred’ vocal. The middle eight is quite early-George sounding, White Album -era almost. apple01apple01apple01
  • Pisces Fish: Gorgeous–no, Georgeous— song. Love the acoustic guitar and ‘shoom-dooms’. I just wish it weren’t so LOW so I could sing it! apple01apple01apple01apple01
  • Looking For My Life: Good song, quite in the vein of all his earlier billions of spiritual devotional songs (I’m thinking Dear One, somehow). His vocal is brilliant. apple01apple01apple01
  • Rising Sun: Brilliant song. Excellent tune that perfectly suits the also excellent lyrics. The verses are rather heavy, the the chorus lifts it up. Very nice, if somewhat atypical, guitar solo, and kudos to Jeff Lynne for his strings-work. apple01apple01apple01apple01apple01
  • Marwa Blues: No words needed–the slide guitar speaks for itself. apple01apple01apple01apple01apple01
  • Stuck Inside A Cloud: Heartbreaking. It’s not outright wailing–in fact it’s almost placid–but it conveys oh, so much sadness. His voice during ‘crying as we part’ and ‘don’t even have the cure’… OH. apple01apple01apple01apple01apple01
  • Run So Far: Enjoyable tune, though not my favourite. Still, moments to love. apple01apple01apple02
  • Never Get Over You: I’m in love with this one. ‘Tis vaguely Abbey Roadish (I think the guitar is reminiscent of Something ) and such a sweet song. It was written for/about Olivia, and nothing anyone says to the contrary will persuade me to believe otherwise. apple01apple01apple01apple01apple02
  • Devil And The Deep Blue Sea: This one’s a great earworm and such fun to sing–I give it a new instrumental break every time. Nicely shows George’s lighter side. apple01apple01apple01apple02
  • Rocking Chair In Hawaii: Not overfond of this one–bit of a snooze really (sorry George) and also kinda creepy to my mind. apple01apple01
  • Brainwashed: Not too keen on this one either, but the lyrics are good. And I’d happily suffer through much worse for the sake of the middle section with that spoken-word bit. Plus, the ending’s nice. apple01apple01apple02

Overall I give this album apple01apple01apple01apple01apple02 Excellent job, George, Jeff, and Dhani!

In a car, on a bike, with a bus, in a train*. Travelin’  there, travelin’ here, ev’rywhere, in ev’ry gear. But oh, Lord, we pay the price with the spin of the wheel with the roll of the dice. Oh, yeah, you pay your fare and (all together now) if you don’t know where you’re goin any road will take you there!

Can someone please clarify for me whether it’s really Dhani harmonising with George on the chant at the end of the title track? It sure sounds like him. And people mentioned ‘Dhani backing George at the end’.

The title track, I don’t know…but “at the end” of the album they are chanting together.

The title track is called Brainwashed and is at the end of the album. So yes. Thanks @Expert Textpert!

I thought it sounded Dhani-ish.

Oh, I thought the chanting at the end was a separate track.

I just saw a YouTube comment under ‘Rising Sun’ that went:

I’m glad George had this put out in Vinyl Album as well as CD. He really was a very considerate man. Have you ever tried to roll a joint on one of those CD cases?

Never having tried it I can’t say… but I thought it amusing.

was listening to this album, and there was this thing in this song that sounded very much like that bit at the end of “Strawberry Fields Forever right before the first fade out

https://youtu.be/JJACRzv0vgM?l…..B8300D8FAF

dunno if it’ll start at the right point, it is exactly from 2:11 until 2:16.

Yes, I hear it plain as day @Shamrock Womlbs. Another reason to love this beautiful song. It’s amazing to me (when I listen to Brainwashed) that what I wasn’t able to hear in 2002 sounds so perfect now heart

To my ears it sounds more like Within You Without You , with that Indian-style descending scale thingy.

That, by the way, is my favourite song on the album*.

*At least, I’ll say that if you ask me… because I can’t really go ‘Well I like the opening track, also track 2, and Pisces Fish, and Rising Sun is a masterpiece, and Stuck Inside A… Hey! Aren’t you listening?!’

I think they sound pretty similar because he uses the svarmandal in both tracks. Probably in both songs it was tuned up in the same key so, practically, whatever thing you play in it will sound very similar.

Jeff Lynne was involved so it wouldn’t come as a surprise. That’s not fully meant as a dig at him, its how he approached a lot of the music he was involved in over the years.

I’m listening to this album for the first time in too long. I’m obsessed with it– specifically Any Road, Pisces Fish, The Rising Sun, Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, and of course Brainwashed itself.
