Why do you want both anyway? ‘All Things Must Pass ‘ has always been a 2 cd set. It wouldnt fit on one disc as it runs well over the 80 minutes a cd can hold.Oh really?… I must have been mis-informed. Anyway, I’ve made my decision and I’m sticking to it.
One wonders why?

All Things Must Pass is such an excellent album.
This might be the best Beatles solo album. I haven’t listened to enough to judge though.
For me, Paul’s “Ram ” LP is the best solo album out there, followed by “Band On The Run “, then maybe I would put Georges album third on my list.

Offline I don’t have Ram yet but Band On The Run the song is certainly one of the best Beatles solo tracks. I’m not sure about the album yet, it’ll take a few more listens (I just got it last week actually). There is a lot to like about it but it’s certainly not an album you’ll understand on first listen.

I like ATMP ………I didn’t buy it when it came out because my then GF’s brother had it and whenever I was round there I’d put it on.
I loved George and I was a guitar freak so Eric was it for me……It was always a battle to get the Jam album played. I was the only person interested in hearing it, So they were snatched, teasing listens. I quickly settled on ‘Remember Jeep’ as being the jam I liked to smother myself in, so it meant only a relatively short if painful listen for anyone else in the room.
The 70s passed and I didn’t buy it……the 80s and the 90’s were almost done and dusted before my 2nd wife took a business trip to New York, (leaving me to care for our 7 month old son)….. and I asked her to hunt it down along with Joni Mitchell’s American Songbook album …..Telling her to check that there’s a track on the American edition of Joni’s album called, ‘You’ve Changed’.
To this day she’s never tumbled that was me putting her to needless footwork and sending a message…….Mind you to this day she doesn’t know I knew about the office affair she’d started.
We parted amicably about 6 months later.
So ATMP ….great album. My fab’ fav’s were the opening track and Applescruffs…….It was not until I heard Paul deliver his serious no-messing, heartfelt rendition at the ‘Concert for George’ that I fell in love with the title track. Paul really does it justice…..For me singing it better than any of his own songs.
As for best solo albums…….I’d put Ram and Plastic Ono above it for sure but then ATMP is right up there.

Offline ^ Those would be my choices with the ‘Ringo’ album close enough to have a fab foursome.
I also really liked the poster in ATMP , quite an atmospheric shot. The reissues really should include one.

I found an interesting interview about the 2001 ATMP remaster, done fourteen years to the day before I joined this forum. 
You can hear he’s a bit short of breath at times and it saddens me, but otherwise he sounds pretty good for being only eight months away from… and now I’m getting all teary

I have listened to this album a week or two ago. One of the loveliest discoveries I have made in this holiday season.
This album strikes me in a very simple way. Abbey Road made me feel sad, uneasy, but I was satisfied. It was a huge satisfaction.
All Things Must Pass purified me. The more I listen to Beatles, more I’m starting to think they either sold their soul to Devil or had a divine inspiration, because this album is otherwordly. And it doesn’t even sound weird. Domestic atmosphere, it’s certainly not happy-boppy-poppy. Majestic arrangements, but yet so humble. Spector sure did his job damn well on this one.
Where do I start? The opening song? At first I thought it was too weird and I hated it. Too unusual for me at first. Then I grew to love it on my third listening or so.
“My Sweet Lord “? Now that’s a song. I’ve never heard this song before, as improbable as it may sound, but I found it so simple and emotional and catchy it just made a move inside me. I believed this man, singing about his and my sweet Lord. It was sincere, for sure. And it struck me hard.
And what about rocking “Wah-Wah “? Awesome song. Just up there with “What Is Life “, which is a little bit better than the former IMHO. Catchy riff-fest, bombastic producing.
“Isn’t It A Pity “, both versions, actually made me feel weary. But in a good way. The one where the mood matches the song, not because it’s that bad. Deeply interesting song, as you can’t decide on whether it’s a full-depression song or not.
What about “If Not For You “? Man that song is awesome. It’s so gentle. Not to mention “Behind That Locked Door ” which is somehow even more gentle, but in such a different way. Songs are actually similar in some matters, but at the same time, they’re not.
“Art of Dying”? Maaaaan. What a rockin’ song.
Fantastic “Apple Scruffs ” (gotta love that silly chorus) fits the album cover soooo much. “The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)”? What a magnificient song. I actually don’t know lyrics to this song. I’ve never bothered to look at them (not that I brag about it), but something about the way he sings “let it roll…” makes me… well, sad, yes, but it’s a higher form of that. I don’t know how to explain that.
In fact, I’ve probably spewed a lot of nonsense; nothing particular to review, but that’s just the way this album makes me feel – you just have to hear it to know what you feel. It actually made me think about life and God in general. There I was thinking: “Well, there is sure no ABSOLUTE way any other solo Beatle could match the level of emotions on ATMP !”. Oh how was I wrong when I finally listened through Plastic Ono Band, but that’s another story…
Sorry to reply to such an old and dusty post, but I very much enjoyed reading this. I agree with every word, and feel exactly the same way about this album.
As for Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp, well, I’ve made it pretty clear I’m a fan, to say the least. And the way he sings ‘Let it roll’ makes me feel the same way… not exactly sad, not exactly happy like What Is Life would make me feel, but some odd mixture of joy and sadness where the music is speaking to me, but I don’t know what it’s saying, but I get the message anyway… I think it would be easiest to sum it up as ’emotional’.

Offline I Dig Love is one of my favorites from All Things Must Pass . It used to be my very favorite from that album until it got stuck in my head for over a week and the magic of it died a little. I used to not even be able to listen to it because of that, but I’m over it now.

John and Paul were their songs, and you couldn’t cover them without invoking some sort of impression of them. George’s songs had room for others—other interpretations, other viewpoints, other voices. […snip…] Like Dylan, Harrison saw songs like common goods, favors to be traded or plates to be shared. You could always visit George’s songbook, like a village well, and bend it towards whatever personal ends you needed. He’d have you anytime.

Offline I just read the chapter in Phil Collins’ autobiography where he played on the sessions for Art of Dying. Apparently George never remembered Phil playing and never located the tape.
Phil was cut from A Hard Day’s Night and All Things Must Pass .
George was Phil’s favorite Beatle.

George was Phil’s favorite Beatle.
George remembered Phil playing, because he pranked that poor Phil some years later.
“There’s a great little anecdote from Phil Collins in the latest issue of either Uncut or Mojo (I forget which). Apparently Phil played congas on “Art of Dying” on a session for All Things Must Pass , but there were no congas in the final mix and he wasn’t credited on the album. Years later, when he heard that George was remastering ATMP , he mentioned this to a mutual friend. A few days later, a tape showed up in the mail with a note from George saying “is this you”? Phil played the tape and heard a version of “Art of Dying” with absolutely horrible congas, at the end of which he could hear George saying to Phil Spector “let’s try it again without the conga player.” Phil was mortified. A few days later, George called and asked if he got the tape. Phil started to say George didn’t have to embarrass him like that, but George laughingly interrupted and said that it wasn’t really Phil’s congas, that he had Ray Cooper play really bad congas on purpose and sent it to Phil as a joke, and that Phil’s congas were fine. Phil was finally credited on the ATMP reissue.”

Offline Yes, that story was in the book and it is true, but George still didn’t remember the day Phil played. He made the tape because Phil kept asking if he remembered. He never found the tape of the original session with Phil playing congas.
