I feel your pain there…
Had she written a new verse or something, she would have needed permission, but there were no new lines, just variations on theirs (and gender change doesn’t count as a significant change to the lyrics). There is no rule that in covering a song, you have to use all the lyrics in the original.Ron Nasty said
She changed the freakin’ title, or does that not classify as “or something”? truth be known, you’re wrong about the Weird Al situation… he’s made a career from asking the original artists’ permission out of respect, eventhough he supposedly could do what he wanted anyway (that’s up for debate, in my opinion)… apparently, although unconfirmed “officially”, Paul gave him his blessings but Yoko objected… he didn’t include it on his album but did perform it live for a string… there was another instance (can’t remember which song) where an artist didn’t consent but he supposedly had all ready recorded the song in question and released it for free to protect himself from litigation… through all of this, you haven’t really stated how you feel about this latest “about the Beatles”… I’ve made my feelings quite clear… you’re always on everyone about getting back on topic, so…:-)

As I said previously, @Billy Rhythm, changing gender is not considered a significant change. The Beatles did it themselves, without needing or gaining permission, with something like The Doneys’ Devil in His Heart. You know what they did to that girl group song to make it fit for George to sing, they changed the gender in the title and in the song.
Normal practice, and perfectly acceptable under copyright laws without permission needed.
Don’t know where I was wrong about Weird Al, apart from not mentioning Paul was reportedly OK with it. As you say yourself, parody falls into a weird area. Whatever, Yoko said no and he didn’t release it as a result.
Yes, under “fair use” rules The Beatles are referenced in the film, but myself I don’t consider the film to be “about the Beatles”, but rather the strength of their songwriting, and how those songs would always be successful.
And I think I have stated what I think of the film, that it is a part of The Beatles world, but is far less important than other unofficial films like Backbeat or Nowhere Boy. Truth is, I’m probably as dismissive of it as you, I’m just less dismissive of it being a subject of discussion on a Beatles forum than you.

Most of the movies coming out today are just rehashing old ideas. To me this is a fresh idea and an intriguing question. What would the world be like if the Beatles had not existed? Music composition, recording, production, packaging. Cultural attitudes and norms. Etc.
Toward the end of the trailer, the host of the show mentions that two people that claim ownership of the songs have come forward. Then you see 2 sets of feet and one is barefoot. Could this be Abbey Road Paul?
But I do understand this purely the writer’s and director’s fantasy perception of what it “could” be like.

Trailer for Yesterday , the upcoming film set in a world where The Beatles disappear from the timeline except for one person…
That looks damn appalling.
And you cannot change one part of history and have everything else the same – you certainly cannot have Coldplay and Ed Sheerin where The Beatles do not exist.
Is this a film where at the end he reminds everyone of the Beatles music thru singing their songs (presumably ‘Hey Jude ‘ going by the trailer) so that in the end everyone loves the songs and that re-establishes them back into the timeline? If so, it sounds a lot like its ripped off Dr Who with The Master where Martha gets the entire world to think his name (that was annoying garbage as well). Plus there is that horrendous episode where the little girl screeched and warbled to kill the demon about to destroy the universe.
Surely Paul and Ringo must remember they were in the band, if not what is their history and storyline in relation to this?
Why is the opening song in the trailer ‘Hey Jude ‘ when the film is called ‘Yesterday ‘?

It looks awful- I thought we all agreed Ed Sheeran wasn’t allowed in films or tv anymore when he showed up in Game of Thrones. His Bridget Jones cameo was tolerable because it was like 5 seconds but stay away from my stuff Sheeran. The whole ‘writing Beatles songs before the Beatles did them’ has been done before in Goodnight Sweetheart.
Also, is there no other young upcoming British actress apart from Lily James? She’s in practically every film that’s been made in Britain for the past 3 years!
In saying that, if it gets a big release I’ll probably go see it BUT it still looks terrible!
That annoyed the hell out of me, but then the programme itself did.
The one positive is that it may get younger kids to discover the originals.
Note: The quotes above are from the ‘Beatles News’ thread, I thought it better to keep the conversation in this main thread and not scattered around the forum.

I believe this is a film? Like ‘Toy Story’
I think in films they use cameras and lighting…….Everything is actually just made up. They are supposed to be entertaining. But they only ever work as entertainment if people can suspend their disbelief. If you’re so refined that you can’t do that then they don’t entertain and don’t work. None of them, ever! Be a waste of your time. Same for plays, they’re made up……And books ……Sometimes films are based on books……Like for example……. Lord of The Rings…..It’s a book and a film trilogy that’s done very well. There are a lot of fans of it here I believe. It’s about fairies and elves, wizards and stuff.
The trailer I saw featured ‘Yesterday ‘ prominently ….It being the first song played on a new guitar gifted to the ‘hero’ and kicks off the whole idea……..
Looks like great fun to me. I like Curtis’ ‘what if?’ movies.

Personally I think it’s great. A lot of my friends have expressed interest in seeing it, friends who know nearly none of the Beatles’ songs. If it produces new fans, which it almost definitely will, how can that possibly be a bad thing?

After recently rewatching the trailer, I realized that the scene the main character gets into a car accident and loses one of his teeth reminded me of when Paul fell off a mop face first and chipped his tooth.

Car accidents are just such a huge part of Beatles history… it could also be a subtle reference to PiD, except in this case it’s BaN (Beatles are Nonexistent…)

That is very true, they are littered throughout their time as a group.

I wonder if it was deliberate though?
It could be, but I believe that it isn’t. This movie is targeted much more as a Sci-Fi movie, and I think that Danny Boyle would need something to fuel the story to get into the Sci-Fi part of it. I see just as way to get the movie into the main bulk of it, freak accidents are usually very commons in these types of movies, when something gets erased from history or something of that sort. If it is, I have to applaud the director for making a crucial events in the main character’s story and the plot as a Beatles reference.

The director probably doesn’t realize that hundreds/thousands/millions of Beatlemaniacs will be carefully scrutinizing their film for Beatles references…
