Excuse my daftness. It wasn’t a separate thread we had for the movie. The posts I was recalling are in the news thread https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..2/#p307254

Honestly I feel a little awkward watching another man performing and gaining credit for Beatles songs…But I guess this isn’t the first time Paul and Ringo see fictional adaptions of their story, and they most probably have got used to them.
I wouldn’t expect the film to be much of a masterpiece,I just hope that it features Beatles elements and raise people’s interest in the band.

Me too, it’s very frustrating.
But I guess this idea isn’t new, perhaps Paul and Ringo are used to different adaptions of their story(even fiction like this)!
True enough.

I agree. Of course, they won’t really be hearing Beatles songs, they’ll just be hearing covers… but that’s better than nothing, I suppose. Also, the trailer makes the plot look like a total cliché. There’d better be some sort of at least mildly interesting twist, or I will be very dissatisfied. And I expect to see some obscure Beatley references in there
(Oops,I’ve edited the original post…)
Lol don’t worry, it happens all the time. (To me, at least.)

if you’re wanting to introduce The Beatles to a new generation, this isn’t the way… C’mon Yoko & Olivia… use your veto power or are you really that strapped for cash? My Goodness…:-)

Why would Yoko or Olivia have a veto, @Billy Rhythm? This film is not being made by Apple, nor is it sanctioned officially in any way. While permission from Apple is needed for the use of an actual Beatles recording in such a project (which is rarely given and expensive), no such permission is needed to cover songs written by them. Anybody can cover any song without permission so long as they pay the relevant royalties to the song’s publisher.
There would be far fewer covers of Beatles songs if they needed to give their permission to every one.
Yoko and Olivia have no more of a veto over this film than do Paul and Ringo because the film is not being made by, or in association with, Apple.
Not official = No veto.

So why wasn’t Weird Al allowed to cover ‘Free As A Bird ‘ then? By all accounts here they are using The Beatles name… and if it were so easy to use freely I’m sure that much more tripe like this would be surfacing… if they wanted to they could prevent this crap from going out, but I suppose that it’s much easier to kick back and collect royalties than to hire lawyers to do what’s necessary…
Let me ask you this… if this film has absolutely nothing to do with The Beatles then why do you feel the need to post about it in Beatles News? or why is it being discussed here at all?… it’s not a Beatles’ film, right?…:-)

I’m sorry? It’s literally about the Beatles? It’s not affiliated, but it’s about them. There’s a world of difference, and it doesn’t take a law student to explain that…

I don’t know how to feel about this movie…
I’m excited for anything Beatles related, and I hope it will raise interest, but I feel like there are going to be more ‘fake’ Beatles fans (people pretending to like them just because the movie is popular, and it probably will be if Ed Sheeran is in it).

Weird Al wasn’t allowed his version of Free As A Bird , @Billy Rhythm, because it wasn’t a cover but a rewrite, and that is the only circumstance in which you need to gain permission — a significant change to the lyrics or giving it a new tune (rather than a rearrangement of theirs).
As to why we discuss such unofficial projects here, and why they make the News thread, is because it’s Beatles-related. This forum would be a much emptier place were we only to discuss Beatles-sanctioned projects.
The books section, for instance, would consist of only the Hunter Davies Authorised Biography and Anthology.
The Beatles world is far bigger than what is officially approved of. Some of it, like this film, is far less important than others (like, say, Backbeat or Nowhere Boy), but that doesn’t mean we won’t discuss them.

so… you’re telling me that Apple (while George was still with us) gave Tiffany permission to “rewrite” the lyrics to ‘I Saw Her Standing There ‘?… that’s even worse than Apple turning a blind eye to the misuse of The Beatles’ name here…

Tiffany didn’t “rewrite” the lyrics to I Saw Him Standing There. She varied them and concentrated on the first verse, but I fail to see any lyrics in it that aren’t just variations on theirs, which cannot be said of Weird Al’s Free As A Bird parody Gee, I’m a Nerd.

She changed the lyrics, and according to you she would’ve needed permission to do that… or is it OK to alter just a couple of words? you’re splittin’ hairs with the word “variations”… bottom line (literally) is that if there are more dollars to be earned than spent on combating this vagrancy, then all is well and no harm done… the whole idea of this is a complete joke, but it wouldn’t be the first time that people rode onto the coattails of The Beatles’ successes… and sadly, won’t be the last…:-)

I am starting to feel that, however well evidence based anything I say is, you’ll find something to object to.
Had she written a new verse or something, she would have needed permission, but there were no new lines, just variations on theirs (and gender change doesn’t count as a significant change to the lyrics). There is no rule that in covering a song, you have to use all the lyrics in the original.
It also has to be remembered that it is the publisher who gives permission, and at the time of the Tiffany cover, I Saw Her Standing There was not a song that Paul or John’s Estate had ownership of.
Unlike Free As A Bird when Yoko turned down Weird Al’s parody.
