What’s the legal situation with the copyright of the songs these days? Did Paul ok this drivel
Paul wont get a say. Sony have the rights to all but 32 tracks and they won’t care too much who covers and releases a song. Apple hold the rights to the Beatles own recordings and they generally tell every company to get stuffed.
2016: After announcing their intention to trigger their purchase option of Jackson’s stake in the company, Sony officially agreed to buy out the Jackson estate‘s full 50 percent of Sony/ATV for $750 million, making Sony the sole owner of the Lennon-McCartney catalog as well as Sony/ATV’s 750,000 songs.
2018?: McCartney’s lawsuit this week was filed with an eye on the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, which allowed songwriters to retain the publishers’ share of their copyrighted works released before 1978 after a 56-year period (comprised of two 28-year terms); for the earliest Beatles songs, that term will be up in 2018, with the later songs eligible by 2026. That reversion back to McCartney is not assured, however; Duran Duran lost a similar suit against Sony in December.

A lot of artists have been selling off their catalogues to music companies for multi millions of dollars over the last couple of years (Dylan, Springsteen, Sting etc) and I’m genuinely interested to see if Paul ever caves and takes, say $2b, for the rights to his songs. For decades he’s been saying how he wants his Beatles work back but who knows what will happen.

Nobody gets a say, not even Sony. If making changes to the lyric or rewriting the music, the permission of the publisher is needed, but a normal cover requires nothing more than the payment of royalties.

Bulk of Paul’s almost billion pound wealth comes from him owning other people’s songs. I don’t think he’ll ever sell up – what would he do with MPL then?
