Offline The John Lewis Christmas advert is out (it’s a big deal for some reason) and this years song is Elbow’s cover of ‘Golden Slumbers ‘.

They also managed to secure Yoko Ono’s support. She explained that she didn’t “want to see John deified” nor for “John’s songs to be part of a cult of glorified martyrdom.” Instead she wanted his songs to be enjoyed by a “new generation” who would “make it part of their lives instead of a relic of the distant past.” So “Revolution ” was licensed for a media campaign that cost between $7 million and $10 million.
…The most significant response was the $15 million lawsuit filed by Apple Records in an attempt to halt the commercial. Apple claimed that the ad used The Beatles “persona and good will” without permission. Reportedly, the action was settled out of court after the campaign had run its course, with Apple, EMI, and Capitol agreeing that no Beatles version would ever be used again to sell products — truly the Nike Revolution was a one off….

Offline Seeing Beatles music in commercials makes me happy (because it’s the Beatles) but at the same time I feel like it’s not right. They didn’t write the songs to sell products. George expressed concern that the Beatles would someday be used to advertise “sausages and diapers” and he honestly had a point. It can be very frustrating.

Offline Every time that ad comes on, I can’t help watching/listening to the whole thing. Much better than ads for corn pads, tampons, erectile dysfunction remedies and all sorts of assorted creams and goo that heal the various crevices, nooks and crannies of the human body.
