I was a bit surprised myself, but Olivia would have had to approve the use of the song. Maybe there’s a reason we’re not privy to, like the money going to charity?

More info at George’s and the newno2 FB pages:
Today Dhani Harrison digitally releases his version of “For You Blue ,” a song written by his father George Harrison and appeared on The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be ‘ album. All proceeds go to the Material World Foundation, which is currently focused on helping create awareness for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and its mission to cure spinal cord injury.

^^ If Gap is not directly donating, I would think Dhani is donating his fee to the charity.
Bloomberg News article on The Gap’s latest TV ads, including Dhani’s.
Also, there’s a behind-the-scenes YouTube video.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Dhani’s Gap advert had he used one of his own songs. Knowing how much his father and the other Beatles objected to the use of Beatles songs in commercials however, and did all they could to resist it, to re-record one of his father’s Beatles songs for use in a commercial – even if for charity – stinks.
It is also the first time a Beatle child has traded so heavily on their father’s work. I think Julian may have done a couple of Beatles covers over the years, but nothing as high profile as this.
I think this is Dhani’s first big mistake. Let’s just hope it’s not a sign of things to come.

The only good thing is that a charity gains financially, everything else is very out of kilter with George. I fail completely to see what Gap are bringing to the table, even if its cash for charity is this how George’s catalogue, which he managed very strictly, is going to be handled from now on? If its just adverting their company the whole colaboration stinks. Im sure George would have just given the money if that is what it is solely about.
There must be more to it.

Dhani takes his father’s legacy very seriously, knows how this will be perceived, and I doubt he made the decision lightly. For all we know, conversations on the topic of the use of music in ads could have taken place between father and son that we won’t know about. Also, wouldn’t the two surviving Beatles would have had a say in the use of the song?
As you say, there must be more to it. He knew George better than we ever will, and he’s in a better place to judge than we are.

The surviving Beatles have no say, nor have ever had any say, in the use of Beatles cover versions in anything. As to any conversation George and Dhani may have had in private, we can only go by George’s public statements – and they were always to criticise the use of their music in commercials. Your suggestion is that privately, to Dhani, he said something diametrically opposed to that.
I do not believe that.
Unfortunately, I believe Dhani has seen an opportunity to raise his public profile as a musician by taking part in a high-profile advertising campaign, and has used his father’s legacy to draw even more attention.
As I have said before, his first mistake.

Isn’t Harrisongs controlled by Olivia (and possibly Dhani) which wasn’t part of Northern Songs as that’s just Paul and John. Tho if so why do we keep seeing covers of Here Comes The Sun , Something etc. This whole legal you own the copyright, I own the sheet music, they own the actual record, she owns the banjo stuff is too damn confusing.

The covers are dreadful. Any company that expects me to pay more attention and possibly invest in their product (be it time, cash, signing up, whatever) because its a Beatles cover is sadly mistaken, I’m far more likely to turn over in revolt.
The ad for Rock Band brings memories of the incredible intro for the game.

Indeed – the kids and I were blown away the first time we stuck that one in the 360 on a new TV we had bought just a few days prior.

I protested Target for a while because of their use of Hello, Goodbye especially after they had the Jonas Brother do a cover; furthermore, Walmart is closer, so even more of a reason.
There was one other ad I can’t remember what it was, but it was in the last year or two and they had bad cover of Help . Every time came on I felt like reaching through my tv and strangle who even was singing it. One of the other things that makes me mad about the motorcycle company commercial is the channel it airs on does other classic rock covers just like that. Last night they played on a tv show Rolling Stones’ “As Tears Goes By”. They made it so dreadful how they killed the song.
On a lighter note, I loved the Rock Band commercial when it was being advertising. Its awesome

It is confusing, and I just read an article that reminded me of your comment:
Under American law, copyright holders have a right to control the performance of a work at any “place open to the public or at a place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances are gathered.”
How that affects the Lennon/McCartney catalog, I don’t know, though Paul has talked about having to pay to perform his own Beatles songs in concert. But presumably, George and then Olivia/maybe Dhani have had a say over the performance of cover versions in the US, at least.

Covers might be seen as a kind of mark of respect or tribute but the use in commercials. Gary Barlows dreary cover of Here Comes The Sun was used to advertise M&S. A lesson in how to turn such a bright, uplifting song into blah.

Speaking about dreary covers, “I Want To Hold Your Hand ” used in Across The Universe then in Glee is a very eh. Particularly, the Glee one they took a happy song about holding hands to talking about almost mourning a loss. :/ The same character did the same thing to “Blackbird “. Used a song about encouragement during the civil rights to singing about a dead bird.

I presume pre that song whoever is singing asked a girl out and she laughed in his face, said “no chance” and then went and told her mates who spread around the school. What happened to energy, feeling or passion, a song doesn’t need to be fast to have any of those included. The above makes you want to get into the bath with the electric toaster.

You get a bunch of apples for that statement.
Actually, he is gay and singing it because his dad had a heart attack I believe (its been 3 years since I seen the episode). The character already lost his mother, so when this happen to his father he wanted to hold his father to know everything is alright just as his father held his hand when his mother died. Again, I get the point of it, but its suppose to be a happy song not a sad song.
Anyways…back on topic…
