[meanmistermustard noted on the 27/03/16: another Handmade Films thread can be found here.]

I don't think there is a mega-thread on George's film company as a whole so I decided I'd make one rather than post about each film individually.

I re-watched Shanghai Surprise this evening (that's why I'm up at 1:55am :P ). I don't really know what possessed me to do it because I remember being it extraordinary bad and my memories were confirmed. It is bloody awful!

The first hour is watchable, despite Madonna's inability to say lines properly. The cinematography is beautiful which is one of the few good things about the film, that and the soundtrack is alright (although I might be a bit biased on that >.> ). However the last half hour is just horrendous, the wringing of the plot to try and get an extra 20 minutes out of nothing is pretty stupid with the viewer thinking: "Oh there's the villain....wait no he's not...ahhhh that's the bad guy....no, yet again". Not to mention the idiotic box scene and the clichéd ending.

So what do y'all think of dear old Shanghai Surprise if you've seen it? Or on other Handmade Films like:

Life of Brian, Withnail and I (a personal favourite), Time Bandits, Mona Lisa and The Long Good Friday-to name but a few.

I haven't seen any of them except "Time Bandits", which I saw before I learned about the Harrison connection. The whole time thing made me go over all funny for a week. a-hard-days-night-paul-3

I'm strongly allergic to mind-frying concepts of infinity, time, fractals, and suchlike.

Haven't seen Mona Lisa, but those other four I either liked, loved, or really loved. I can't say enough good things good enough about "Withnail" - seek out one of the many blog entries devoted to the film if you're really curious. One of the most quotable movies of all time. Plus it's really really funny (except when it's heartbreaking)

Someone said 'What were you gonna do when it's all finished,' and I said 'I don't know but it'd be good fun being a DJ.' And since then I've become a DJ, only by word of mouth, you know. SO any minute now you'll read, 'Ringo leaves to become a DJ' but it's not true. - Ringo Starr

I can't say enough good things about The Life of Brian - one of my all-time favourite comedy movies!

"What have the Romans ever done for us?"

and as for 'Loretta' and "her" baby :)

^My favourite character is Mandy, there are some great cutaways in that film that are hilarious!

I might watch 'The Missionary' tonight seeing as I'm going reading Palin's 2nd diary after my exams. It's only 80ish minutes as well.

Anybody seen it before?

Well I ended up re-watching Mona Lisa instead of The Missionary as I found the former on YouTube, (in what is the best case of copyright evasion I have ever seen). It's an enjoyable film with a great performance by Bob Hoskins. It's about an ex-convict who drives a high class prostitute to where ever she needs to go but the girl's past ends up catching up on her with horrific consequences (yeah I'm dramatic).

It gets: 4/5 if some of the scenes at the beginning were cut out it would have been a 4.5 as it is kind of drawn out.

In the book 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life: The Inside Story Of Handmade Films', Robert Sellers writes

"O'Brien was also keen for Harrison to provide a song for the film ['Nuns On The Run']. [Johnathan] Lynn remembers, 'George came in one day with a song and played it and I loved it, and the next day I tried it up against the sequence in the film and it killed the scene, it turned it into a kind of music video. The music was just too powerful. So I had the unenviable task of  calling both a Beatle and the executive producer of the film saying, "I can't use your song." So I was a little apprehensive about this. But when I phoned him, he said, "Oh that's all right, it's not compulsory," and went back to his dinner.'"

Does anyone know the song? 'Blow Away' is on the soundtrack so could be be that.

"I told you everything I could about me, Told you everything I could" ('Before Believing' - Emmylou Harris)

"Don't make your love suffer insecurities; Trade the baggage of 'self' to set another one free" ('Paper Skin' - Kendall Payne)
