I’m sure a lot of you are wondering why the Anthology documentary has never had a Blu-ray or streaming release in the last decade, and disappointed at that fact. Well, so am I, naturally!
If such a release, especially a Blu-ray version, were to be made, what would you want it to contain? My ideas are as such:
-8K scan of the video and 7.1 Dolby Atmos mix overseen by Giles Martin and Sam Okell.
-2 main Blu-ray discs, 4 episodes each. Furthermore, viewers can choose to watch the episodes as they appear on the 1996 8-VHS or 2003 5-DVD releases, versions with outtakes and ’93 cut material restored, or watch the outtakes and ’93 cut material separately as deleted scenes. The final episode also has the videos for both “Free As A Bird ” and “Real Love ” before the closing credits, rather than subjecting the “Real Love ” video to be a special feature.
-2 separate special features discs. All the special features material from the 2003 DVD are included, but also extended. The entirety of the June 1994 Friar Park visit and jam, the entirety of the May 1995 Abbey Road visit, extended versions of the other features such as showing more footage of the Jeff Lynne sessions, more behind the scenes footage of compiling the albums, more behind the scenes and interview footage regarding the production team.
-Release of contemporary promos and marketing material (some of which is one the special features discs of the ’93 cut bootleg), retrospective looks back on the project to tell the more complete story about the making of every step of it up to the release of the book in 2000, and a “memento mori” featurette.
-Further, to help promote this version, all the uncut raw interview footage is compiled uploaded by Apple to The Beatles’ YouTube channel.

I’d buy it but Apple won’t ever release anything like it.
If they ever remember the series exists and realise a reissue would be worthwhile I fully expect the exact same contents but it coming with an exclusive lovely postcard set, a necktie pin and a leaflet featuring exclusive quotes from Paul and Ringo.

@Toxic34, I would buy that.Have you seen the 10-disc director’s cut?
I own the ’93 cut (which I refer as the workprint cut, since it’s not technically a director’s cut at all), and I would have to say, I don’t find one cut superior over the other. In fact, I think the interview vs. performance ratio in both cuts is roughly the same, and that both versions are equally valid to watch.
That said, the proposed Blu-ray version I would want to have would offer outtakes from the ’93 cut included, with the option to either watch them patched into the official release, or separately as deleted scenes on the Blu-ray disc.

Can somebody help what the 10 episode cut is?
It’s 10 discs of The Director’s Cut from 1993. The 8 discs are The Anthology episodes and the last two discs are special features. It had an unofficial DVD release in 2004.

One of note, in my alternate timeline thread, this possible Blu-ray/streaming release idea is a reality, among other things.

Have you heard the audio Anthology Revisited podcast/bootleg, @Toxic34? From around 2015, it’s a massively expanded version of the Anthology series, including everything that’s in the original, stuff from the 1993 cut, along with much else; runs to 18 episodes, taking it past The Beatles split and following them up to 2015. It gives a good idea of how it could be expanded.
Episode 1: “I had a vision when I was 12…” (July 1940-November 1960) 1:52:43
Episode 2: “We started to play at a place called The Cavern…” (December 1960-December 1962) 1:40:03
Episode 3: “One long twelve-hour session…” (January-October 1963) 1:27:55
Episode 4: “This Beatlemania thing started…” (October 1963-February 1964) 1:46:01
Episode 5: “It was just one giant three ring circus…” (February-December 1964) 1:48:56
Episode 6: “We make the next film…” (January-August 1965) 1:18:52
Episode 7: “It was the biggest crowd we ever played to…” (August-December 1965) 1:22:12
Episode 8: “We spend more time on recording now…” (January-June 1966) 1:15:16
Episode 9: “We had to give up touring…” (June 1966-January 1967) 1:37:12
Episode 10: “The idea of some fictitious band…” (January-August 1967) 1:26:15
Episode 11: “He just drew a circle…” (August 1967-February 1968) 1:32:36
Episode 12: “I had a feel for India…” ( February-July 1968) 1:32:44
Episode 13: “There’s no cover…” (July-December 1968) 1:26:39
Episode 14: “‘That period was the low of all time…” (January 1969) 1:28:42
Episode 15: “We made it in Abbey Road …” (February-September 1969) 1:48:18
Episode 16: “After Brian died, we collapsed…” (October 1969-April 1970) 1:23:32
Episode 17: “We just ended up for a while at each other’s throats…” (May 1970-December 1976) 1:23:04
Episode 18: “Just imagine the Beatles getting together again…” (January 1977-April 2015) 2:00:25
If you’re going to include Washington and Shea as bonus features, @Bongo, Melbourne and at least one of the Budokan performances should be included.

Yes, I’ve heard the podcast version of Anthology, and I love it immensely. I think it’s certainly an amazing take on it to include everything that happened after the breakup, especially including the release of “Free As A Bird ” and “Real Love .”
Also, in my alternate timeline, I was thinking the full concerts would occur more with the release of the Ron Howard documentary as a bonus. (Admit it, like me, you thought the “Five full performances” on the bonus disc was misleading as hell.)
In this case, I would have it be Washington, Melbourne, Shea, Paris and all the Budokan footage.

For a very short time it was available on iTunes to download!!
The track listing posted by Ron above is an earlier 2015 version, you can tell as the penultimate episode of the updated 2016 edition finishes on John’s murder whereas in the earlier 2015 version the final episode starts with John’s murder. Due to all the changes the runtime of the last episode is 1:39:43 not 2hrs.
A quote from the creator.
You’re right that Episode 17 actually does carry on until 1982, with the release of “Here Today “. But if you notice, Episode 18 starts off talking about Eric Clapton’s wedding, which occurred in 1979. So there’s overlap between the end of Episode 17 and the beginning of Episode 18. This was because it’s used as a stand-in for Ringo’s own wedding, which occurred in 1981, and was the last time the “Threetles” played together before the Anthology. However, as far as I could find, there isn’t any audio of any of them talking about the reunion at Ringo’s wedding, so I used the Clapton thing instead. Even if I had found audio about the Threetles reunion at Ringo’s wedding, it still would have led to an overlap, but I thought it was important to tie “All Those Years Ago” and “Here Today ” to John’s death, and then start fresh with pre-Anthology “Threetle” reunions afterward. Hence, the dating isn’t exactly right for those two episodes. I guess I could could have dated them from 1982, but it still would have been wrong.
Also, this is the very reason why the original 2015 release had John’s death covered at the beginning of Episode 18, so I didn’t have to deal with this weird date issue. But once I began to add more material to those two episodes, it made much more sense to end Episode 17 the way it ends.

I thought download links were against the rules, @meanmistermustard, whether requested or not. The mods have been deleting download links of late, not posting them. One thing to point someone in the right direction via PM (as I suspect happened around the time I made my post here), but I thought download links on the forum were more-or-less forbidden, especially when containing so much copyrighted material.

Yep, this is correct. I’m uneasy about people posting non-official download links containing Beatles content. Although the occasional link probably won’t cause us problems, if we start allowing some and not others there’s a consistency problem, and if we allow everything I could potentially face some legal issues.
I don’t mind if people post links to or embed Soundcloud, YouTube etc, because they police and moderate their own content and deal with copyright matters. It’s the more wild west-style sites that I’d rather avoid. Thanks.

Of a bit of note: I’m sure you’re all familiar of how the VHS release of the documentary has some additional Foley audio effects dropped in, such as, for example, the clip of For You Blue on the final episode, where you can hear cars, footsteps, doors opening, even though those weren’t naturally present. The DVD dropped these bits from its mix.
Which audio mix is better, not in terms of technical superiority (which the DVD wins hands down), but in terms of soundscape and ambience?
