Examiner reports on the airing of a 30 second tape of the bit of music Ringo blasts out of his transistor radio in AHDN‘ and is commonly referred to as ‘Train Music’. There has always been discussions on whether or not it’s the Beatles playing and this article goes in to that a little. The beatlesbible.com forum gets a mention and link too (we should start documenting all the news articles that refer back to this site).
A site that posts Beatles radios shows to post Breakfast with the Beatles (the show that aired Train Music) finally posted this one. The download seems to be down (maybe too many hits) and I’ve messaged the site about it. But maybe others will have more luck.
I don’t know what time it aired, but here’s the playlist, so that’ll give you some idea (probably the 3rd hour). Incidentally, that was my favorite episode of Breakfast with the Beatles so far in terms of the mix of favorite songs they played, so I was planning on downloading it anyway.
Once the link seems to be stable, I’ll x-post to the news thread.

The Paul on the Run article is the same as the one from Something New (post #154 above). Was wondering why the article seemed so familiar.

Interesting theory at Hey Dullblog that it might be Jimmy Nicol that’s drumming on the Train Song:
[First, quoting commenter @ODIrony:] “Also, it’s well documented that train scenes were done first. That would argue that the scene with the upper class twit would have everything needed for it set before production.”
There actually would have been no need for the radio music at that point, as sound effects are added in post-production. The film wrapped in late April, so they might have recorded it after that. In fact, there’s an intriguing entry in Lewisohn’s book for June 3, when they spent the afternoon at EMI rehearsing with Jimmy Nicol, though Lewisohn says it was not taped. A couple of people have remarked that the drumming in the radio clip doesn’t sound like Ringo, so… could it be that a few stray seconds of the Nicol rehearsal were recorded?

Trouble with that possibility for me is it doesn’t sound like any of the other 3 Beatles either.
Someone at WogBlog commented that it sounds like their Decca-era recordings, and I’m willing to believe the other three were farting around, deliberately copying a popular sound. The sticking point for those more technically-minded seems to have been the drumming, so perhaps Jimmy Nicol would be the missing element for making the case that it is the Beatles.

I suppose there might be some similarities with bits of the Decca tapes but they’d have to be seriously off their game to get anywhere near the train music.
Someone needs to go back round Jimmy’s door and ask.
