Gawd, I love this movie so much.
I had the album for many months before I saw the film, and let me tell you, I wore that album clean out (and I still love it). I listened to almost nothing else for half a year. I also saw pics and clips and trailers for the film. So I thought I knew quite a lot about it for not having seen it.
Then I saw it.
“I have no idea what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that” was my reaction. I couldn’t even begin to tell you what I thought of it (other than that I laughed my head off, got stuck in talking-Scouse mode, and it was a Beatles film so of course I loved it). Most of the dialogue entered my brain via one ear, passed briefly through, and promptly exited via the other ear. I was sort of bewildered, though in a good way, and I realised I’d have to watch it multiple times before I could figure it out.
Now, of course, I’ve only seen it… umm… a dozen times? and I can almost recite the opening scene from memory, as well as George’s wandering-into-the-production-office scene, which might be my favourite, except for… ummm…. the rest of the film.
My favourite quote, though, has to be either “I dunno, I just thought it sounded distinguished-like” or “I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

You seem like you might be a fan……555!
I lived round the corner from Marylebone Station where the opening scene was shot………We all used to ‘play’ there…. Seeing one of our ‘playgrounds’ in the film and seeing the Beatles ‘playing’ there too, was exciting. We’d all had the same problem with the milk carton. Vending machines were new and rare in London. It was actually of enough interest to be another reason to visit the Station. We could get a pint of milk anywhere but this was novel. We all noticed how they’d moved the photo booth from it’s usual spot in the corner, near ‘Lost Property’ to the centre of the concourse.
Everything about the film brings back my childhood.
And the songs!! They left an indelible mark on me and even at 62 my fingers still find their way through the iPod’s twists and turns to take a listen; perhaps more often than any other album in my collection. It was my first Beatles album and like you it got played thin. And after all these bloody years it still sounds so fresh and full of their energy and enthusiasm. ‘CLAAAANG’ ……….Forever young!
I always find time to watch the film around Christmas ……..On my own….. with a glass of Shiraz.. and have a wallow in my childhood, and the ‘Places I remember in my life, though some have changed.
Unlike everything else in my life a film like ‘A Hard Day’s Night ‘ can never change. Like their music it’s there….. forever young.
To explain……* 555… The number five in thai is pronounced ‘Ha’ so 555 = Ha ha ha. I’m so used to typing it, it slipped in but it’s a useful short-hand so it’s left there.

Watching this right now!
– just noticed for the first time that my copy of the DVD has the fallen-amp sound fx dubbed in. I thought this was only created for the brand new blu-ray? Not sure how I like the idea of technology messing with history needlessly…
“Can’t Buy Me Love ” – I look at that stunning, spinning black fire escape against the white sky and think how grateful I am that this wasn’t done in colour. But how cool, how unorthodox would it’ve been to use colour photography for the slomo skyjumping shots ONLY? 30 seconds of colour in a feature-length monochrome film – as crazy a concept as the intermission in “Help !”

– More b&w awesomeness: Paul’s hair and face silhouetted against the spotlight (lens flares and all) in that great circling closeup shot that finishes up “And I Love Her “.
– omg Ringo takes possibly the first cinematic selfie!
– car-thief bit is still masterfully timed
– I love how all those screaming, shrieking girls (and boys!) heard throughout finally get their turn in the spotlight during the TV show, especially during that final ecstatic “She Loves You “. They’re almost as big of stars as our boys; along with the Beatles, they’re the only ones being themselves. Everyone else is acting.
– Hey, it never dawned on me before that “Tell Me Why ” doesn’t get a full playing! That’s weird.
– final moment of blackandwhite cinematic gloriousness: The end credits sequence, surely the finest of all time or close enough.

The energy in the movie is astounding. The boys manically running around everywhere, of course, but if you pick someone in the audience they are just going nuts flailing arms about for ages, it’s exhausting to watch.

One fun thing to do is pick an individual Beatle to watch in the group scenes, George does such weird stuff including “sleeping” and in Help ! he steals jewellery!

Speaking of which, there’s an overhead shot during I Should Have Known Better , and Paul is doing some odd things that make me suspect he’s chatting to someone while miming and right at the last minute he looks up at the camera! Also George doesn’t take a lot of the performance scenes seriously either and clowns around quite a bit!

They were all great clowns………
From AHDN to John’s struggling with the chords in I Feel Fine and the words in ‘Don’t let me Down’ at the very end show that they kept that sense of humour.

“…giveusakiss…”
Also, I feel like a real nitwit for only realizing now that the kid with the tire is basically describing J/P/G when he talks about his three absent friends with Ringo. (Ginger ‘says things’, Eddie spits & hits, Ding Dong “fancies himself” but it’s all right, he’s part of the gang.) And that those three are presumably meant to be the three who ambush the bobbies later on.

I just discovered something new while I was watching this for the 150th time!
When they’re looking for Ringo, and they come back to confront the distraught Norm and the television guy (whatever his name is– Victor Spinetti’s character), Paul says, “We were out lookin’ for ‘im but we realised he musta come back here,” and he switches to an Irish-ish accent halfway through (“we realised he musta come back here”).
I never noticed that before!

Dear Paul, forgetting which fake accent he’s putting on. His brother Michael recalled the first time he saw them on TV and thought they’d all gone mad, saying “you sounded like George gone wrong, you don’t talk like that”, and Paul replied “I know that, and you know that, but they don’t, it’s part of the image”.

Actually, come to think of it, George sounds like George gone wrong, too.
But hey– fake Scouse done by real Liverpudlians is far better than fake Scouse done by regular actors. *nudge*

Doesn’t it seem like they actually enjoyed the process and the performances? I like the way we are allowed to see that they actually sweat a little.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

Doubt anyone could stop the sweating. Must have been sweltering during the concert what with all the fans, film lights etc.

I love the film and its humour. I do wonder why they slowed down some of the songs so much, though. Especially And I Love Her , which is a slow song to begin with, didn’t get any better by being slowed down that much! At the same time, the slapstick bits are sped up to the point where I find myself skipping back over and over just to catch all the funny stuff going on in them.
But yeah, great film.
