I was at the library today and noticed two Beatles biogs in the sale rack – £1 each (that’s about $1.5 USD). McCartney by Christopher Sandford and All Things Must Pass , a George Harrison biog by Marc Shapiro. They don’t get great reviews on Amazon, but I figured they were worth a punt.

I just finished  Howard Sounes: Fab: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney and I loved it!  Yes, it is unauthorized, but I thought it was written well showing both the good & bad sides to Paul (not that there is much bad, in my opinion!).  I would definately recommend it as a good read for any Paul fan :)

I just got “Many Years From Now” in the mail a few days ago.  Loving it so far.  It’s awesome because I’ve been reading it on the bus, and the one I catch home is a double-decker.  >>Insert ‘A Day In The Life ‘ reference<< ahdn_paul_01

So much of the last edition of Ian MacDonald’s book was updated due to that book, you really should!

Yeah? I don’t have the new edition of MacDonald’s book, I still have the 1st edition I bought back in 1994. Is the new one updated enough that it’d be worth getting, do you think?

I think so. I enjoyed the new foreword, and it feels as though every other footnote references the Miles book.

Interesting. I’ll check it out…I still pull out my original copy to read quite often. I disagree with a lot of what he says, but it’s a great book nonetheless. Shame he killed himself!

Very sad. I just read his wiki entry and The Guardian’s obituary. I didn’t realize he’d written so extensively on Nick Drake as well, he’s one of my favorites.

I bought RITH when it came out, then bought the latest edition a few years ago. It’s substantially improved – it has all the Anthology information, plus various other amendments (I haven’t compared them, but Macdonald would have gone through all the latest information that emerged in the mid 1990s, and added what was relevant). If you have a first edition and enjoy reading it, I recommend getting the final version too.

I had also bought the book when it came out in the early 90s, I remember hearing about it and eagerly awaiting it. I think I’d even preordered it so that I’d have it available to pick up at the bookstore on release day. Sounds like I need to get the updated edition ASAP. I disagree with some of his assessments (he really hates all of the “heavy” Beatles songs) and sometimes he’s a bit too clinical but overall it’s a great book.

For info, my first edition ends with I Me Mine on page 294. The paperback closes with Real Love /Anthology overview on p383. There’s quite a bit of new stuff altogether – roughly 30% more book, going on page numbers alone.

Damn, that is! I’ll get the new version ASAP!

I managed to procure a copy of Many Years From Now last night and started it (I got as far as the end of the foreword before I fell asleep, ). I hope to dive into it in earnest this week. One weird thing a friend told me is that it ends in 1970 with the Beatles’ breakup…that’s not really a full-fledged biography, then, is it? More like a “setting the record straight on the Beatles years” memoir.

I was a little disappointed by that. Guess Paul wasn’t ready to talk about Wings and beyond, plus I suppose Miles was less involved in his life and so much of the book hinges on his recollections as well. I still love the book though. Happy reading!

Good point…they really only shared 1960s London in common. Still, it should be fascinating to read. Too bad there won’t be any insight on Linda, Wings, John’s death…I’d love to hear Paul’s unfiltered take on those.

I wrote this in my review earlier, but his chapter on hanging out with Linda in New York is one of my favorites in the book. And I don’t know which edition you have, but the latest one has a beautiful tribute to her.

I’ll see which edition it is…I’d like to read that if it’s (hopefully) in there.

It’s the paperback, which mentions the tribute on the cover.

“Many years from now” is a great book – but not a McCartney bio, if only because it focuses on the Beatle years.

Many years from now -so to speak – when the definite McCartney bio will be written, “Many Years From Now” will perhaps be seen as Volume 1.
