Is this book a massive upgrade on the Howlett’s last book? What i mean is is it just loads of new pics, facsimiles, and transcripts of interviews we already have or does it contain new previously unknown information. Normally i wouldn’t ask but the amazon have it going for £27.90 and with everything else coming out it may be one to put on the ‘later for cheaper’ pile.

Finally got around to DrBeatle’s review and sadly i have to say i want this damn book now. Sounds far better than i thought it would, but it will have to wait.
In regards to the positive interviews John and George gave about the Beatles future in ’69, would that be because Klein was renegotiating better royalties for the Beatles albums, i forget the timeline and if Abbey Road was before or after Klein’s successful discussions.

^yes, that would be the reason in ’69, but surprisingly in 1970 (and even into ’71, which isn’t covered by this book), John and George were keeping the door open, especially shocking for George.
And you won’t be disappointed in this book.

Something i spotted recently and had me puzzled was that Howlett numbers the BBC shows as 53 when other places have it as 52. Turns out it is down to the November 1963 Royal Variety Performance but that was not an exclusive BBC performance, being broadcast on ITV on the same day as BBC radio aired a non-complete Beatles set (omitting She Loves You ). So should it be 53 or 52?

Finished reading my copy yesterday evening.
The book itself is well-written and it’s quite informative. There were quite a few things I hadn’t read anywhere else. The investigation by Kevin Howlett is exemplar. The pictures are great, a lot of them grabbed from Beatles Monthly.
Still, what bothers me a bit is that having almost the same release date as the BBC 2 albums, it was not included in the notes. Especially when Howlett is also the author of the notes on the CDs. He has said that it was all very hush-hush and all that, but still, the tracklisting and his notes must have been ready by the time his manuscript should have been finished for print as well, so I really see no plausible explanation for the exclusion (rather, non-inclusion) of Live At The BBC 2 on the book.
All in all, a must-have.
IIRC he couldn’t tell the publisher about the new album, so none of the information could have been included.

Here is something I am wondering. There is mention here to the lack of reference to On Air. I have just noticed, in my edition, while it is absent from the notes and breakdown at the back of book, it is referenced in the introduction.
On page 8, in his introduction, Howlett writes, “To follow up [Live At The BBC ‘s] critical and commercial success, a companion album On Air – Live At The BBC Volume Two was rush-released… nineteen years later.”
I am curious whether this reference appears in all copies of the book, or if it is an indication that via reprints the book is being – and may be further – updated to include the details of Volume Two?

I bought it just before Christmas, and it would appear to be a first edition – “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1” (ISBN: 978 1 849 90688 3). I am curious whether a last minute alteration was made, and if the review copy was any different, and I know some here received a review copy…
Joe’s comment about a belief that Howlett couldn’t tell the publisher about the album, hence the lack of reference, and my edition having a reference, though not detailed… Just has my little brain wondering!
