It annoyed me as well – I know John was capable of being very cruel but that quote just seemed a step too far.

I wonder if any of the stuff he’s supposed to have said to Brian will be revealed as myth.

Who gets to own the reprints of Volume 1, vee jay books or Capitol? Will it be another court case with Capitol trying to sneak sections out in other books before finding they cant.

Vee-Jay Books will leave out a few key bits – probably the chapter on the day John met Paul, and the first trip to Hamburg – but at least they’ll have released something before the main publisher.

Capital Crown will decide the deluxe edition could be better released as three or four separate volumes, will mix up the chapter order and pull out a few sections to be published as standalone mini books. They’ll demand some early drafts of Turn On and include them in the final book.

The first book will be a hit when Mark Lewisohn arrives in the US to do a publicity tour. He triumphantly appears on Letterman (meanwhile Howard Stern self-styles himself as “the Second Lewisohn”) and sales go through the roof.

Lewisohn, however, will get increasingly frustrated with his US publishers dicking around with his work but eventually, in 20-30 years, the UK editions will be released worldwide as the proper versions.

The extended deluxe edition is available for £60 from The Hive, with free delivery to a local independent bookshop in the UK (they don’t seem to post anything out). It’s a £15 saving on the Amazon listing, and the cheapest I’ve yet seen. I’ve not used the site before but I think I’ll give it a go – they give a percentage of all sales to independent book sellers.

Those of a sensitive disposition might want to look away now…

The Hive, selling Mark’s Deluxe Extended edtion for £59.26, are the only UK website who take National Book Tokens. I happen to have £40 in National Book Tokens from my birthday – which means I’ve just scored the Deluxe edition for (whisper it) £19.26, delivered. Oh Boy.

That’s really good news! What a bargain.

I liked what I saw of the Hive, particularly that they’re trying to do something different with the book industry (I hope the percentage rate which goes to independent sellers isn’t pitiful).

Someone on the Steve Hoffman board said he tried ordering the book from Germany (within the EU) but they didn’t accept non-UK credit cards. So I guess it’s not perfect.

Yeah, I like their (Hive’s) ethos. You can have things delivered free to local independent bookshops, the idea presumably being that you might browse and buy while there.

I think it’s pretty disgraceful that Amazon et al, even Waterstone’s (online) don’t accept National Book Tokens.

You haven’t, Father McCartney? That’s so unfair! What a bargain, indeed!

Do you want to help out a poor student by buying them a really nice book they’ve wanted for ages…? :D

I’m thinking of cancelling my Amazon order and getting it from that place, too. The only thing I’m a bit worried about is that I’ve never used the site, and I have Amazon loads of times and never had any problems. Plus I like things to be straightforward, so leaving it be would be better in that respect. I’m thinking I’ve got to try and save money here, though.

I am in the exact same position. Plus you can get the deluxe delivered on the same day as release, I don’t want to have to wait days if Hive don’t get it in. Maybe we should contact amazon, telling them about Hive and their cheaper price and how if they don’t give us the same we’ll take our business elsewhere.

We could even nearly quote Beatle Paul:

^^ Haha :D

Well, I decided yo get it from this Hive site. There’s a slight risk something will go wrong or it won’t be delivered on time but a) it’s cheaper and b) I’ve checked the website out and they support independant bookshops, which I think is really important. I know of so many little shops that have had to close down because of global companies like Amazon. It’s a shame.

My question seems to have gotten lost, and nothing I found on Google answered my question. So are these tokens like food stamps?

There is now an audio clip of Mark reading from the book on thebeatlesbiography website.

I’m saving it for my journey home from work. I’ll bet he does a great job – he has the kind of speaking voice that was made for audiobooks.

Not really. You can buy book tokens to give people as gifts – a bit like a £5 iTunes voucher or similar. They’ve been around for years; I always used to get them for Christmases and birthdays. There’s more info on this site.

You can buy either paper vouchers to exchange for books, or plastic gift cards to be swiped at the counter (and which can be topped up by generous relatives).

Thanks, Joe. What a great thing to have a national program for book buying. Wish we had something like that here.

Do you not have vouchers you can spend in clothes shops or places like that over the pond then? They’re like that. I love learning about little things like this. Another reason why I love this place :D

We can give/receive “gift cards”. I’m not sure if that is the same thing.?.?

These are plastic cards that are about the size of a credit card. They come in two varities. Some come with a pre-loaded amount. Others you can add how much ever you want it programmed for. They are available for restaurants, stores, and online sights.

When I think of “vouchers”, I think about rationing as in a time of war. A person/family could get onl so many vouchers/stamps for coffee, clothes, sugar, etc.

Are our “gift cards” the same thing as your “vouchers?” You are right; it is n neat to learn about these differences.

Yeah, well that’s kinda the same thing. About as close a comparison you’re gonna find I think. As Joe said, they’re like iTunes gift cards.

The word ‘voucher’ must have lost its use a bit in the States, by what you said, but you still hear it here. A voucher is something you have with a monetary value on it which you can buy things with, or you can have a discount voucher, which entitles you to a % off something, be that a meal at a restaurant, your lighting fixtures, your legs waxed, anything…
