You know, life is weird sometimes. For someone who loves both Florence and Dog Days Are Over (and considers Dog Days the best song on its respective album), I have never seen the lyrics to Dog Days Are Over as anything above average. The appeal for me has been her delivery. Anyways, here’s my favourite Florence lyrics. My Boy Builds Coffins:
He doesn’t build ships, he has no use for sails
He doesn’t make tables, dressers or chairs
He can’t carve a whistle cause he just doesn’t care
My boy builds coffins for the rich and the poor
Kings and queens have all knocked on his door
Beggars and liars, gypsies and thieves
They all come to him ’cause he’s so eager to please
My boy builds coffins he makes them all day
But it’s not just for work and it isn’t for play
He’s made one for himself
One for me too
One of these days he’ll make one for you
For you
For you
For you
My boy builds coffins for better or worse
Some say its a blessing, some say its a curse
He fits them together in sunshine or rain
Each one is unique, no two are the same
My boy builds coffins and I think it’s a shame
That when each ones been made, he can’t see it again
He crafts everyone with love and with care
Then its thrown in the ground and it just isn’t fair
My boy builds coffins he makes them all day
But it’s not just for work and it isn’t for play
He’s made one for himself
One for me too
And one of these days he’ll make one for you
For you
For you
For you
Oh,
Oh, oh, oh
Oh
As if it matters how a man falls down.'
'When the fall's all that's left, it matters a great deal.

I LOVE that song, Sun King : it’s my favorite on the album, followed closely behind by “Dog Days Are Over”. I really appreciate the diversity in the lyrics to “My Boy Builds Coffins”; I can see them as being a reference to both a man and also to God /Death. It’s a beautiful, poetic song full of deep meaning–it’s quite simply art in motion.
"I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know? I'm just one of those people."

Against the Grain by City and Colour:
You need not to climb mountaintops.
You need not to cross the sea.
You need not to find a cure
For everything that makes you weak.
You need not to reach for the stars
When life becomes so dark.
And when the wind
Does blow against the grain,
You must follow your heart.
You must follow your heart.
When all your friends have come and gone
And the sun no longer shines
And the happiness for which you long
Is washed away like an ocean’s tide;
When all the hard times
Outweigh the good
And all your words are misunderstood;
When the day seems lost from the stars,
You must follow your heart.
You must follow your heart.
If you feel you’ve paid the price
And your wounds should cease to heal
And everything you love in life
Spins like a winding wheel;
If you should wake to find you’re abandoned
And the road you’ve traveled
Leads to a dead end;
When death creeps in to play its part,
You must follow your heart.
You must follow your heart.
These lyrics strangely remind me of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young”…
"I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know? I'm just one of those people."

White lips, pale face,
Breathing in snowflakes,
Burnt lungs, sour taste,
Light’s gone, day’s end,
Struggling to pay rent,
Long nights, strange men,
And they say,
She’s in the Class A Team,
Stuck in her daydream,
Been this way since 18,
But lately, her face seems,
Slowly sinking, wasting,
Crumbling like pastries,
And they scream,
The worst things in life come free to us,
Cuz we’re just under the upper hand,
And go mad for a couple grams,
And she don’t wanna go outside tonight,
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland,
Or sells love to another man,
It’s too cold outside,
For angels to fly,
Angels to fly,
Ripped gloves, raincoat,
Tried to swim and stay afloat,
Dry house, wet clothes,
Loose change, bank notes,
Weary-eyed, dry throat,
Call girl, no phone,
And they say,
She’s in the Class A Team,
Stuck in her daydream,
Been this way since 18,
But lately, her face seems,
Slowly sinking, wasting,
Crumbling like pastries,
And they scream,
The worst things in life come free to us,
Cuz we’re just under the upper hand,
And go mad for a couple grams,
And she don’t wanna go outside tonight,
And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland,
Or sells love to another man,
It’s too cold outside,
For angels to fly,
An angel will die,
Covered in white,
Closed eye,
And hoping for a better life,
This time, we’ll fade out tonight,
Straight down the line,
And they say,
She’s in the Class A Team,
Stuck in her daydream,
Been this way since 18,
But lately, her face seems,
Slowly sinking, wasting,
Crumbling like pastries,
They scream,
The worst things in life come free to us,
And we’re all under the upper hand,
Go mad for a couple grams,
And we don’t wanna go outside tonight,
And in a pipe we fly to the Motherland,
Or sell love to another man,
It’s too cold outside,
For angels to fly,
Angels to fly,
To fly, fly,
For Angels to fly, to fly, to fly,
For Angels to die…

So many great lyrics and lyricists!
The most under-appreciated IMO – because all the focus was on his guitar playing – was Jimi Hendrix.
In fact, the noted music publisher Hal-Leonard has put out a book called “Jimi Hendrix – The Lyrics” which I highly recommend.
Well she’s walking
Through the clouds
With a circus mind that’s running wild
Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams and fairy tales
That’s all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind
When I’m sad
She comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It’s alright she says
Take anything you want from me
Anything
Fly on little wing… (and then of course the beautifully fluttering guitar solo)
Such a powerful guitarist surrounded by monstrous Marshall amps writing this short little tender song – simply fabulous.

My favorite song by Jimi…I’ve always loved its abruptness: just over two minutes of pure, magical beauty.
"I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know? I'm just one of those people."

Pure Imagination (yes, from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory…) is one of my favorites. I have the lyrics hanging above the bed in my dorm, right next to an excerpt from Alice in Wonderland.
Come with me and you’ll be
In a world of pure imagination.
Take a look and you’ll see
Into your imagination.
We’ll begin with a spin
Traveling in the world of my creation.
What we’ll see will defy
Explanation.
If you want to view paradise,
Simply look around and view it.
Anything you want to, do it.
Want to change the world?
There’s nothing to it.
There is no life I know
That compares with pure imagination.
Living there, you’ll be free
If you truly wish to be.
If you want to view paradise,
Simply look around and view it.
Anything you want to, do it.
Want to change the world?
There’s nothing to it.
There is no life I know
That compares with pure imagination.
Living there, you’ll be free
If you truly wish to be.
P.S.: This is my 150th post!!!

I love Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory! Those lyrics probably would be good, but that part of the movie scares me so I just can’t enjoy that.
I just really love the lyrics to Be Our Guest. This is my favorite part, it’s is so deep, and this part especially is very touching. Disney has got many a good songs with good lyrics, I would say.
Life is so unnerving
For a servant who’s not serving
He’s not whole without a soul to wait upon
Ah, those good old days when we were useful
Suddenly those good old days are gone
Ten years we’ve been rusting
Needing so much more than dusting
Needing exercise, a chance to use our skills
Most days we just lay around the castle
Flabby, fat and lazy
You walked in and oops-a-daisy!
All living things must abide by the laws of the shape they inhabit

Karma Police – Radiohead
Karma police, arrest this man
He talks in maths
He buzzes like a fridge
He’s like a detuned radio
Karma police, arrest this girl
Her Hitler hairdo is
Making me feel ill
And we have crashed her party
This is what you get
This is what you get
This is what you get when you mess with us
Karma Police
I’ve given all I can
It’s not enough
I’ve given all I can
But we’re still on the payroll
This is what you get
This is what you get
This is what you get when you mess with us
And for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
And for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
For for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
For for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
Sleeping Sickness – City And Colour
I awoke
Only to find my lungs empty
And through the night
So it seems I’m not breathing
And now my dreams are nothing like they were meant to be
And I’m breaking down, I think I’m breaking down
And I’m afraid
To sleep because of what haunts me
Such as living with the uncertainty
That I’ll never find the words to say
Which would completely explain
Just how I’m breaking down
[Chorus]
Someone come and, someone come and save my life
Maybe I’ll sleep when I am dead
But now it’s like the night is taking sides
With all the worries that occupy the back of my mind
Could it be this misery will suffice?
[Gordon Downie]
I’ve become
A simple souvenir of someone’s kill
And like the sea
I’m constantly changing from calm to ill
Madness fills my heart and soul as if the great divide could swallow me whole
oh, how I’m breaking down
[Chorus]
oooohhh my life
Someone come and, someone come and save my life (save my life)
Someone come and, someone come and save my life (save my life)
Someone come and, someone come and save my life
Could it be this misery will suffice?

Fix You by Coldplay
When you try your best, but you don’t succeed;
When you get what you want, but not what you need;
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep–
Stuck in reverse.
When the tears come streaming down your face
Because you lose something you can’t replace;
When you love someone, but it goes to waste–
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones,
And I will try to fix you.
And high up above or down below;
When you’re too in love to let it go–
But if you never try, you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth.
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones,
And I will try to fix you.
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace.
Tears stream down your face
And I…
Tears stream down your face–
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes–
Tears stream down your face
And I…
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones,
And I will try to fix you.

Mark Hollis – The Colour of Spring
Forget our fate
The pedlar sings
Set up to sell my soul
I’ve lived a life for wealth to bring
And yet I’ll gaze
At the colour of spring
Immerse in that one moment
Left in love with everything
Soar the bridges
That I burnt before
One song among us all.
Talk Talk – Ascension Day
Bet I’ll be damned
Built the debt
I turned 2’s up today
Bet I’ll be damned
Gets harder to sense to sail
Farewell fare well
Mother numb to & devout to
Reckon luck sees us the same
Weighted my hand
Kill the bet
I’ll burn on judgement day
Weighted my hand
Get hard hit to sin to sail
Farewell fare well
Mother numb to & devout to
Double deal
A season wrapt
Too lax to lapse so soon
Reckon luck sees us the same.

Universal Soldier by Buffy Sainte-Marie (although I especially dig Donovan’s cover–love him)
He’s five-foot-two and he’s six-feet-four.
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He’s all of thirty-one, and he’s only seventeen.
He’s been a soldier for a thousand years.
He’s a Catholic, a Hindu, and Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn’t kill.
And he knows he always will.
Killing for me, my friend, and me for you.
And he’s fighting for Canada.
He’s fighting for France.
He’s fighting for the USA.
And he’s fighting for the Russians.
And he’s fighting for Japan.
And he thinks we’ll put an end to war this way.
And he’s fighting for democracy.
He’s fighting for the Reds.
He says it’s for the peace of all.
He’s the one who must decide
Who’s to live and who’s to die,
And he never sees the writing on the wall.
But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned them at Dachau?
Without him, Caesar would have stood alone.
He’s the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war.
And without him, all this killing can’t go on.
He’s the universal soldier
And he really is to blame.
His orders come from far away no more.
They come from here and there and you and me;
And, brothers, can’t you see?
This is not the way we put the end to war.

George’s “What Is Life “:
What I feel, I can’t say
But my love is there for you anytime of day
But if it’s not love that you need
Then I’ll try my best to make everything succeed
Tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side
What I know, I can do
If I give my love now to everyone like you
But if it’s not love that you need
Then I’ll try my best to make evrything succeed
Tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side
Tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side
What I feel, I can’t say
But my love is there for you any time of day
But if it’s not love that you need
Then I’ll try my best to make everything succeed
Tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side
Oh tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side
What is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side
Oh tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me who am I without you by my side
And John’s “How?”:
How can I go forward when I don’t know which way I’m facing?
How can I go forward when I don’t know which way to turn?
How can I go forward into something I’m not sure of?
Oh no, oh no
How can I have feeling when I don’t know if it’s a feeling?
How can I feel something if I just don’t know how to feel?
How can I have feelings when my feelings have always been denied?
Oh no, oh no
You know life can be long
And you got to be so strong
And the world is so tough
Sometimes I feel I’ve had enough
How can I give love when I don’t know what it is I’m giving?
How can I give love when I just don’t know how to give?
How can I give love when love is something I ain’t never had?
Oh no, oh no
You know life can be long
You’ve got to be so strong
And the world she is tough
Sometimes I feel I’ve had enough
How can we go forward when we don’t know which way we’re facing?
How can we go forward when we don’t know which way to turn?
How can we go forward into something we’re not sure of?
Oh no, oh no

I love that song: What Is Life .
I also love the lyrics to Oasis’ ”She´s Electric”. Not a massive Oasis fan but I do like this song.
She’s electric
She’s in a family full of eccentrics
She done things I never expected
And I need more time
She’s got a sister
And god only knows how I’ve missed her
On the palm of her hand is a blister
And I need more time
And I want you to know
I’ve got my mind made up now
But I need more time
And I want you to say
Do you know what I’m saying?
But I need more ….
Coz I’ll be you and you’ll be me
There’s lots and lots for us to see
There’s lots and lots for us to do
She is electric, can I be electric too?
She’s got a brother
We don’t get on with one another
But I quite fancy her mother
And I think that she likes me
She’s got a cousin
In fact she’s got ’bout a dozen
She’s got one in the oven
But it’s nothing to do with me
Not genius lyrics but quite funny, a little bit Mean Mr Mustard , Polythene Pam type of funny.
Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

Hey Rosetta’s Yer Fall (only the last two parts):
and i’m not coming out, i’m not coming out, i’m not coming out, i’m not coming out.
my love, my love is dead i buried it
in the falling leaves, looking awful green, in the whipping wind
my love, my love is dead i buried it
and it’s better hid, all the s**t we sling into the whipping wind
my love, my love is dead i buried it
just an honest kid, i always did everything they said
my love, my love is dead i buried it
what a senseless thing! this heart in shreds in the whipping wind!
