"Well, I got a girl six feet tall
Sleeps in the kitchen with her feet in the hall"
and
"Well, two old ladies sitting in the sand
Each one wishing that the other was a man"
'Cumberland Gap' - Lonnie Donegan
You can see why skiffle was so popular in the 50's.
'Red Hot', as sung by George in Hamburg has veyr similar lyrics to the "six feet tall" lyrics above which always throws me.
"Well I gotta gal, six feet four, sleeps in the kitchen
With her face at the door"

From the Dead Kennedy's 'The Stars and Stripes of Corruption'
But what can just one of us do
Against all that money and power trying to crush us into roaches?
We won't destroy society in a day
Until we change ourselves first from the inside outWe can start by not lying so much
And treating other people like dirt
It's so easy not to base our lives on how much we can scam
And you know it feels good to lift that monkey off our backI'm thankful I live in a place where I can say the things I do
Without being taken out and shot
So I'm on guard against the goons trying to take my rights away
We've got to rise above the need for cops and lawsLet kids learn communication instead of schools pushing competition
How about more art and theater instead of sports?
People will always do drugs, let's legalize them, crime drops when the mob can't price them
Budget's in the red, let's tax religionNo one will do it for us, we'll just have to fix ourselves
Honesty ain't all that hard
Just put Rambo back inside your pants
Causing trouble for the system is much more funThank you for the toilet paper, but your flag is meaningless to me
Look around, we're all people, who needs countries anyway?
Our land, I love it too, I think I love it more than you
I care enough to fight the stars and stripes of corruptionLet's bring it all down
Let's bring it all down, let's bring it all down
If we don't try, if we just lie
If we can't find a way to do better than this, who will?
¡No pasarán!

“She said ‘I know a town where life’s a game and baseball’s all that’s real.
At night the faces light up, and the heroes take the field.
First time
Oh I know its not your first time
First time
Yes I know i’ve seen your face before
Last time
Maybe in a past life,
or maybe it was last night
I don’t know”

Just a snippet from the Yo La Tengo song ('Our Way To Fall') I posted in another thread, because this one verse really stuck out to me for some reason:
I remember your old guitar
I remember "I Can't Explain"
I remember the way it looked around your neck
And I remember the day it broke
I don't know, the extra detail of the Who song and the guitar breaking adds so much to it all...

The lyrics to Echoes by Gene Clark have become recent favourites of mine. Such wild and creative imagery!

Belle & Sebastian - I'm A Cuckoo
Jesus told me, go after every coin like it was the last in
The world
And protect the wayward child
But I'm a little lost sheep
I need my Bo Peep
I know I need My Shepherd here tonightI was there for you
When you were lonely
I was there when you were bad
I was there when you were sad
Now it's my time of need
I'm thinking, do I have to plead to get you by my side?I'd rather be in Tokyo
I'd rather listen to Thin Lizzy-oh
Watch the Sunday gang in Harajuku
There's something wrong with me, I'm a cuckoo
¡No pasarán!

"When the four corners of this cocoon collide, you'll slip through the cracks hoping to survive. Gather your weight, take a deep look inside, are you really who they idolize? To pimp a butterfly."
- Kendrick Lamar, "Wesley's Theory", delivered by Josef Leimberg.
A personal favorite line of mine, both in rap and music in general.

This utterly heartbreaking song by Steven Wilson (whose birthday is today) (under spoiler) called 'Routine', which is anything but
It's written from the point of view of a woman whose husband and sons have recently been killed. I highly recommend viewing the music video.
What do I do with all the children's clothes
Such tiny things that still smell of them
And the footprints in the hallway
Onto my knees scrub them away
And how to be of use make the tea and the soup
All of their favorites throw them away
And all their schoolbooks and the running shoes
Washing and cleaning the dirty steel sink
Routine keeps me in line
Helps me pass the time
Concentrate my mind
Helps me to sleep
And keep making beds and keep the cat fed
Open the Windows let the air in
And keep the house clean and keep the routine
Paintings they make still stuck to the fridge
Keep cleaning keep ironing
Cooking their meals on the stainless steel hob
Keep washing keep scrubbing
Long until the dark comes to bruise the sky
Deep in the debt to night
Routine keeps me in line
Helps me pass the time
Helps me to sleep
Routine keeps me in line
Helps me pass the time
Helps me to sleep
The most beautiful morning forever
Like the ones from far off, far off away
With the hum of the bees in the jasmine sway
Don't ever let go
Try to let go
Don't ever let go
Try to let go
Don't ever......
Also, these lines from another song of his called 'Happy Returns': 'The truth is, the years just pass like trains/ I wave but they don't slow down'
it verges from the sublime to the ridiculote

The entirety of Leonard Cohen's "Susanne" is simply poetic from start to finish.
