Basic rules: 14 songs, all artists. Only music you could ever listen to for the rest of your life.

Mine:
1) I Saw Her Standing There
2) No Champagne Socialists - Arkells
3) Mushaboom - Feist
4) That's Amore - Dean Martin
5) American Pie - Don McLean
6) While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7) My Body Is A Cage - Arcade Fire
8) Jungleland - Brice Springsteen and The E-Street Band
9) In My Life
10) I Don't Know - Sheepdogs
11) 1 2 3 4 - Feist
12) A Rush of Blood To The Head - Coldplay
13) Where Have All The Good People Gone? - Sam Roberts
14) One For My Baby (And One More For the Road) - Frank Sinatra

And, the explantation (it makes everything so much clearer): #4,5,8 are family reminders that I couldn't forget. # 2,3,7,10,11, and 13 are all Canadian classics of the last 8 years, and well, the Beatles' songs were one of my personal favs of each of the songwriters. And, I couldn't think of a more fitting song then what I hear ever night at the end of my favourite music broadcast. Ol' Blue Eyes - take me away!

(Alphabetical)

Axis Bold as Love (Hendrix) [the guitar at the end makes it all worthwhile]

All Along the Watchtower (Hendrix version of Dylan song) [amazing rendition of what is otherwise, IMO, a so-so song]

Eleanor Rigby

Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)

I Want To Hold Your Hand [on a desert island, this will keep me in a good mood for days]

Light My Fire (Doors) [love that riff and the build-up at the end]

Lucy In the Sky [need to dream]

Message In a Bottle (Police) [a candidate for best lyrics ever + most appropriate for a desert island]

Monkberry Moon Delight (McCartney) [that riff, that scat singing at the end...]

Oliver's Army (Elvis Costello)

Penny Lane [love each and every one of those images, not to mention the soaring melody]

Saturday Night (Elton John) [gotta dance]

Summer of '69 (Brian Adams) [memory lane - I was just a kid, but summer of '69 - July: Moon Landing, August: Woodstock,    September: Abbey Road ...]

Suzanne (Leonard Cohen) [on a desert island got to be deep in thought sometimes]

Honorable mention: Since I've Been Loving You (Led Zeppelin) [some of Page's best guitar],   Bridge Over Troubled Waters (Simon and Garfunkel),   When the Music's Over (Doors) [fabulous ending],    We Used To Know (Jethro Tull),   Hesitation Blues (Hot Tuna) [great acoustic guitar and bass],   California Dreamin' (Mamas and Papas),     Wicked Game (Chris Isaak), .....

Just for fun I am not doing any repeat artists.

It Makes No Difference - The Band

Such A Night - Dr. John

Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues - Bob Dylan

Carolina In My Mind - James Taylor

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills, Nash

Till the Morning Comes - Neil Young

Heroes and Villians - The Beach Boys

Echoes - Pink Floyd

Why Don't You Write Me - Simon and Garfunkel

Terrapin Station Medley - Grateful Dead

Levon - Elton John

Bluebird - Buffalo Springfield

and last but not least...

Sexy Sadie !

I think maybe I won't take any Beatles or Solo Beatles because it will be too hard listening to some of their music and not all of it.

Thought I'd have another go with what I personally think are more sensible song choices than last time.

1. The Monkees - The Porpoise Song

2. The Beatles - Across The Universe (Past Masters version)

3. Small Faces - The Universal

4. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

5. Roy Orbison - Blue Bayou

6. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows*

7. The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore

8. John Lennon - Woman

9. David Bowie - Heroes

10. The Beach Boys - Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)*

11. The Beatles - Here, There And Everywhere

12. Duane Eddy - Love Me Tender (cover)

13. Wings - Little Lamb Dragonfly

*I really wanted to go for two Beach Boys tracks that aren't from Pet Sounds, but they're too irresistible to not include!

Oh my god, so difficult. Since there's no time limit on the songs themselves... ahdn_george_06 I'll choose all the hopelessly long songs. I'll also refrain from choosing songs that I can reasonably approximate myself -- just the ones that HAVE to be listened to in their original recorded glory. So here it is, the list of pieces of recorded music that I think I cannot live without:

1. 'Echoes' - Pink Floyd
2. 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' - Pink Floyd
3. 'The Blue' - David Gilmour
4. 'Exogenesis: Symphony' - Muse
5. 'Marwa Blues' - George Harrison
6. 'Heroes' - David Bowie
7. 'No Quarter' - Led Zeppelin
8. 'It's All Too Much ' - The Beatles
9. 'Here, There And Everywhere ' - The Beatles
10. 'Since I've Been Loving You' - Led Zeppelin
11. 'A Pillow Of Winds' - Pink Floyd
12. 'Ashes to Ashes' - David Bowie
13. 'Glorious' - Muse
14. 'Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)' - George Harrison

Songs that didn't make the Final Cut a-hard-days-night-ringo-12

'Hey Bulldog ' - The Beatles
'That's The Way' - Led Zeppelin
'The Rain Song' - Led Zeppelin (I can play it pretty well)
'Unintended' - Muse
'Hyper Chondriac Music' - Muse
'Knights Of Cydonia' - Muse
'Little Wing' - Jimi Hendrix
'Across The Universe ' - The Beatles
A whole lot of Beatles, because I've memorised 'em mccartney-shrug_01_gif
Pink Floyd, ditto (e.g., the entire DSotM album)
A long, long list of music that I enjoy greatly but could conceivably live without -- the albums I selected the songs from, affiliated soloey things, etc. *cries*

One song only per artist.

I’ve deliberately avoided Beatles/solo Beatles to make it interesting, and to give a few other artists some attention.

If I Can Dream - Elvis Presley

You Got It - Roy Orbison

Tiny Dancer - Elton John

Where the Streets Have No Name - U2

Piano Man - Billy Joel

Kiss From A Rose - Seal

Let’s Stay Together - Al Green

Heroes - David Bowie

Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on my Head - BJ Thomas

How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees

September - Earth, Wind and Fire

Purple Rain - Prince

Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

I’m Not in Love - 10cc

The following people thank Timothy for this post:

1.The Beatles 2.Sgt. Pepper 3.Abbey Road 4.Magical Mystery Tour 5.Rubber Soul 6.Revolver 7.Help! 8.Let It Be
9.A Hard Day’s Night 10.Please Please Me 11.Beatles For Sale 12.With The Beatles 13.Yellow Submarine

Thanks! I was considering putting Trane's Naima or Ascension, but I was listening to A Love Supreme at the time and was kind of overcome by the beauty of Psalm.

Apart from, 'Jumping Jack flash'......Which for some reason I have to have, (and I'm not a Stones fan)....It's hard for me to honestly 'castaway' so many songs.

I was pleased to see, 'Little Lamb Dragonfly' and "Since I've been Loving you' getting mentions above.

Oooh.....I might have to have 'Night and Day' Hot Club de Paris'.......Stephan and Django

Walks towards you...........
