I wrote two songs during this past spring I’m really happy about.

This summer, I’ve been preoccupied with doing versions of other people’s songs — first “Farolito” by the Mexican songwriter Augustin Lara (1900-1970), then the old Cuban standard “Guantanamera”, then that popular song from the 1940s “Mairzy Doats”, then that old blues song “Lazybones” from the 1930s (popularized by Leon Redbone), and finally these days Donovan’s “First There is a Mountain”.  Whenever I’m in the process of learning the song and putting my own little touches to it, the song is running in my head throughout the day, like a loop.

I struggle writing songs…well the lyrics anyway. The music just comes to me.

Lyrics are harder I think, if you have high standards for “meaning” and “significance” and to the degree that your locutions are conventional and not avante-garde.

One of the songs I wrote this last spring was singularly challenging in that it had an extraordinarily high number of syllables per line — so many that I still run out of breath when I try to sing it!

One part has this syllable pattern (and it’s repeated another time in the song) sung fairly fast tempo with very little time to breathe in between syllables:

4

2

2

5

5

4

4

4

6

6

7

5

7

6

7.

Faded flowers, wait in a jar, till the evening is complete... complete... complete... complete...

When I try to write songs, I can write okay music on the piano, meaning not anywhere close to good. And when I try to write lyrics, I think they’re great when I’m writing them, and when I wake up the next day and say them to myself, I think, “These are the dumbest lyrics I’ve ever written.”

This is how I am with basically everything I ever do. If you don’t let yourself fail, though, you’ll never get better. I used to be that way with writing papers; if it wasnt’t perfect I would just give up and restart. What you have to do instead is think about how you could do better, and don’t have too high of expectations at first.

Sounds like a great idea! I play guitar and bass (mostly bass now), so I could toss some lines in and get some bass going.

I can play the guitar, but I can’t write to save my life! I’ve got chord progressions together, lyrics, a few licks and solos, but I just can’t seem to fit them together and when I do, they sound absolute carp! So if there’s a secret Beatle method of writing songs available somewhere on teh interwebs, I’m willing to have a go!

"White Album - My joint-fave Beatles album along with Revolver. They show the two sides of Beatles. Revolver's very controlled - even though it's also very innovative. The White Album's playful and almost ramshackle. It's like a scrapbook kept by a genius. Fantastic stuff."

Last year, in a period of around two-to three months (Late August to Late October) I wrote around 12 songs (but only half of them have a music pattern in mind), and I am kind of proud with some of them (my first one in particular).
Even so, I am kind of shy of singing them (even if I am studying music and I am in a chorus).
Also, ironically, much of my inspiration were Queen & Beach Boys songs, maybe The Beatles will give me an inspiration for future songs! a-hard-days-night-john-6

P.S. This is post #150! ahdn_ringo_09

I’d love to! I’ve learnt a lot about songwriting from listening to the Beatles, like common rhymes, common verse structures and common chord progressions. I write songs fairly often, although a lot of the time I get creative block. I’d love to help.

I want to create a project that has everybody’s input if they want. I want to see if Fab Forum users can create extra lyrics for “I Am The Walrus . Everybody can contribute as long as:

a. The words are just nonsense

b. It follows the rhyme and word structure of the original song

I call it “The Previously Unknown ‘I Am The Walrus ‘ Lyrics Project”.

I want to have a devoted thread to the project but I don’t know where I’d put it. Does anybody know where I should put the thread? or more importantly, does anybody have a contribution?

Note by Ahhh Girl 18 June 2014: This post was moved here from the Impossible to Derail thread.

By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

The difficulty would be that whilst John’s lyrics for IATW, and all of his other nonsensical writings, looks like gobbledegook nonsense of the highest order its very difficult to actually write as there is a very sharp mind behind it all. Anyone can come out with garbage gibberish of the highest order, making it of interest, funny and actually quite clever is where it gets tough. Anyone can throw out random words and phrases, very few people could have gotten close to writing ‘I Am The Walrus ‘, ‘Good Dog Nigel’ or ‘We Must Not Forget The General Erection’.

I am interested however to see if folk here can get close to what John wrote – and i think John would be interested too.

No idea where to put it. Games, songs or Pimp Your Own Stuff but it doesnt neatly fit into any of those. Maybe Joe could create a sub-forum in PYOS (can you create a sub-sub-forum?) for Beatle Bible projects but the question is will any of these projects last thru to completion before folk wander off due to outside commitments, lack of interest, and/or lack of commitment and input from others.
