I know some people are going to wonder why I made this thread and I just want to know what people think of bands that are usually classified under the genre of emo. I know that this genre inst for everyone but i’m just curious as to what everyone thinks. I will post a song or two from a popular emo band and post what you think of them.

My Chemical Romance:

(Their cover of the Bob Dylan song “Desolation Row”)

(also fun fact: They got Brian May to play for them during their set at reading and leeds festival in 2011. They have also been called one of the best bands of the 21st century)

Panic! at the disco:

I know not many people are going to be happy with me for putting this band on here because their album Pretty.Odd sounds a lot like sergeant pepper but they are both great albums so I probably wont put a song from pretty.odd on here. They switch up their sound every album though.

( *warning the video is slightly disturbing*)

Fall Out Boy:

Twenty One Pilots:

Only heard very small excerpts of a few of the above and its not to my taste.

To be honest, I associate it with immaturity, as I have never known anyone over the age of eighteen who still listens to it.

That’s fair enough. I’ll admit that while I am a fan of these bands a lot of the fanbase is immature (the ones that are like 10 to 14 are and some above that age are).

No opinion of it at all. I’m not the demographic, and wasn’t when it was really popular. As Necko said, and I agree, it seems more a teenager thing than an “adult” thing? I dunno.

Unintentionally hilarious, although I’m not sure that My Chemical Romance isn’t out-and-out satirising the genre.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

My sister just asked me about my thoughts on emo music yesterday, and the first words that I said were, “What’s emo music, and what does emo mean?”

Let’s say I was rather confused when she told me it was short for emotional. (Isn’t all music emotional?)

I’d rather leave it than take it.

Aren’t emo kids a watered down version of goths or something? That’s about as far as my knowledge of the genre goes. Having listened to some fragments of those videos, I can’t say it’d be my thing. I don’t mind loud music at all, but this seems a bit generic.

Yes, emo is crappy and generic. Post-punk bands like The Cure, The Smiths, and Joy Division get the job done better.

Never been into the above bands myself, though I liked Panic! at the disco a bit, but when I was between 14-16 I was heavily into stuff like Three Days Grace. I looked like a bit of a scene/emo kid, big poofy hair with loads of clips, my eyes overly black with eyeliner (Amy Winehouse got nothing on me), Zombie Hello Kitty shirts, skate shoes and all.

I was also very much into metal at the time. Still enjoy it every Now And Then .

I was once into New Kids On The Block. Well I liked their first two singles.

This has nothing to do with this so – we all grow up and our musical tastes evolve.

Would hope so. Tho looking at their discography I actually liked their 1st and 3rd UK singles, never heard of ‘I’ll Be Loving You (Forever)’ or any of their other songs.

I don’t think it should really be classed as “emo” music and having these bands all clumped into one. My chemical romance is a very good alternative rock band and fall out boy’s genre has changed from pop punk to pop rock, panic! At the disco don’t really fit one category IMO and twenty one pilots are more a mix of alternative and rap.
