Often wrongly claimed to have been Dylan’s first session (he’d played harmonica on a Carolyn Hester session and recorded his debut album the previous year), this Harry Belafonte session from February 1962 did give him his dislike of the recording process, as Belafonte took 20 takes to get what he wanted (with take 20 being the released version, and take 19 released years later).
Still, however much Dylan hated the session, it does show how fast his star was rising in that Belafonte had already heard of him, and wanted him playing harmonica — which is, more-or-less, the lead instrument — on this track.

Wow, I wouldn’t have guessed that was Bob by ear alone; I think of his much more strident chordal sound, which is obviously the result of him usually having his hands occupied with guitar/piano…RIP Mr. Belafonte
Now playing

Very goofy album of the simplest heavy-metal riffs fortified by electronic saxophone, droll sci-fi vocals, and much noise-guitar soloing (and saxman gets a couple of solos too!) I love it.

You know you are experiencing art when your reaction and interpretation of it changes throughout your life. Here is Neil’s take – they knew each other well. The last verse lays bare what it feels like to lose love.
