Been playing cards/scrabble, drinking beer, and listening to classic-fock radio with my sister for the last few hours, like many days; Beatles selections that came up were “Ticket To Ride ” and “Hello Goodbye “

For Your Love was the only encore song my band in HS ever played. We would invariably end up watching our budding Rock God lead guitarist fuzzing out.

I think For Your Love, Heart Full Of Soul and Shapes Of Things are all top-notch songs. Those first two were written by Graham Gouldman, who later had great success with 10cc, and still later performed in Ringo’s All-Starr Band. Everything goes round and round in circles.
What instrument did you play (or maybe vocals?) in your HS band?

TwoSetViolin made a video on classical pieces that you can play at your wedding that’s not the overplayed Canon in D by Pachelbel, and I made a playlist of it and it’s quite pleasant for a spring afternoon.

It’s hard to remember how I joined the band. I was mostly friends with the drummer and helped carry his kit to a rehearsal once. It was the lead guitarist’s group (who went to private school so he could grow his hair longer) and I recall a conversation with his mom. So she might have suggested letting me join. I was learning guitar, but I had a terrible time with my strumming (still do). So I mostly played percussion instruments (my mom bought me a mean tambourine) and harmonizing along with the rhythm guitarist. We played quite a few parties and a school dances, but I ended up moving across town and that was it for my music career with the mighty Alpha Omegas!

It sounds like it was a lot of fun while it lasted.
So you still play guitar? I think I mentioned before that I’m a guitarist, although I haven’t played for a while.

Cover of “Silly Love Songs” by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. (married since 1969!) – pretty nice, but I regret that that amazing bass line is much further in the mix than on the original…imagine a 1976 record being more bass-heavy than an one from 2021! Bassist on this version sticks largely to Paul’s notes as far as I could tell, though I didn’t monitor it throughout…Billy handles most of the lead, relegating the wife to harmonize occasionally.
(The couple had previously covered our boys as part of The Fifth Dimension: “Ticket To Ride ” on their ’67 debut (in which the ladies of the band sung a few lines solo, in character as the narrative’s “she”) and “I’ve Got A Feeling ” in ’75.)

@Beatlebug, the Stevie Nicks-Billy Joel tour kicked off the other night in Los Angeles. I’m not quite ready for Billy filling in for Tom on Stop Draggin’, but loved the Landslide tribute to Christine.

I don’t think I’ll ever be ready for anyone filling in for Tom but I understand she has to move on and find other ways to perform the song, it’s not like she never played it without Tom before.
I love “Outside The Rain “, though, probably my favorite off of Bella Donna, so it’s nice to see it getting some love, although I wouldn’t choose it as an opener personally. The Edge of Seventeen is a great closer, this version is probably my favorite (even moreso than the album version):
Anyway, I’m currently listening to The Joshua Tree for like the third (fourth?) time in about 2 days, because I’ve been on a U2 kick a little bit of a musical guilty pleasure, not gonna lie but they are really the perfect band for chilly, invigorating, blustery spring days.

That’s definitely one of my favorite albums. Have you heard about the new album coming out on Saint Patrick’s Day? Here is the blurb from U2’s website.
U2’s newest release is Songs of Surrender. It will be released on March 17, 2023. The album will include newly recreated versions of older U2 songs. The album comes in multiple formats, with 40-tracks, 20-tracks, or 16-track versions available in most regions. The album features old U2 songs, re-recorded and re-imagined by the full band during the COVID-19 lockdowns. It opens with “One” and closes with “40”. In an attempt to appeal to a wider audience a wide variety of colors and formats of the album were made available. The album is produced by The Edge, and co-produced by Bob Ezrin.
If you haven’t heard, they have released four preview tracks.

My word, they are depressing and bad.
What is the fascination of bands and artists to re-record classic hits; leave what you did alone and do something else. Paul did it in 1984 and they were pointless, certainly don’t want to hear him reworking ‘Band On The Run ‘ or ‘All My Loving ‘ in 2023.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ~ I thought maybe it was just me. The problem may be with this song selection. Each of these originals has a climatic moment of transcendence that the reworks don’t deliver. Perhaps the less well known songs will be more interesting.

@Richard, I got distracted at the end of this post. Are you a musician? I think I remember you discussing strings once.
