I love to hear people rant about how much they hate social media in an internet forum.  The irony is wonderful.

There’s a huge difference between an internet forum like this and the things I’m complaining about.

There is a difference between being on a forum and being on twitter, facebook or whatever – thankfully. Otherwise i wouldnt be here.

Tumblr is the evolution of old-fashioned forums like this.

The forums gave way to Friendster, Myspace, Facebook, Google+, Twitter and now Tumblr.  Every new burst of young internet users use a different type of social media to express themselves.  So while we’re complaining about social media on an old-style of social media, in a few years the 20-year-olds who use Tumblr and whatnot will be complaining about whatever new social media phenomenon the next digital natives will be using.

Therein lies the irony.  There’s actually very little difference.  The difference is us.

I’m on tumblr! I like it really a lot, it’s much better than facebook or twitter! I tried twitter too but it’s boring. On tumblr you can get lots of photos or information about your favourite topics! My tumblr is ninabuch99.tumblr.com by the way! :)

Welcome, new person!  And you made my point nicely.  And your Tumblr is quite charming.

Tumblr lets users express who they are in their own ways by their own terms.  Maybe you want to post your teenage poetry.  Maybe it’s pics of things you like.  Maybe it’s just random nonsense.  Maybe the whole thing is a collection of pictures of horrible hipsters being themselves.

I think the appeal is that something like Facebook demands a lot of your personal information and is constantly expecting you to accept it’s various changes that you can’t opt-out of.  Tumblr is whatever you want it to be is whatever way you want to present it.  Anyone can follow your page, and anyone can share things that you’ve added (and vice-versa).

Some of my favourite time-waster sites are just well-made Tumblr blogs. http://www.iheartchaos.com started that way, and is now it’s own site, but retains the same aesthetic.  The only major difference is that each post has a comment section that attracts like-minded people to discuss, argue over or riff on each topic.

Grateful that no matter what, these remain in style.

Absolutely.  I think they’ll be a constant.  At least until the internet becomes self-aware and enslaves us all.

I’ve got tumblr too! I like it, but it’s so time-sucking and I haven’t used it in weeks. I use it to post stuff I find funny or pictures I like. I’ve got Facebook and Twitter too, they are addictive, but sometimes useful. It may be sad, but if I’d had no Twitter, I wouldn’t have known about a lot of things. I like those social networks, but some people are just too addicted. I’ve got a friend who tweets more than a 100 tweets a day and who posts on Tumblr every day too. I mean, come on!

In case you were wondering, my tumblr is caughtinthewires.tumblr.com ….I think..

Great, thanks! I’ll have a look at your Tumblr too, soon! I still haven’t been there again, I either keep on forgetting about it or have little time to spend on the internet. And Tumblr is a huge time sucker.
