Three things.
1. Part of the reason that Presidents Day is celebrated after George Washington’s actual birthday has to do with the delayed adoption of the Gregorian calendar by the British Empire. The British Empire, not being bound by the Catholic Church, did not immediately adopt the calendar enacted by Pope Gregory that was accepted in predominately Catholic countries in 1582. The major difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars was that under the Gregorian calendar, a day is eleven minutes shorter. As time wore on, this added up. At the time of adoption by the British Empire in 1752, the switch meant that eleven days were added to the date. Americans born prior to 1752 generally celebrated their birthdays on the date of the old system. When Washington’s birthday was made a federal holiday by Congress in 1879, it was observed on February 22, his birthday with the Gregorian eleven days added.
(And, yes, I know that the system is completely different now, but that’s how it started.)
2. ‘Circadian,’ as in “circadian rhythms” comes from the Latin circa – meaning around – and dies – meaning day.
3. The phrase “beside himself,” meaning upset or very emotional, possibly originated in the New Testament. In the Book of Acts, the Roman governor Festus, hearing Paul tell King Agrippa his defense against accusations made by the Jews, says: “Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.”

1. Bruno Mars played guitar on Forget You, a Fender Stratocaster to be precise
2. Forget You isn’t the proper name of the song

4. My brother thinks that Lionel Richie is better than The Beatles
5. Bennie And The Jets contains an acoustic guitar

Pirates usually flew a black flag when not intending to attack or cause wrongdoing. When they were, they flew a red flag. Historians believe that the term Jolly Roger came from the French “jolie rouge,” meaning “pretty red.”

Downton Abbey played a major role in the creation of Canada.
Well, to be more precise, Highclere Castle (which “plays” Downton Abbey in the series), the seat of the Carnarvon family.
Many of the negotiations took place at Highclere in 1866, with Sir John A. Macdonald (future first Prime Minister of Canada) among those who took part in discussions in December 1866 to lay the groundwork for the Canadian Constitution.
Also discovered in the archives are eight weeks of almost daily correspondence between the Earl of Carnarvon and Macdonald.
It would be the Earl who would take the British North America Act to Parliament in 1867, leading to the creation of the Dominion of Canada 150 years ago today.

The last three possible names for what became Canada, still under discussion in December 1866, were, obviously, Canada (the Earl’s preference), Franklin, and (our Canadian friends will love this), Guefeleland (yes, my friends, instead being Canadians, you were almost Guefelelandians!).

This shot, from the 1926 Buster Keaton film The General, is often referred to as the most expensive shot of the entire silent film era. In it, a real train went into the (real) Row River in Cottage Grove, Oregon. It cost $42,000 at the time (about $506,000 today, though other sources estimate significantly more). The train was left in the water for years afterwards and was even a minor tourist attraction for some time. The train was finally removed from this river during World War Two for scrap metal. As of 2007, some pieces of track remain in the river.
