I have to admit I’m a bit jealous of people who have found rare items at garage sales. People in LA seem to know the value of such things, and they’re more likely to sell them on ebay or the local record store. There again, if I’d had much luck, I’d have much more to get rid of now.

parlance

I’m not sure if that was aimed at me, but I’ve never bought anything at a car boot sale. It’s really not that rare to find such deals round here. Lucky for me, I know. Would it make any difference if you shopped out of town?

^ Ah okay, sorry. That explains that then. Well if you ever come over you know to leave plenty of space in your luggage! I think I bought the first four lp’s, decent quality, for about £12 (which is about $19). Quite a bargain!

Definitely will remember that! Sadly don’t think I’ll be traveling far anytime soon, but I’ve always wanted to go to the UK as I’m part Welsh… Are you on the mainland?

I’m part Welsh, too :)

Yes, I’m in England.

I’ve always been confused because that part of my family is Irish/Welsh and I don’t know where they came over from… I’m choosing to assume Wales because I feel like that’s as close to Beatley as I can get… Although still not very close, but you get what I’m saying… Hopefully…

John considered himself Irish, you know? Both his and George’s grandparents were Irish, part of George’s family still lives in Wexford! Paul can claim Irish heritage on both sides.

John bought an island off the coast of Mayo where he intended to live after his retirement, so if John was still alive I’d live about an hour and a half away from him a-hard-days-night-john-7 Bother!

Then I will claim both just as happily! What I usually do anyway… Especially with St. Patricks Day coming up!

I am very passionate about vinyls. I think I’ve inherited that from my dad (among dozens of his vinyl collection!), who couldn’t listen to CDs for years because he loved the sound the gramophone produces too much. After persuading and pleading, I managed to convince him to move our record played in my bedroom. Now, it’s constantly on, playing wonderful music.

During my three week stay in Germany in January, I was determined to buy at least one Beatles vinyl. The only Beatles-related vinyl my dad owns is the soundtrack of the Sgt Pepper film, the one with covers of Beatles songs by lots of bands, mainly the Bee Gees.
After going through about a million records in an antique store, I finally found Wings’ Back To The Egg and a 45 record with John’s (Just Like) Starting Over and Yoko’s Kiss Kiss Kiss singles, for 1 euro each. It wasn’t until a few days later that I discovered another antique store that was specialized in records and old books. I bought the Red and the Blue Album , Help ! and Magical Mystery Tour all in a pretty good condition. I also bought two Wings 45 records, the one with Silly Love Songs and Cook of the House, the other with Hi Hi Hi and C’moon. Sadly, the rest of the Beatles records they had were a bunch of compilations, too overpriced in my opinion. But on ebay, I bought Abbey Road in a splendid condition, and recently I’ve bought Sgt Pepper for a ridiculously low price with a last minute bid.
Sadly, here behind the moon, we don’t have a place that sells record. Not in my small town, at least. I am looking forward to buying more vinyls, though.

Other than the Beatles, I’ve got a few pretty good albums by Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, Queen, The Eagles, Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan, B.B. King…

Edit: I might even post pictures sometime. Too much excitement :)

I’ve had a lot of difficulty finding Joplin lp’s. I’ve told my local dealer to call me as soon as anything comes in. Same for Pink Floyd, too.

I used to make a point of going used record shopping in every city I visited, including London and Paris.

parlance

Find anything of interest there?

I did! I’m a fan of Japan and David Sylvian, and other related solo artists, and I found quite a bit for them during two different trips to London and Cambridge. And in Paris, I found a couple of Tears for Fears CDs. This is one store I found near the Sorbonne.

Sadly, I’m pretty sure all those stores, except for the big ones like HMV and FNAC, are gone now.

parlance

@parlance, I like David Sylvian, too, and Sylvian/Fripp, and Rain Tree Crow.  Never heard much Japan.  I don’t usually go for the 80’s synth pop sound…that’s what they are, right?

Some of my favorite Sylvian songs:  Let the Happiness In, Damage, The First Day, Gone to Earth, Taking the Veil, Laughter and Forgetting, Every Colour You Are.

I’m really getting into vinyl, and have been finding a lot of great stuff lately, so I’m starting this topic to share my finds with you, the people of the BB, and to give anyone else interested a place to talk about vinyl!

When I have more time later I’ll talk about my collection…

I’ve got Sgt. Pepper on vinyl and a clear-colored “This Boy ” 45 on vinyl which I will get framed and hang on my office wall one day when I’m motivated enough. I keep digging antique stores and vinyl record shops (there’s two really good ones within relative driving distance) in the hopes I’ll come across something really exciting (like a vinyl U.S. album), but so far no luck.

Haha! I have a bunch of US Albums on vinyl because of my dad. I have Beatles ’65 and Hey Jude , as well as the US versions of Rubber Soul  and Revolver  plus the US editions (same as Britain) of Sgt. Pepper ‘s, The BeatlesLet It Be , and Abbey Road .  Also the Red and Blue Albums and Rock And Roll Music

That’s cool, first editions? Numbered White Album ?

Sadly, no. My dad was born in ’63, so he got most of his records in the 70s. And actually, we don’t have the sleeve for The White Album . My dad thought it had been stolen, until we found the first disc inside a second Red Album  sleeve we appeared to have. Only have Disc 1 though…

I prefer Disc 1, but there’s great stuff on 2 you’re missing out on… But you probably have it all digitally or on CD right?

@Mr. Kite Yeah. The records (at least the Beatles ones) are mostly for novelty, considering I already have all of the songs. My dad has like 500 records, most of which don’t match with his 400 CDs, so I have a lot of music. Sucks I can’t rip a record.

My player is my dad’s record player from the 70s. It can’t do anything digital. I might go that route, but it would take forever.

And for things I’d save, it’d go my laptop (which has all my music on it, and since I’m not bothering with saving the CDs, this is important), then my bass. Then my Beatles records. I keep my iPod in my pocket anyway. Finally, my copy of the 2012 Draft special The Hockey News with lots of player autographs, and my signed copies of Pearls Blows Up and Into The Sky With Diamonds. Since I have to worry about carrying things (and this is a flood), this a) eliminates my Xbox, which is important, but not as much as my laptop, which has everything on it. and b) things that don’t take water damage get left. If it was a fire, there’d be some other stuff I’d try to save too.

Mine’s pretty new, it’s a cassette/cd player/radio/phono and it’s good, my only problem is that it can’t rip, but nothing to complain about cuz I love it.

There’s a record fair on near me at the beginning of April, so I’m hoping toe expand my collection a bit more. I own all the Beatles albums, so it’s mostly other artist’s I’m after.

@Matt Busby our White Album ‘s must be quite close in number, I’m sure mine starts in eight. It’s a shame you lost yours though, have you no idea where you left it? It’ll probably turn up on ebay some day.

I believe it disappeared at the last couch-house I stayed at, in spring 1984. There were a ton of albums all mixed together.  I was lucky to get out with my first release Frank Sinatras and Tom Lehrer (“…and we’re poisoning pigeons in the park…”) – ok maybe you have to hear the whole thing to appreciate that one a-hard-days-night-george-10 and Robert Frost reading his poetry.  I probably forgot as many as were “lost”.  Those were some rough times, lasted a few months is all though.  It was very worn, the poster was gone…would have been a nice heirloom thing but not of any value.  I think all the Beatles albums disappeared, but they were all very worn, and were only Sgt. Peppers on up.

Half of what I say is meaningless...

I feel good in a special way, I'm in love and it's a sunny day
