X-posted from recently bough albums
I got Pipes Of Peace on vinyl yesterday. Didn’t like the title track, love Say Say Say (but I knew that already) and haven’t listened to the rest yet. I know it isn’t gonna be great, but hope it’d not horrible

Haven’t listened yet because, as I just mentioned on the listening thread I got some Wings albums a few days ago. Venus And Mars , London Town , and Back To The Egg .
Listening to Venus And Mars for the first time. Lonely Old People is on now. And like I also said on the other topic I think my favorite so far is Medicine Jar with Jimmy on lead vocals, followed by Rock Show then Letting Go.

Pipes Of Peace isn’t his greatest work.
On another note, I don find it quite peculiar how in Record Shops and Fairs I always come across the same albums which I already own (Venus And Mars , Pipes Of Peace , Wings Over America ) yet have still yet to even see a vinyl of RAM or Tug Of War . or Press To Play . or Wild Life for that matter.

I must admit that if there is one thing I love about living behind the moon, it has to be that I’ve bought 6 Beatles records that haven’t even cost me 20 euro! Another thing would be that I can download just about anything and without anyone over my head.
Where would that be a problem to download?? Here in Canada, there is no problem.
Back to vinyl, I am soo happy to have spent over 2 months buying the complete Original Beatles UK LPs. The Yellow mono Parlophones, and Stereo Apple LPs.
Like I mentioned in other posts, it cost me about the same as what people are paying for the 2012 stereo re-issue LP set, and the new 2014 mono re-issue LP set together, but I’ve got the real thing, and in pretty decent shape for their age.
BEATLES Music gives me Eargasms!

I know Pipes Of Peace isn’t one of his best, that’s probably why I haven’t gotten around to it yet!
And I’ve seen multiple copies of Wings Over America too. The others aren’t as common where I am, but definitely haven’t seen Ram or Tug Of War around and the closest to Press To Play was a 12 inch single of the song. I luckily found Wild Life after my local record store got a big collection, but it didn’t have the sleeve.

I have already put this in Pimp Your Stuff but I thought I would show it here because its relevant. I have made a video of me showing my Paul McCartney vinyl collection. As of today I now have 7 more albums to add to this collection:

I hope to make more vinyl videos so any suggestions would be appreciated

My son and his gf were in town yesterday, and looked through the family collection of 200+, mostly pre-1970 vinyl. I thought all the Beatles albums had been appropriated during a rough time in my early 20s when I was living from couch to couch, but we found one that I had never heard of. I’ll tell the story of discovery in some detail, first because it’s exciting, and second to possibly help new collectors identify exactly which albums they have and how rare they are (I know with us, the monetary value isn’t a big deal, as we probably aren’t going to sell them).
First off, look for multiple cites with the same information. There were an incredible number of Beatles albums released, and the difference between very rare and very common can be as minor as the order of the credits on the label (author – singer or singer – author). Some sites had more detail while others missed some, and some had conflicting info. I searched on the (sleeve) record number, SW-385, and the (sleeve) album name, Hey Jude. Many of you will know this is an early 1970 USA release. The Apple label identified it as an early release. The fact that the label and the matrix number were SO-385, not SW, means it was the first pressing. And finally, the label had the album title as “The Beatles Again” (as opposed to the spine title). Determining exactly what this meant took careful comparison of lots of similar labels. It identified it as a very early version that was pulled from the shelves, as the album’s title had just been finalized as Hey Jude as the first copies were shipped (the sleeve had been corrected but not the vinyl). One source indicated this version could be found on shelves as late as 1973, but it’s still quite rare. An unopened copy with the rarest sticker just sold on ebay for $2k USD! It doesn’t have one of the very rare alternate back sleeve pictures, but that’s the kind of thing you might discover you own by doing the research. And yes, I know this doesn’t happen very often, but there are so many slightly different Beatles releases, and you can never know just how rare a particular copy is. To me it’s part of the excitement of being a Fabfan.
Fortunately, my dad took good care of his albums. I’m not a record grader, but considering there are no visible scratches, and not any pop and crackle, I think the vinyl is NM. Unfortunately, 40 years of sometimes poor storage conditions has left the sleeve in G condition at best. (the scale is NM (near mint), EX/VG+ (EX is the European designation and VG+ the equivalent US grade), VG, G, F, and P). Each notch down in condition cuts the value in half. I’m not sure given the widely different conditions of the sleeve and vinyl, but it should worth at least $100 USD based on the vinyl alone. Again, I won’t be selling it – my oldest son collects vinyl too so it will go to his collection once his life stabilizes after college. I got him a fairly rare copy of Revolver for his birthday. When I can afford it, I’m going to get the best of our vinyl digitized to preserve the vinyl “sound” as well the vinyl itself.
Some songs sound like different mixes than I’ve ever heard (and some comments I found on boards indicated that others noticed the same thing with different versions of stuff), so I’m not sure what that means. It was produced by George Martin. The track listing follows:
Can’t Buy Me Love, I Should Have Known Better, Paperback Writer, Rain , Lady Madonna, Revolution
Hey Jude, Old Brown Shoe, Don’t Let Me Down (definitely not the Let it Be or Naked mix there, and I don’t think the single or Anthology versions either), and Ballad of John and Yoko. I promise to get a needle-drop version to share via youtube when I get the money!
So that was my excitement for the week (other than my son and his very cool gf driving the 3 hours to visit). For fun and learning, research your vinyl!
If you’re interested, the other albums in the collection are mostly average, in average condition and many are re-releases. By far the most valuable is a 78 of my father at age 10 (1948) playing the piano. It’s the only time my kids have ever heard either grandfather’s voice. There are a few that may have some monetary value, but again, they are practically family heirlooms at this point. I stupidly slit open the cellophane on Rush’s Moving Pictures to play for my son, who didn’t care for it. Another highlight is the box set of conductor George Szell’s seminal work, Beethoven’s 9 symphonies with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra.

@Matt Busby So you didn’t lose them all! That’s exciting, maybe there’s another original hanging around that you haven’t found.
I’m interested in how your father got the recording of himself on the vinyl. Did he ever tell you?

He played over the radio, and his mother had it recorded. Not on those cheap military “hi dad” things, a thick 78. The one we have is when he was 8, there is/was another from when he was 10 but we haven’t seen it in years
Dad was a severe alcoholic and most of the stuff I know about his childhood came from his mother to my mother.

Well, it’s nice that you have that, and I hope the other one turns up. You thought you got rid of all your Beatles records and that ones there, so hopefully you have it around.

Hey, I bought the CD edition of that very Szell-Beethoven box just a coupla months ago! $20 – I figured it was a bargain just to get the four symphonies I didn’t already have versions of. Sound quality isn’t as good as I would’ve hoped, and I don’t seem to like the version of the Fifth as much as the first one I heard, but that was fairly predictable. Much as I hate to admit it, I’ll bet the vinyl sounds better. (Also a lot heavier)
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

@vonbontee, tbh, I haven’t listened to them in several years, and even then only the 3rd and 6th…the others probably haven’t been played for over 30 years. But my memory is that the sound is excellent. Mom’s turntable isn’t the most lp-friendly, but maybe I’ll pull one out and critique the sound quality. I couldn’t find a comparison of the analog vs. digital (as opposed to our boys who have mono-lovers, stereo-lovers, vinyl lovers, certain producers, certain labels, etc ad nauseum). Here’s a well written critique of the set.
One bbs comment I read indicated different pressings, or perhaps how many pressings have already been made from a particular master, can make some differences in terms of accentuating the higher or lower frequencies or even the middle ones (that make it sound muddy when cranked too loud). That certainly sounds plausible.
Certainly $20 for the set is a bargain.

@Matt Busby That’s $20 Canadian, so an even bigger bargain! 🙂 (About 18-and-change USD last time I looked)You obviously grew up in a house with cool vinyl. (I remember you said “The Firebird” was a favourite)
My dad was a true music lover – that’s where I got it from and where my sons did. He took flute and piano as a child; I took violin and piano, my oldest son took oboe, guitar, choir, barbershop quartet, and now banjo. Some other stuff in the collection: Lots of Polka from my Czech great grandfather, Hank Williams, Frank Sinatra (some of those might be first releases), a bunch of classical, some Jazz, Chicago’s Transit Authority, a Moody Blues. There’s stuff like Chet Baker, Errol Garner, the Dave Clark 5, over a dozen Christmas albums! Ray Charles, Ramsey Lewis, Santana’s Abraxas, couple Jimi’s. When I think about what disappeared I could cry (numbered copy of the White Album ). One time we entered a sports car rally, and won about 20 albums from the university radio station that sponsored it. Among them were a promo-only release Grateful Dead album and James Taylor’s Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. I guess I could go on but then so could many of us. I just love to talk about music!
My mom isn’t a huge music fan, but she loved seeing Ringo (actually she loved the all starr band more!). She kept going on about how small he is. Why is that relevant enough to mention at least a half dozen times? – she’s actually a very cool mom and quite hip for 76, we’re going to see John Fogerty next month :)…ok it’s late and I’m starting to ramble. goodnight!

I’ve been meaning to post about some interesting records I have for a long time now, and noticed something while looking at my Beatles vinyls that made me think I should do it already!
This is my copy of Let It Be .
It’s not in the best condition, (I think I got it for a dollar or two,) and has a few skips throughout. I can still listen to it though so not horrible. It’s an original Brazilian release from 1970 on Apple which is why it is possible for it to be in mono.
Mono! Yes I said Let It Be in mono! But weren’t all Beatles records after The Beatles only available in stereo? Yes! Which is why I find this cool. Although there was no official mono mix and it’s just a fold-down of the stereo mix, it’s still pretty cool in my opinion. Brazil was the only country to release LIB in mono as everyone else realized stereo was the format to be listening to at that time.
Another interesting thing is this stamp on the front:
It says:
DO DISCO
Jose de Barros No 329
There a little cut off before it. But that’s most of it. The strange thing is that the cut off part looks as if it’s under the black of the label, like it’s part of the label design, not stamped on top.
I looked up the name but found nothing, but it was probably a club and a DJ.
If anyone knows anything about that or this pressing, please shed some light on it!
