Anyway, I learnt When I’m Cleaning Windows by George Formby. It’s quite difficult, the strumming, that’s where I really need to step up my game now. Not simply the rhythm or the speed but keeping it up through the song, its exhausting! All the transcriptions I found were broken in one way or another too, I had to refer to a youtube to figure them out.

We all do; I’ve gotten braver about searching for things over the year. (I would say years but I’ve only been here just over a year 🙂 )

So here’s something I recorded today, its a parody using Formby about a dreadful space game being developed by some dodgy people, and I’ve been doing a few of them lately. That’s Sally with the new strings on the left channel. You can see that even a pulse of 110bpm is quite a job to follow and put swing into. That’s death kazoo btw, and sorry for the airhorn at the end, that’s another in-joke, its all mostly in-jokes I just thought you’d like to hear my attempts to play it!

Great to get to hear Sally! Your production sounds like it was done in a professional studio. I liked your bending technique on the kazoo – like playing the harmonica 🙂

Haha no it was sooo unprofessional! Maybe its the microphone, its a nice Perception 220, it uses the same kind of circuit as the famous Neumann U87. Everything but me, the kazoo and Sally was done in FL Studio, a sequencer/synth program, so all those instruments are just samples (I like my fake organ tho). The kazoo was then treated with a phaser effect to make it warble a little more but I do like making swooshing noises with it 😀

Speaking of fun, if you go check out http://www.ukesterbrown.com/ he’s got a nice collection of ukes and songs to learn. He’s a really good player, but I think he’s a bit naughty too:

Here’s my current collection. The newest, my Pixie sopranino, arrived a week or so ago. It’s small but actually a lot of fun to play. In the middle is my first uke, the Kala KA-S, and on the right is my Vox Ukelectric, which is still my go-to instrument.

I’ve improved my strumming a lot lately but ran into a small snag – I need a bit of fingernail to do it but that conflicts with my finger style on bass so I had to snip it for another song I recorded. I guess I’ll have to change my bass fingering! I’ve now used my ukes for reggae, and I’m planning on doing funky Prince-style licks for a new song parody.

@Joe your sopranino looks adorable, looks like a nice thick neck too and the tuners are cool! I’m still thinking about a new soprano, going to check out the local uke club and get some feedback on my playing and see what people are playing.

Almost have the ukulele acquisition worked out. It appears that in return Madame Butterfly will soon be the proud owner of a King Charles Cavalier puppy. In the meantime I’m thinking of buying this book but the cover is just so strange…

This one is just for you uker’s, Honey Pie for (Cedric the) ukulele, voice, kazoo and two bass guitars. Note the limits of my vocal range. Sometimes I do this song better than other days, but hey, I actually yodel at one point, that’s a bonus.

I learnt ‘Run Of The Mill ‘ on the guitar yesterday, and it was stuck in my head last night. I was thinking of ukuleles, and so I thought out the uke chords whilst (supposedly) falling asleep; I shall give ’em a bash when I’m finished listening to the sounds of crazy diamonds shining in from the other room, where Silly Dad and Little Girl are blasting it out. a-hard-days-night-george-9

Crossposting from the Your Beatles Covers thread:

Playing Cedric in the right channel. It’s in D, it’s pretty easy on uke. The tricky bits are the little breakdowns which I cover by playing D-D7-Bm-G6. Almost makes up for the dreadful fake synth guitar I had to use (still saving for a proper one!).

I discovered that Stephin Merrit of the Magnetic Fields is a massive ukulele fan/player. He says he has to explain to Germans that no, it isn’t a broken out of tune guitar, its a ukulele, because they don’t have them there! Imagine a country with no ukuleles! Here he is with a 8-string uke! He seems to be singing this song in a much lower key than the album version, which is in C. It’s a weird song, I like the tune.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 That looks like a bass ukulele to me. I’d rather have that Fender P-bass in the background, myself.

Hi, no that’s a mandolin. Sorry if you were urgently awaiting a reply! Anyway, I’ve just added Reg to the family:

reg-onebay.jpgImage Enlarger

now before you shake your head and mutter “midlife-crisis penguin”: while he’s just a Kala soprano in fancy clothes, he is one of the older generation of Ukadelics which are still Kala and not Makala and the design is discontinued, so I’m lucky to find one in Australia and especially at the insane price (because it was a display uke). Also, I can put the low G back on Sally, the Aquila Reds are great for picking, but I find the Nygluts much better for strumming.

But speaking of midlife-crisis, I am thinking about getting a Pono AS Acacia soprano in the future, its not hugely expensive here and they’re a very nice solid body and are the cheaper Ko’olau. Although I could switch for an AC, they’re not much more. It’s about £200 in the old money.
