This is the thread for the BBs here who are gamers.  Hardcore online gamers, old-school console players, casual app enthusiasts and everything in between.

I’m what I guess you’d call an “older gamer”.  My first console was an Intellivision back in 1981.  I’m now a happy owner of a PS3 (since 2007).  My gaming has mostly been casual, but as some very excellent games are now available dirt-cheap I’ve gravitated towards a few deeper immersive experiences.  I’ve been playing Fallout 3 and it’s expansion New Vegas for about a year now, and I just played through the first chapter of the new season of Walking Dead.

So what are your gaming tastes, if any?

I’m not really a gamer. I have an Xbox 360, on which I play mostly sports games and LEGO games. I play manager career on FIFA 14 way too much. My favorite sport is hockey, so I have NHL 14, that gets a lot of play. And, of course, The Beatles: Rock Band.a-hard-days-night-ringo-10

I am one of the world’s most dedicated dinosaur gamers.  My 3 kids (2 not at home these days) and I are all dedicated gamers.  We have PCs made for games, X-Box (original) and 360, PS2 and PS3, PSP, 3DSx3 and various other legacy systems.

We play everything out there.  I like RPGs (like Dragon Age) and co-op games (Gears of War series, the latest Splinter Cell, Dynasty Warriors 8, Diablo III on console etc.) to play with my son.  I have also been into MMOs for a LONG time, been playing Lord of the Rings Online with a lot of fellow Aussies since 2007.

Of the games mentioned so far we like FIFA and Fallout 3 / New Vegas.  On the PC my kids like Sims 3 and I like Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV.  My son is awesome at FPS games, and I occasionally join him on Halo games and the Call of Duty series.  We have, at a rough guess, over 300 games on the shelves.  We have a dedicated computer room and separate console games areas.

I don’t really play (except the old school Nintendo/Super Nintendo) but my hubby is a big gamer.  He just bought the “Xbox One” on boxing day, got a pretty decent deal.  It’s a pretty fancy system!  We have fun with the voice-command thing.  a-hard-days-night-john-1 I love gamer guys.  They’re usually safe at home.  heart

I started out with a BBC Electron/Micro B, then Atari, SNES, N64, PS2 and Wii. I pretty much stopped after completing GTA San Andreas. Many happy memories particularly of GoldenEye and Zelda on the N64.

I do like gaming but nowadays I find the investment of time completely offputting. Who has 60 hours to complete a game? I certainly don’t. The last game I played was The Room 2 on the iPad (that and its predecessor are both brilliant if you’re into puzzle games).

I’m not really much of a gamer. I had a Wii which I liked, but I think it broke because it’s in a box in the garage now. I had the board thing which you can do all sorts on (I liked doing yoga on it). Does that count as a video game?

My sister had one in which you had to fly this spaceship thing around New York. It was quite futiristic and used some good music. It looked really fun. I think that’s the only one that I wish I could play, but I’m rubbish at driving (or flying) games, and this one was particularly hard.

Does anyone here play Grand Theft Auto? What’s it like and why do people make such a big deal about it? I saw the news where it said that people were paying something like, what was it…, 40 pounds? Seems a bit steep for a game.

GTA is just fun because it recreates a massive city and nearby country area in astonishing detail and feels like it is a living, breathing entity in which you can roam freely around and do as you like (hijack cars, drive like a loon, play sports, explore for hidden items) as well as having an awesome campaign and side missions based on a hyper-charged version of a crime/action movie.  40 pounds for what you get is a bargain (check out how many hours Joe got out of one of the series).

Wow – seems like I’m the only serious gamer here (so far) – in terms of proportion of leisure time I spend playing.

^^ I suppose you must have had to play the game (or at least to know a bit of how it is) to justify to yourself the price of it. If it feels real then maybe it is worth it.

There’s probably more than a few, they just probably haven’t come across the thread yet, give it time.  I spend more hours than I’d like to admit to playing video games, but I have to say that I’ve avoided the GTA franchise, I’m pretty liberal in what I let my kid play but this one’s banned from my household.  I don’t have much of a problem with drugs and violence in games but from what I’ve heard about this one it’s over the top, violence against women and torture is where I draw the line.  I, like the OP, first began with Intellivision in the 1980s (actually Telestar from the 70s but I try to forget about that one!) and have gone through stretches where I play games a lot and then don’t play them at all, depending on what’s happening at the time.  Right now, I see the industry sagging somewhat, games are being made more to look good than play good, in my opinion.  I’ve been a supporter of XBOX for years now, but I’m not at all happy with the new ONE console and won’t be buying one, it’s more about gimmicks (Kinect) and Apps now and gaming has become secondary in the CRApp Hub that it is.  I bought a new AlienWare gaming PC last year and am returning to PC Gaming which was what I was doing before I joined LIVE.

Of course my favourite game of all time is ‘The Beatles RockBand’ and have spent more time playing that than any other game for sure.  I’ve gone through three drumsets (all collector Ringo Ludwig kits) and am in dire need of a fourth, but they’re getting harder to find and more and more expensive.  I still have my Hofner Beatle Bass in fine working order though, but unfortunately the game isn’t as active as it used to be, probably because many others are in need of replacement instruments and I wouldn’t at all be surprised if the servers are shut down before too much longer.  I’m a big fan of the MASS Effect series and the Batman Arkham games, among others.  I can think of worse addictions than video games which have probably help keep me out of trouble more than I realise…:-)

It’s just what games cost – though we usually wait a few months until they drop to half price before buying.

Unless it’s the latest greatest JRPG and we just have to have it NOW – like Ni No Kuni  <– REAL game talk :)

Couldn’t for the life of me justify paying £40 for a video game.

I played one of the Grand Theft Auto’s a few years ago on the PC and found it more fun taking on the police and the local Mafia than doing the missions – it is such a buzz getting chased by the cops. Now tho i just don’t have the desire to play them and it seems so expensive, especially when you throw in the consoles and everything.

The idea of standing in a queue for 12 hours for a new release baffles me.

*bump*

Anyone here playing anything new?

I’m waiting for the second installment of season 2 of ‘The Walking Dead’.  I’m really starting to enjoy the narrative-based adventures such as WD and the Back To The Future game.  I just DLed the demo for “A Wolf Among Us” which is the same idea.

Meanwhile, my kids are obsessed with Minecraft, which you can now play on the PS3.  I like the open-world LEGO-style building quality to it, but I hate the production design.  It’s so obnoxiously low-fi, I feel like I’m looking at a mid-1990s FPS.
