For the first time since 2008, we actually get a little bit of a refund on our federal taxes instead of having to pay. Woot! We get a refund of a whopping $199. It will go towards house insurance. derek-taylor_01_gif

Question: is there a politically correct term to refer to someone from the US besides "American"?

1) I don't think so. 2) WTF is wrong with 'American'? a-hard-days-night-john-7 3) I don't particularly believe in political correctness, though, so... mccartney-shrug_01_gif

Also, I still use 'to Zig' occasionally. It usually happens in real life and not on the forum, though.

America = two continents. The US = one country. Therefore, America does not = the US. Canadians and Mexicans and Brazilians and anyone else in North America or South America could legitimately call themselves "American" if they liked, and it would be true. It's just a pet peeve of mine... doesn't stop me from using the term, though, because there's no other way to refer to a US-ian (ew, that sounds horrible, blegh).

Hehe, I derailed the derail thread againahdn_george_06

Oh. I suppose I do see what you mean. ahdn_george_01 Thanks, now my inner semantics-pedantic will never sleep again a-hard-days-night-paul-10 ahdn_george_08

I wouldn't worry about it too much, though. Language evolves, and while the word 'American' can, technically, by its original definition, refer to 'someone from The Americas, north and south,' it has colloquially meant 'someone from the USA' for years and years and years. That's just what it means, at this point, in common parlance.

Anyway, at the rate folks are crossing the borders, we'll all be US-Americans afore too long billy-preston_01_gif a-hard-days-night-george-10a-hard-days-night-george-10a-hard-days-night-george-10

So do you Americans (a-hard-days-night-george-10) not like the term Yank/Yankee?

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 NOOOOAAAAHHHHTHANNAHHHS!

In the US, the term 'Yankee' tends to refer specifically to people from New England/the Northeastern states in general. So it didn't occur to me as I do not self-identify as a Yankee (being born and raised in the South), but in England (or Australia, or whatever) I would be a Yankee because I'm from the States. It's relative/contextual. ahdn_george_01

I'm a very opinionated person but most of the issues that get discussed are issues that I don't really know enough about to contribute.

...yes. Usually it's something short and bitchy that I just type to get out of my system, and then hit 'cancel' so I don't hurt anyone's feelings. Win-win. john-lennon-salute_gif
