Offline Requests have been made previously to DO over this, I’m not going hunting but if anyone wants to find them feel free.
On a personal note I have frequently made it clear on here that I don’t want my personal private details made known or discussed.
Speaking with my mod hat on, I think that is a better starting point that forum users opt in to discussing their private lives rather than having to make a statement saying please let the outside forum me remain outside the forum.

Offline I mean it’s only guessing their ages based on what they put on the forum. I know it can seem a bit creepy, but then again if you don’t want your age to be guessed then don’t post clues about it.
That’s my two cents on the situation, take it or leave it.

Who’s posting clues? If you mean saying you were 12 when you read a book that’s not a clue inviting follow-up questions based on your life.

Offline People post cules all the time about their personal info on the forum.
Users have notified me about it and I have notifed others about it.
I say the best thing to do is PM the user about it so they can deal with the security breach as they see fit. Some users are ok with it while others are not.
And stuff like that the twelve and a book can be used to find stuff by evil people even if that isn’t the users intent.
Like say you say “Oh I remeber Harry Potter, I read the entire series when I was 12”
That could give age clues that you might not want to give.
A few age lies scattered about might help and for location, don’t get too spesific, i recommend only going down to state/country level depending on how secret you want to be.
There are evil people out there that, if something you say unintentionally pushes them over the edge, they could use that info to find you.
Just use internet smarts and stay safe to everyone.

Well I don’t mean intentional clues, but one has to be careful what they post for all the world to see. Tho I agree it can be a bit creepy, there are worse things out there. That’s just what I think. The whole blame can’t be put on the age guesser solely. If the info is there, it’s your fault for posting it.

How do the mods know if someone is just speculating on someone’s age, or if they are using statements made by the person elsewhere on forum?
For instance, ignoring the fact that I have met him, and I’m never good at guessing ages based on appearance, I’m happy to say @Joe is in his early 40s. Am I speculating, or is that based on something he’s said here, and may have forgotten he said?
I’m not speculating, but basing it on this post of Joe’s in another thread, discussing John’s death:
I was only four years old at the time, and probably only dimly aware of The Beatles’ music. The gruesome truth, apparently, is that I’d just been sick in our house; my mum was cleaning it up when my dad came to the bathroom and said “John Lennon‘s been shot”. I’m told they were both numb with shock.
This may sound horrible, but in a way I’m quite glad it happened while I wasn’t old enough to understand. As I was growing up John was always a historical figure, whereas the other Beatles still had a public persona of sorts. I really wouldn’t know how I’d deal with hearing about such a brutal event now.
Yes, fair enough to pick someone up if they’re being creepy about it, but unfair if they make a straightforward statement based on statement’s made by the subject.
Do you have a list of those who have never mentioned their age and/or age group? Otherwise you’re banning everyone mentioning the age of others, whether that person has previously mentioned either their specific age or an age group they fall within (which there is a whole thread about).
I’m not trying to be awkward here, just trying to understand this new position (which should be added to the rules if that is what it is).
