I Assumed they were metallic like flutes…

Flutes are most commonly gold and silver. Mine has a nickel silver body. I don’t like the feel of gold… even on a lip plate. A lot of flute players are snobby. I might be one of them. Flute is only the second favourite thing i play though

@Von Bontee It says the video is not available.  I can’t think of any pop music using a piccolo, so I looked up Herbie Mann and this song sounds like he’s playing piccolo at the beginning and end (in the middle he does a solo I think switched to flute):

Huh that’s weird, the video not appearing. It was Bobby Day’s 1958 smash “Rockin’ Robin”; a three-note piccolo part is used to simulate a bird for the song’s intro and outro, and also gets a 12-bar solo.

I can’t think offhand of many recordings I have of piccolo…Beethoven used one in the final movement of his 5th symphony, and Pharoah Sanders played one alongside John Coltrane’s flute in “To Be” (Coltrane’s sole recording on flute)

Here is a good example of the difference playing a familiar piece…

Haha, not familiar to me, I’ve not seen the Potter films! (Von Niece loves ’em) Cool spooky theme…When I saw “Hedwig” there, I first thought it was referring to this:

So is the piccolo’s range comparable to that of the flute except an octave higher?

Congratulations!  I was never in band, but I did take piano in high school, and at the end of the year we all played “Rhapsody in Blue” (which begins with a famous ascending glissando on the clarinet). We had no clarinet, it was just a battalion of electric pianos, and we were HORRIBLE! Out of tune and a mess!paul-mccartney

Rhapsody In Blue is one of the first songs my band director showed me. It’s special to us lol. I love that piece. I can listen to it all day

Do either of you two play the clarinet? I don’t, and can’t read music a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 but I can certainly hear that huge arpeggio in my head right now! (I’ve only played recordings of the full “RIB” maybe a half-dozen times for enjoyment, total; but have heard the opening many many more times over decades in various media; usually to evoke “elegant Jazz Age Manhattan”)

Very beginning of this YouTube.  That musical notation doesn’t seem to do justice to the slide effect clarinet players do with Rhapsody in Blue

I have some friends getting me later and we are all going to go to Beale, Hard Rock Cafe, and a museum about memphis music together.

Fun Fact: Hard Rock Cafe’s original model was the Finger Diner in my hometown Finger, Tennessee. .

Sounds like you’ll be living this song Neely. I dig the line “When you haven’t got a prayer, You’ve got a prayer in Memphis”.

@sigh butterfly, that song has the part “Muriel plays piano every Friday at the Hollywood” and he goes there and sings. I took mom and her friends (bottom picture) there to eat. Top photo is of the piano from the song. The place is known as the home of the fried pickel.

Thanks for the pics @Ahhh Girl. All smiles here on Easter weekend a-hard-days-night-paul-8.

Hollywood Cafe opens in 5 minutes. I’ll have blackened catfish and hush puppies with a side of pickles please (and a slice of pecan pie to go).  Maybe my daughter can play a tune to entertain the folks while we wait (this is her exact playing style). heart

Their pecan pie is delicious!

The part of the song that goes

She said
“Tell me are you a Christian child?”
And I said “Ma’am, I am tonight”

Makes more sense when you know Marc Cohn is Jewish.

That pecan pie does look good. I should go there considering I only am about 30 minutes away. I didn’t even know about this restaurant until today. Hell, I didn’t even know Gus’s or Huey’s until I moved here 3 years ago now.

I am curious… do you say puh-kaun or pi-can?

ahdn_paul_06a-hard-days-night-ringo-8

I never knew that about Marc AG. Now that part of the song makes a lot more sense.

Neely, in California we say pee-kan but according to this that’s the UK pronunciation.

I just thought of an algebra equation (I knew 4 years of HS math would come in handy some day!) a-hard-days-night-john-1

John said there would be no Beatles without Elvis.

Elvis said there would be no rock ‘n roll without Memphis. So:

Beatles=A

Elvis=B

Memphis=C

If A=B

& B=C

then A=C

I think that means Neely deserves a comp ticket to the show. apple01
