I think that in Dutch, we can use both kinds of quotation marks. I’ve seen both of them being used anyway

I’m only fluent in English, but I know a little Italian and a little German.  Don’t expect me to ever speak either.

Well, I’m out of this thread forever.

Yeah, I’m from Finland and I speak Finnish. There’s a link to graphic novel about the Beatles. It’s available in Finnish and English too. It’s written and illustrated by Mauri Kunnas, one of my favorite writers/illustrators! I loved (and still do!) his books when I was little a-hard-days-night-john-6

I was doing some prepositions exercise (aka a pain in the arse) in German a few days back and I stumbled upon the word ‘Linde’, I thought “oh cool @Linde ‘s name is mentioned on my sheet. Then I looked up ‘Linde’ in the dictionary it means…

‘Lime tree’

What a random word

Also an embarrassing moment, I was in German (again) and the teacher said “Name a country that starts with ‘Die”, now I thought she said “D” as they sound phonetically the same, so of course me being me said (quite loudly and very confidently) “Deutschland” and my teacher said “Ah no AppleScruff, I meant Die as in Die Schweiz”

I got laughed at (by about 3 people who understood what I did), I still found it funny thougha-hard-days-night-john-6a-hard-days-night-george-4

die Linde also means “linden tree”:

— of which perhaps the lime tree is a small variety:

^^^ Well you learn something new everyday

Although the amount of times that I have said “linden tree” or “lime tree” is surprisingly quite few (I know it’s astonishing!)

Yeah I knew that. In Dutch it’s just called ”een Linde” so I’ve heard about every tree joke there is to make in my life. Linde is originally a German name.

My mom was thinking of calling me ”Lynde” instead of Linde, but she didn’t, because that wasn’t common and then people would make mistakes. Lynde is an English name, apparently. I think Linde with an Y instead of an I looks cool though.

It all means the same though. Just like Linda, Lindy and all those names. It’s all the same.

Haec ego, resurrecturos (Romanes eunt domus)

Pardon my Latin but the thread shall be resurrected (par la puissance de Greyskull)

I have an idea to help all of us who aren’t fluent in another language and that is through the magic idea of:

Code-switching

Basically switching between deux ou trois/quatre languages in the hope that we can better improve our languages. If we can just put des mots that we are writing in another  language in italics then maybe we can learn something (or not).

Let’s see if this will work seeing as (if I remember correctly, I’m too lazy to read the last two pages), our main forum languages are French and Spanish if we type in only them for a bit until we see how it goes.

Beatle-word of the day in French

The Beatles= Les Beatles (pronunciation ‘lay Beatles’)

Bonus: ‘A Hard Day’s Night ‘ (the film) in French is called ‘Quatre garcons dans le vent’ literally ‘four boys in the wind’…yeah I don’t understand it either.

I speak English (obviously), French, a little Spanish, a little Russian, and a little German. I can only really converse in English or French though.

Look its a thingy! A fiendish thingy!
