Offline 50 years ago at approximately this time, 1:20am on the 28th, New York City Police raided the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street to roust and rob the queens and the queers. It was a regular event, creating a hostile environment. They’d hand over their cash, one or two would take a beating, and then they’d all go home, to play it all out again a few nights later.
This time they decided they wouldn’t go home…

…the modern Gay Rights movement was born on this day 50 years ago. The first Pride march was held within 6 months of the Stonewall Riots. Today it is the LGBTQ+ movement. We’ve come a long way in these fifty years, not far enough but… I watched a gentleman who was in the Stonewall that night say how he never thought he’d see equal marriage in his lifetime, and he now has a husband, and State after State legalises, as does country after country.
The times they are a-changin’. We’ve come a long long way together…
Happy 50th birthday to the battle for another form of Civil Rights.
I salute those who stood the line.
