I remember my aunt telling me about this 40 years ago tomorrow, and showing me the picture in the paper – first time I’d seen how much weight he’d gained, compared to the cover of her old copy of Elvis’ Golden Records which had become mine a few years previous. That was probably little VB’s favourite album through much of the mid 70’s – used to perform silly rock star moves with a bit of shelving in hands like a guitar as the record played in my room.
Playing Elvis at Sun right now. RIP big guy

I’m surprised that there isn’t an Elvis compilation marking the 40th anniversary of his death, they seem to release one for every other anniversary of his life. Could be something along the lines of ‘The 40 greatest Elvis songs as voted by his fans’.

There’s a Greatest Hits CD competing for Number 1 against Ed Sheeran in the UK charts at the mo if I remember correctly. I read a news article on it.

I presume that’s a re-release and they haven’t just taken an old album and are pretending it’s a brand new compilation.
I found a Youtube advert that shows it’s a re-release, tho considering there are over a billion Elvis compilations out there it’s almost impossible to create a new one now.

I put Elvis up there with The Beatles and Prince as one of my favorite artists of all time. He had the Voice, he had the Charisma, and for a while he had the songs to back him up as well.
Yeah, Elvis had some terrible songs and career choices but the good outshine the bad

@PurplishRain, good to see you are a big Elvis fan as well. He ranks right up there with John Lennon for me.

I’d have to agree with that statement. So many great songs

Elvis is misunderstood. John Lennon loved Elvis, but I’d venture a guess that he didn’t really understand Elvis, because he said that only the rock and roll period was good, and that he “died when he went into the army.”
Elvis wasn’t just a rock star. Elvis aspired to be a universal star. That’s why he sang virtually every genre of music during his lifetime. He sang rock, country, folk, easy listening, gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, etc. Not only that, he appealed to everyone, white or black. And Elvis was the first rock star to be androgynous. He had long hair (for the times) and wore mascara and pink lace shirts. His bedroom in the Audubon Drive house in Memphis had frilly bedspreads, a hot pink theme, and teddy bears everywhere.

I’d say that’s arguable. Little Richard has, at the least, an equal claim – if not greater.
Richard’s use of make-up was always much more overt, and his act was full of challenges to the acceptable gender roles of the time, with Tutti Frutti starting out as a song about anal sex, while many suggest that Long Tall Sally is either a transvestite or transgender.

I wondered if Long Tall Sally was about a transgender woman, but I’ve seen this theory debunked. I heard it is about an actual woman named Sally who lost her hair.
You are correct. I should have said he was the first white rock star to be androgynous.

Can someone please recommend me some great rock n roll songs by Elvis? I love Hound Dog, Burning Love, All Shook Up and Jailhouse Rock. I, as with most people, aren’t a fan of his soppy 60s work, so to hear some good rock n roll with his amazing voice would be perfect.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Have always been of the opinion that Elvis is mostly crap so was surprised to listen to ‘Elvis at Stax’ and there is some good material on the collection.
Additionally, I discovered I have take 6 of ‘Suspicious Minds’ on my laptop (no idea where I got it from) and stripped of the wailing backing singers it’s a much superior version compared to the familiar recording.

Elvis Presley is running for Congress in Arkansas
A man named Elvis Presley is hoping to get Congress all shook up.Not the long-deceased “Heartbreak Hotel” singer Elvis Aaron Presley, above — but his Star City, Arkansas-based namesake, Elvis D. Presley.Presley will represent the Libertarian Party to run against Rep. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) in this year’s election to represent the 1st Congressional District in eastern Arkansas, reports The Associated Press. And as this Facebook video appears to show, the automotive-refinish technician also happens to do a mean impersonation of “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”:
The Libertarian Party of Arkansas announced its candidates on Monday, following a conference. Presley legally changed his name to that of the legendary singer-songwriter, reports Arkansas Online, which said his former name wasn’t known.
EDIT: Apparently, Facebook videos don’t embed on the Beatles Bible. Sorry.
