That is a very good point, @Little Piggy Dragonguy! Now that I think about it, I probably agree with that statement, almost purely because I hate hypocrites, but still, that would be like saying anyone who doesn’t have a Mongolian citizenship, yet still lives in Mongolia and calls it home, isn’t allowed to celebrate on the 11th of July (their national day). If you can interpret what I mean from those jumbled sentences, have a, because I don’t even know if I can!

I don’t agree with that. Your example is different. A better comparison would be that people who hate Mongolia and Mongolians shouldn’t be allowed to celebrate on their national day.

Exactly what I said:

That’s a much better way of putting it…

So what do you guys think about people with a strong disdain for God and people who believe in him celebrating religious holidays?
People can do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t physically hurt other people. People could give gifts on Christmas under a burning effigy of Jesus for all I care.

I’m not Christian, but I celebrate Christmas because my close family does and they want me to be there since it’s important to them. If I was completely on my own I wouldn’t celebrate it, but right now I do it for their benefit.
I don’t hate God now, but I did in the past. As a young child I was very poor and usually had to live with extended family members. Most of them spent their time screaming at or beating the living daylights out of me because they thought I was going to Hell due to my sexuality. For a long time I wasn’t allowed to leave the house unless I was going to school or church, so I was never exposed to any other kind of Christian and thought all of them were like that.
Some years ago I met a very nice Catholic girl who showed me that religious people could be wonderful and kind, and I’ve since viewed religion in a much more positive light!

The Christian religion holidays were co-opted by Christian from other religions.
It’s only fair if someone else co-opted Christian holidays.

My religion teaches not to judge others and to accept them for their beliefs and who they are. Just because someone is not of the Christian faith, does not mean that they can’t celebrate Christmas. I mean Christmas is so ingrained into western society, that lots of people celebrate it without actually celebrating Christ.

I don’t hate or love “god”. I don’t know who/what “god” is. I don’t like the versions of the “creative force of the universe” put forth by the religions of the world. I “do” Christmas because family and friends do.
I have a coworker from China. The other day he said that no one in China is a Christian but that they celebrate Christmas. (He said it in general. There may be exceptions).

Personally, I don’t think somebody with hatred for God or religion should be allowed to celebrate religious holidays. If a person doesn’t believe in God , but is respectful about those who do, I don’t see a problem with it, but when people are hateful and disrespectful to those who are religious, I think it is hypocritical of them to take part in a religious holiday.
Hating religion is NOT the same as hating “god.”
I’m an atheist…my family does observe some Christian holidays because we have nice family traditions around and on them.

I never said it was, but thanks.
I didn’t say atheists shouldn’t celebrate Christian holidays. I said people (anybody) who are disrespectful to those who are Christian solely because of what they believe are hypocrites for celebrating Christmas.l and all the Christian holidays.

Wouldn’t that make Christians hypocrites for celebrating pagan holidays while hating the pagan religions?

I could have just as easily said that people who hate Jews shouldn’t celebrate Jewish holidays. I used Christianity because I know a lot of people who are very hateful toward Christians and Christianity but still celebrate their holidays.

The latest estimate is that there are about 31 million exceptions, or 2.1% of the population.

Wow, crazy stats. It takes 31 million to make 2.1% of the population! There’s a lot of people there.

Taoism and Confucianism are the majority religions, but there are not many major holidays in either religion. Aside from the New Year and Confucious’ birthday, the Chinese population would be bored all year without Christmas.

Well anybody should be able to celebrate anything they want reguardless of their beliefs. The real question is why would someone want to celebrate a holiday from a religion that they despise.

Maybe it’s the word “celebrate” that is causing the hang-ups. Not all holidays are to be celebrated. Some are simply for remembrance.
At the same time, why can’t an Atheist celebrate Christmas? True, an Atheist does not believe in a God or Jesus or whatever. But an Atheist can celebrate the spirit of Christmas as in “peace on Earth and goodwill…” and all of that. Christmas means different things to different people, not just celebrating the birth of Christ – on the wrong date I might add – or giving gifts.
Personally, I have no use for organized religion. Yet, Christmas is one of my favorite holidays because it seems to bring out the best in most people. I hang on to that with all my might.
