I couldn’t find a general thread for non-Beatle recordings on Apple, so I thought I’d start one. If there is one, just let me know and I’ll delete.

I came across this when reading Peter Doggett’s short-lived blog written around the time he released You Never Give Me Your Money : a cover of Carole King’s “Road to Nowhere” by Trash:

I bought the Apple box a few months ago. I really liked King of Fuh by Brute Force – I’d not heard it before, but had read plenty about it. It sounded quite different from how I expected.

Don’t play it loud if people around you are offended by the F word. Although that’s not really what he’s singing…

An article on the tragic demise of Badfinger. I didn’t realize that two songs I really like such as Day After Day were by them.

I posted this in another thread, but it fits here to so HA!

Been listening to this one a lot lately.

"Please don't bring your banjo back, I know where it's been..  I wasn't hardly gone a day, when it became the scene..  Banjos!  Banjos!  All the time, I can't forget that tune..  and if I ever see another banjo, I'm going out and buy a big balloon!"

Via Beatlefan – Amazon has a BBC release of Badfinger available for pre-order.

I kept thinking about this story as I listened to the song.

I loved Badfinger – had all their albums, and ‘Without You’ is just awesome.  I remember I was upset when I went to see Bangladesh in the cinema and they didn’t sing anything.

They talk about that in the Strange Fruit documentary, if you ever have a chance to see it.

Sad news: from Beatlefan, one of the original Apple Records artists, Jackie Lomax (“Sour Milk Sea”), passed away this weekend. [x-posted to the news thread]

Obituary in the Guardian, mentioning Lomax had finished an album before his passing. Also, I didn’t know Terry Richardson is his stepson.

What I find ironic about Apple is that with all the money leaking out they could have actually made a fortune if any of them had been able to pay more attention to their record division.  They had such a great core (no pun intended – sort of) of artists.  They should have stolen George Martin from EMI as their A&R person – sat back and watched the money roll in.

I think Ringo even made the same mistake in the early 1970s – started his own label and then it died when he couldn’t give it the attention needed?

George Martin, in fact, left EMI in 1965 to set up AIR (Associated Independent Recording) as a result of EMI not acknowledging in a financial manner all the success and riches he had brought the company since signing The Beatles. Thereafter EMI had to hire his services in, and as part of that he was able to demand a royalty on all his production work.

AIR quickly became one of the foremost independent production companies in the world, and his recording studio when opened was quickly regarded as one of the premier studios in the world – and still is. There is always the interesting question as to why, when The Beatles started using independent studios in London, they never used Martin’s? Perhaps they and Martin considered it would have been rubbing EMI’s nose in it too much – with them not only having to pay for his services, but also his studio.

My point in mentioning this however is that is incredibly unlikely that, in 1968, with his own hugely successful and in-demand business, he would have given it up to go and work for The Beatles. Now, had he still been at EMI that would have been different, as they did poach many EMI staff, and no doubt they would have poached George.

Am thinking about buying some old JT vinyls and vhs tapes over the net, and was doing some research.  Came across the following snippets in the James Taylor article in Wikipedia:

Taylor decided to try being a solo act and a change of scenery. In late 1967, funded by a small family inheritance, he moved to London, living variously in Notting Hill, Belgravia, and Chelsea.[29] He recorded some demos in Soho and, capitalizing on Kortchmar’s connection to The King Bees (who once opened for Peter and Gordon), took the demos to Peter Asher, who was A&R head for The Beatles‘ newly formed label Apple Records.[30] Asher showed the demos to Paul McCartney, who later said, “I just heard his voice and his guitar and I thought he was great … and he came and played live, so it was just like, ‘Wow, he’s great.'”[30] Taylor became the first non-British act signed to Apple.[30] Living chaotically in various places with various women, Taylor wrote additional material, including “Carolina in My Mind“, and rehearsed with a new backing band.[31] Taylor recorded what would become his first album from July to October 1968 at Trident Studios, at the same time The Beatles were recording The White Album.[31][32] McCartney and an uncredited George Harrison guested on “Carolina in My Mind“, whose lyric holy host of others standing around me referred to the Beatles, while the title phrase of Taylor’s “Something in the Way She Moves” provided the lyrical starting point for Harrison’s classic “Something

and this, showing how cool Paul is:

Apple Corps itself had fallen into chaos, with anarchic business planning and freeloaders taking advantage of it in every direction.[37] In early 1969, to clean up the situation, three of the Beatles brought in Allen Klein, who began purging Apple personnel.[38] Asher did not like Klein; he resigned of his own accord and offered to manage Taylor, to which Taylor agreed.[39] Klein wanted to hit Taylor with a $5-million lawsuit for leaving,[40] but McCartney (a Klein antagonist), and then the other Beatles, overruled him on the grounds that artists should not be holding each other to contracts.[39]

So Paul had a big influence in getting JT’s career started, and the Beatles connection is deeper than just that.  Thought you all might be interested…

Half of what I say is meaningless...

Interesting little detail there, thanks for posting it! If you want to talk about James Taylor, you might try asking Funny Paper her opinion – I think she’s one of the biggest JT fans on this forum. (I don’t care much for the guy myself but whaddo I know?)

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
