Oh, god. You’re not going to make me list all the depressing stuff I listened to last time I had my heart broken, are you?

The first song that comes to mind is Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast (there is no other song that speaks to me on such a deep level), but here are some others:

The Best Day – Atmosphere
Vienna – Billy Joel
One Too Many Mornings – Bob Dylan
The Light That Has Lighted The World – George Harrison
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
Without You – Harry Nilsson
Float On – Modest Mouse
All Too Well – Taylor Swift
How’s It Going To Be – Third Eye Blind

All living things must abide by the laws of the shape they inhabit

Lots of stuff by Pink Floyd but especially ‘Echoes’, ‘Breathe’, and ‘Time’. The music just Speak(s) To Me (pun intended) on spiritual levels, but I also empathise deeply with the lyrics of the latter two.

Martha My Dear for obvious reasonsa-hard-days-night-george-9 + dozens of other Beatles&co. songs… ‘Across The Universe ‘ (Nothing’s gonna change my world… sometimes we all need that reminder), ‘Blow Away’, ‘Mother Nature’s Son ‘ (all day long I’m sitting singing songs for everyone), ‘Run Of The Mill ‘ (’tis just good stuff), ‘Some People Never Know’ (this is my mantra sometimes. Gotta remind yourself who/what counts)…

‘Endlessly’, ‘Map Of The Problematique’, and ‘Invincible’ by Muse. The first I can relate to for personal reasons, the second… it’s a combination of the music and me singing the chorus whilst doing maths ‘I can’t get it RIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAIIIAAAAAIIIAOAAIIIIIGHT’ a-hard-days-night-george-10, and the third… it’s kind of uplifting when I feel discouraged about what I’m going to do with my post-academic life.

‘Dominoes’ by Syd Barrett, because… reasons. It’s hard impossible to explain Syd Barrett, but the feeling I get from the song is something I relate to.

I’ve also been feeling ‘Ramble On’ by Led Zeppelin lately — I think it’s the autumn air. There’s just one thing I got to do… RAMBLEON

Most of the songs are up there for their touching lyrics, but Nightswimming is what I used to always play on piano.

"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"

-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

For me, the most personal songs are:

The Smiths – Asleep

Morrissey – I Am Hated For Loving

Morrissey – Late Night, Maudlin Street

Smashing Pumpkins – 1979

The Cure – Boys Don’t Cry

Violent Femmes – Good Feeling

The Beach Boys – I Just Wasn’t Made For The Times

The Beatles – In My Life

John Lennon God

David Bowie – Quicksand

“While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I’m a naysayer and hatchet man in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I’ll gladly take another - because I choose to live my life in the company of Ghandi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. I love you, Sheriff Truman.”

With either full or select lyrics.

Me‘ – Kendall Payne

“We never know what’s gonna make us,
Into the people that we are.
Can’t tell the toll that it will take on us,
Until the wounds have turned to scars.
We never know what’s gonna break us,
When will it finally go too far?

Now would you be kind to me
If you knew my memories?
They helped you understand
Why this means everything
Why It’s So Hard and why I am the way I am.

‘Cause there’s a chance, there’s a shot,
It may be small, but it’s all I got.
I know it’s hard now to see, but you have to believe,
That there is hope to be healed, to be whole,
To be finally free. So don’t give up on me.
Please, please, don’t give up on me.

Now I am aware of where I’m broken,
And I can see it breaks us down.
I’m overcome with my emotions,
I can’t lift my heart up Off The Ground .

And so you trigger me
The bullets of memories
They pierce me once again.
But I don’t want to be wounded forever,
I just want to understand.”

Before Believing‘ – Emmylou Harris

“Winter
Summer season has taken over
It’s quiet
Like new fallen snow
I told you summer stories but outside is getting mighty cold
I told you everything I could about me
Told you everything I could”

Breathe‘ – Kylie Minogue

“Don’t blame me just because I am bored
I’m needy, I need to taste it all
Don’t doubt me just because I am quiet
I’m thinking, thinking about it all

I’m helpless about the way of me
I’m thinking, thinking about it all
I’m sorting everything inside”

Strawberry Fields Forever‘ – The Beatles

“Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It’s getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
It doesn’t matter much to me”

"I told you everything I could about me, Told you everything I could" ('Before Believing' - Emmylou Harris)

Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues I feel really does.

When you’re lost in the rain in Juarez when it’s Easter time, too
And your gravity fails and negativity don’t pull you through
Don’t put on any airs when you’re down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there and they really make a mess outta you
Now, if you see Saint Annie, please tell her thanks a lot
I cannot move, my fingers are all in a knot
I don’t have the strength to get up and take another shot
And my best friend, my doctor, won’t even say what it is I’ve got
Sweet Melinda, the peasants call her the goddess of gloom
She speaks good English and she invites you up into her room
And you’re so kind and careful not to go to her too soon
And she takes your voice and leaves you howling at the moon
Up on Housing Project Hill, it’s either fortune or fame
You must pick one or the other, though neither of them are to be what they claim
If you’re lookin’ to get silly, you better go back to from where you came
Because the cops don’t need you, and man, they expect the same
Now, all the authorities, they just stand around and boast
How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms into leaving his post
And picking up Angel, who just arrived here from the coast
Who looked so fine at first but left looking just like a ghost
I started out on burgundy but soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they’d stand behind me when the game got rough
But the joke was on me, there was nobody even there to bluff
I’m going back to New York City, I do believe I’ve had enough

There have been so many times I’ve heard this song and its closely spoke to me about some part of my life. They are the perfect mix of narrative, abstract, and personal.

That’s Not Me and Out On the Weekend really touched me in highschool.
