Ray Manzarek is one of the best organists in rock history. Whether or not you like The Doors’ sound, they achieved success and completely broke all the rules in a way very few bands had done. I love their originality.

I’m not denying the quality of what they played, just the tones and timbres of what they played it on. Though compared to Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or literally any other late 60s band/early 70s band, they are utterly outclassed instrumentally.

Compare it to other rock organists though, such as John Paul Jones on Your Time Is Gonna Come, and it just sounds boring. They’re not that bad, just an extremely overrated band and I think it’s an outrage that they achieved success when The Velvet Underground didn’t.
It may sound weird, but the patchy organ sound has a certain charm to it. Then again I haven’t listened to a ton of The Doors, but the stuff I have listened to I’ve enjoyed.

Yeah, I really appreciate that Manzarek used that reedy Vox instead of the standard Hammond that was most common at the time. And Krieger was a very versatile guitarist, with his bottleneck playing and flamenco and sitar imitations.
It’s possible to consider them kinda overrated while believing they were still very, very good much of the time…I do.

I hope i don’t get hate for this but i think that AC/DC is overrated. Let’s be honest here, all of their songs sound the same.

As an Australian, where AC/DC is steeped in our blood, I completely and utterly agree. For the same reason.

They all sound the exact same. But at least that one song is better than anything Guns N Roses ever put out.

Guns n Roses don’t get rated that highly to begin with. It’s generally accepted that while AFD is a very, very good rock album, 75% of what they’ve put out since has been mediocre. Though I would say ‘Civil War’ and ‘Coma’ are both fantastic songs and miles above anything AC/DC’s done.

I think Nirvana get rated a bit tol high, but they are enormously influential, and I won’t deny that Nevermind is one of the best albums of its decade. As far as grunge goes though, they have nothing on the Smashing Pumpkins.

I tried to like the Punkins, bought their first three, and appreciate Corgan’s gifts as a guitarist and conceptualist, but absolutely couldn’t stand his singing, and that was a deal breaker.
I don’t really think they were “grunge” tho, inasmuch as that term even has a meaning. They owed as much to Queen and prog in general as to any of the Seattle bands, and they were well-produced rather than muddy and clotted, guitarwise.

I’m torn between arguing “yeah and that’s part of why they were great!” and pointing out subtle differences in shading. I do much prefer the incomparable Bon Scott to Brian Johnson.

Sweet Child Of Mine is so overrated so i’d say that Guns N’ Roses are overrated.

Brian sounds very similar to Bon, at least to me.
Anyways, i think The Rolling Stones are overrated.

Billy’s voice is what makes it for me. I love his snarly tone, but I can see why one wouldn’t like it. He is certainly one of the greatest musical minds of his era: the scope and ambition of Melon Collie alone are unmatched in the decade. As for the second point, the mix of classic rock/prog and grunge is another reason I like them so much as it mixes my alternative tendencies with my more conventional taste.

How is sweet child o mine overrated though, @Dark Overlord ? To me it’s perfect: the guitar solo is fantastic, the intro is iconic etc etc. One of the best hard rock songs of the 80s for sure, and easily GNR’s best song for me.

i will never understand that mindset. Them being iconic and popular is a good thing, because they are objectively good riffs/melodies. They’re not overrated at all.

It’s about overplaying them. For example, i think Here Comes The Sun is a good song but because it’s been played a million times, i don’t like it that much.

That doesn’t take away from the quality of the song though. Songs don’t get worse with multiple listens, just more annoying.

I think Sweet Child o’ Mine is objectively a very good song, enough though I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to listen to it.
@Dark Overlord given that a number of albums by the Rolling Stones are generally considered some of the greatest ever, I’d struggle to call them overrated.
How many albums by Queen are deemed so highly?
