I’ve always been curious what life is like in Oz since I was a little kid and heard that they celebrate Krimble in the middle of summer. My wife went on a business trip to Melbourne once and said it reminded her of Vancouver, Canada which doesn’t seem possible. Guess I need to plan a trip…maybe Timothy and Holey can suggest an itinerary.

Life in Oz is… Probably fairly similar to most Western countries. It’s obviously warmer, and by and large the cities are designed for ease of walking if desired. One significant difference is that we swear a lot more – that stereotype is definitely true.
Krimble in summer is fantastic – everyone spends it outside, and generally speaking most families will amble down to the local park at about 4/5pm when it cools off to mingle with others in the neighbourhood, kick a ball around, etc. From what I hear, we do have a much stronger culture of spending time outside in general though.
Without having been to Vancouver I couldn’t say for sure but suspect the similarities are because of the progressive/green spaces/high livability/artsy aspects.

Thanks Holey, those Krimble traditions sound very nice. Come to think of it, when I lived in Hawaii the traditions were also based more around outdoor activities. The first time we saw a Santa in shorts was a bit of a cultural shock.
I showed Madame Butterfly (hehe) your post and she said you nailed the connection to Vancouver. In addition both cities are set on water which kind of creates a relaxed ambience. Our last 3 year travel plan 20-22 lies in taters, so we are creating a new 23-25 one which I hope includes Oz. Hey, if I could ask what is it like to drive there (for someone from the US)? My thoughts are Uber.taxi in the cities but driving in the “countryside” is on fairly straight roads for long distances. Like Tim says he is heading for the Gold Coast. Is that doable for someone who is accustomed to driving on the right-side? (Note-driving in the Scottish Highlands freaked me out).

I finished my first year of uni the other day! Now I’ve just got to finish and submit my assignments. I’ve made some cool friends as well as got several opportunities to perform on my instruments. I sung for my last performance the other day which was nerve-racking and I forgot the lyrics for a large portion of my song but was able to bring it back around for the outro. It was a necessary experience on the road towards conquering that fear I guess.
Anyways, I felt like reading through and having a laugh at some old threads on here today. I miss stuff like Smiley adventures and the BB house! Hope everyone in Forumpool is doing well and I’ll try visiting more frequently in this time I have off. Looking forward to what the future has to offer!

Not at all uncommon here!

Yep, the fact that we’re set on water helps a lot.
Not having driven in the US I couldn’t tell you definitively but from what I gather, the drivers are on average better – less road rage, people are good with indicators, etc. It’s just the directions you need to worry about, in the inner city (which I imagine you’d do a lot of) it can get really confusing – ubers will work but our public transport is good so I’d suggest that for cities, it’ll save money. Oh and also – if the speed limit is 70km/h, don’t do anything above that. You *will* be booked, unlike USA.
For driving in the country-side, it’ll be pretty easy. Just do everything you’re used to but on the wrong side and there isn’t much to go wrong – the roads are generally a bit wider than the Scottish highlands iirc. The highways/rural roads are easier to drive than the city roads, imo.
And if you do end up deciding to come to Oz, if you want some suggestions in planning I’d be happy to help – I’m sure Timothy might be too

The Scottish highlands road can be very tight, very bendy, animals lazily randomly wandering across roads (sometimes they need to take a rest in the road), no barriers at the sides so you can drive into ditches, no phone signal for miles and mad people thinking they are on a straight motorway in the sunshine all by themselves so drive at insane speeds. All that is made up for by the scenery however.
There is no better place to be when you’re waiting for death as you’ve crashed into a ditch after swerving first to avoid the sheep having a sunbathe in the road then the idiot who came flying past and you cannot phone anyone.

Thanks Holey! We’ll need to sort out best time of year when we get things figured out. I told my wife we’ll need to plan around Schwarzewolke touring schedule.
mmm, LOL! You have nailed the experience. I remember at times thinking both the local drivers and the sheep were suicidal. However it was so beautiful and the fear of driving made us spend far more time hiking than sightseeing (which was great).

What’s happening in my life: Got my first proper job, quit smoking (started vaping), saw several of my all-time favourite films on the big screen over the last two years, going to Liverpool soon. So things are pretty good around here.

I hope to visit Liverpool sometime in my life MMD. I’d like to be able to stay for a few weeks. I always imagined hanging out around Penny Lane and cajoling a banker, fireman, pieman, barber, and nurse to take location appropriate pictures with me. Hopefully it doesn’t turn out that’s something they are constantly being bugged about.

Ahhh Mom is having knee replacement surgery on May 2nd. I am thankful that my workplace allows us to use up to 72 hours of our sick leave to take care of family members. I’ll take a vacation day too to make it a full two weeks that I can help her.

I walked 34km (21 miles for those that way inclined) yesterday with a friend. Why? We felt like it…
I’m damn tired today, that’s for sure, but surprisingly not that sore.

I deliberately didn’t listen to music for the week I was away. I now have my earphones in and I’m listening to The Beatles – it sounds so good. I can hear it all so more clearly than before it seems.

ARRGH stupid impacted-earwax blockage messing up my hearing – how am I supposed to listen to the Beatles (or anybody!) thru headphones when my right ear is barely functioning?! This happens every several months or so, usually takes care of itself; if it doesn’t I’ll see a medical specialist to drain it out. But it’s still very annoying.
