I hate it when I wake up depressed for no reason and that stays throughout the day, even if I’ve been doing alright for the last few months

That happened to me a lot after my fiancee left.  It still happens occasionally.

Recently, I’ve been becoming rather depressed.

At my age, Covid wouldn’t kill me, which makes it not too big of a deal for survival, but it is ruining the lots of fun things for me. It’s also very threatening to loved ones, which is pretty damn scary.

Is my one shot at existence going to end over something I can’t control?

Such is the great question which philosophers, artists, and everyday Magills have wrestled with since time immemorial – all of us mortal souls, whose existences may end at any time. It’s why Dylan Thomas wrote “Do not go gentle into that dark night” and it’s why Beowulf chose to try and slay the dragon instead of fading away quietly – he chose a fighter’s end, to go down swingin’ as Tom Petty wrote about. It’s something that George wrestled with most of his life, preparing himself to let go.

All I’m trying to say is, the answer is quite possibly yes, but you’re certainly not alone in asking it, if that’s any consolation. Hopefully the questions and answers that others have asked and found may help guide you to the answer that best works for you.

(Also, ebola is fairly hard to catch, as far as I’m aware, and I believe that there are vaccines either available or in development for it…)

In my life: spring break, and god knows I need it. a-hard-days-night-george-4

Funny you should mention that @Beatlebug a-hard-days-night-george-9. We are in full winter into spring mode here with a yard full of birds chirping, trees in bloom, planted bulbs exploding, and the neighborhood kitties chasing each other around. Something I have noticed the last few years is my changing attitude toward the winter months. I used to pray for the sun and greenery and couldn’t wait for spring and summer to arrive. Now I find a great appreciation for the fallow way as described in Judy’s song. It’s almost as if my thoughts are clearer.

I’ll learn to love the fallow way
When winter draws the valley down
And stills the rivers in their storm
And freezes all the little brooks
Time when our steps slow to the song
Of falling flakes and crackling flames
When silver stars are high and still
Deep in the velvet of the night sky

Thanks, @Beatlebug, that helps a lot. I do believe that life is a great thing that everyone should make the most of. I’m glad Ebola is hard to catch, as I could get a vaccine before it goes nuts, if it ever does (I hope it doesn’t). All I’m saying is I need a long life to do the things I love.

Yeah, I appreciate every season in its time. This winter has been unwontedly long and wet and this semester I have had an especially difficult workload. Finally the sun is shining and the daffodils are coming out and I can focus on getting some things done that aren’t precalculus! a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Well, I’ll need to start looking for another job. I’ve been working for a member of parliament and they lost their seat in a landslide election here in WA. I can’t do anything about it. I’ll send out my resume soon for more jobs. I have good experience and references. If I can get to an interview I’m confident I can make a good impression. It is what it is.

That election has been amazing – I watched it last night. Biggest victory on the state level ever in Australia iirc.

The joys of your phone busting in lockdown and not being able to replace it as quickly as you normally would.

Seems my Housing Association has been trying to get hold of me, with little luck because they’ve been ringing rather than send an email.

Today they decided to send out a Housing Officer to see me, who it seems spent nearly an hour knocking on the door with me asleep inside. Her knocks cannot have been that loud, and she couldn’t have used the door buzzer, and didn’t raise me as I’d only been asleep a couple of hours, so she called the police, worried I might be dead!

Their much louder knocking quickly woke me, and I open the door – after pulling on some trousers – to four police in masks and a housing officer, luckily who I knew.

“We were worried about you and about to break in your door. We haven’t been able to contact you by phone and your well being became a concern. We thought you could be dead.”

To paraphrase Donovan: Not yet, you feckers! Not yet!
