This is a bit different from other Desert Island Disc things. In this, you get to choose the 10 (studio) albums to be the only ones you can listen to for the rest of your life. But, here’s a twist: you can take an eleventh album, with 14 songs that aren’t on the 10 you already chose.

Here’s mine:

  1. Revolver , The Beatles
  2. Kid A, Radiohead
  3. American Idiot, Green Day
  4. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard , Paul McCartney
  5. Nevermind, Nirvana
  6. Abbey Road , The Beatles
  7. In Utero, Nirvana
  8. Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin
  9. LOVE, The Beatles (yep)
  10. Rubber Soul , The Beatles

And here’s my 11th album:

  1. Paranoid Android-OK Computer-Radiohead
  2. Maybe I’m Amazed McCartneyPaul McCartney
  3. Purple Haze-Are You Experienced-Jimi Hendrix
  4. About A Girl-Bleach-Nirvana
  5. Bohemian Rhapsody-A Night At The Opera-Queen
  6. If I Should Fall From Grace With God If I Should Fall From Grace With God -The Pogues
  7. There There-Hail To The Thief-Radiohead
  8. YYZ-Moving Pictures-Rush
  9. Band On The Run Band On The Run -Wings
  10. Pot Kettle Black-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-Wilco
  11. Venus And Mars /Rock Show-Venus And Mars -Wings (shut up, it counts)
  12. Beautiful Day-All That You Can’t Leave Behind-U2
  13. Train In Vain-London Calling-The Clash
  14. A Day In The Life Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band-The Beatles

I thought for a while about that. It was hard.

So, what would your 10+1 be?

I’m gonna cheat here. I don’t want to take any of my “favourite” albums because I basically know ’em all by heart anyways! (And there’s already been a thread or two for a desert-island-top-ten anyways…) And instead of taking single albums, I’m gonna go with box sets because…well, because I didn’t see a rule specifying “no box sets!” Box sets of stuff I haven’t heard, or haven’t heard all of, or at least haven’t memorized all of. (And some of these boxes maybe don’t even exist, except in my fantasies. They’d be the size of suitcases!):

1. John Coltrane, The Heavyweight Champion: Complete Atlantic Recordings
2. Miles Davis, Complete Quintet Recordings 1965-1968
3. Ornette Coleman, Beauty Is A Rare Thing: Complete Atlantic Recordings
4. Beethoven, Complete Works
5. Mozart, Complete Works (170 CDs in a box!)
6. Igor Stravinsky, Complete Works
7. Charles Mingus, Complete Atlantic Recordings
8. Jimi Hendrix, Complete Recordings
9. Lee Morgan, Complete Blue Note Recordings

And, what the heck, since I’ve not given it enough attention:

10. The Beatles, Mono Box

    1) Beatles – Abbey Road (I will NEVER tire of this album)

    2) The Who – Who’s Next (Not a weak song in the bunch)

    3) Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left (For the times I feel depressed that I can no longer listen to more than 10 albums)

    4) Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon (Too obv)

    5) Howard Shore – Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Complete Soundtrack (YES I AM ABLE)

    6) Black Sabbath – Paranoid (More solid than heavy metal)

    7) Fleetwood Mac – Rumours (I’m a sucker for this masterwork)

    8) Led Zeppelin – IV (Personal favorites: Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks)

    9) Radiohead – OK Computer (OP saying Kid A got me thinking about how well that album flows, but I simply love OKC too much to Let It Down )

    10) Miles Davis – Kind of Blue (The chillest album ever)

    11:

Ramble On – Led Zeppelin (Represents everything hard rock can be)

All Along the Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix (Absolutely cosmic)

Strawberry Fields Forever – The Beatles (Also unreal)

Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys (The ultimate uplifting song)

Tales of Brave Ulysses – Cream (It’s just so weirdly intense and is continually interesting to listen to)

Number of the Beast – Iron Maiden (In fact, just give me the intro on a loop; that’ll do)

Five Years – David Bowie (In fact, just give me that drum beat on a loop)

Live at Carnegie Hall: Sing, Sing, Sing – Benny Goodman (The solos in this version are too god damn amazing)

Take Five – Dave Brubeck (If I could only carry on jazz song for all eternity…)

Free Ride – Nick Drake (More depression)

Optimistic – Radiohead (Just to take one Kid A track from the mix!)

21st Century Schizoid Man – King Crimson (Wowza! What a track)

Sounds of Silence – Simon and Garfunkel (Pop legends)

I’m Waiting For my Man – Velvet Underground (Infectious driving beat and completely rock and roll)

I find Moving Pictures overrated (Still love it though) and 2112 would be third. And IV is my favourite Led Zeppelin album but since I’ve grown tired of stairway to heaven the whole album might do the same so I picked my second favourite :p
