We’ll have to differ over the referee 😉

And hey, a cup final. I wonder which United will turn up??

Hi,nice to meet you @trcanberra. Yeah,I watched the game at the weekend. Thought Spurs shaded the first half, but then they do what Spurs do,namely mess up a good thing. Saying that,United played well 2nd half, especially Sanchez, and deserved to win. I think they’ll beat Chelsea. Mourinho normally wins the big games, and Chelsea have been poor of late.

As for Liverpool,a big game coming up against Roma in (looks at watch) 3 hours time, and I’m pretty nervous. I think we’ll be OK if we do what we did against City at home (keep a clean sheet). Fingers crossed for Liverpool

@trcanberra: Yeah, really annoying,as I thought we pretty much dominated. Roma offered very little as an attacking force, but I think we’ve done enough. I can see us scoring over there, but yeah, still slightly frustrated. The penalty award is a joke really, but we knocked 5 past them,so can’t be too greedy ahdn_john_08_gif

Just a mention about the Liverpool fan who was attacked with a belt outside a pub by some Roma fans. Disgusting, and hope the guy is OK. Unfortunately,Roma have form for doing that kind of thing. Sad

Not that much of a big football fan but I support Liverpool for obvious reasons. I visited their stadium during me visit too.

So,last week, Liverpool get denied a penalty when one of our players gets pushed over in the box,one of the West Brom players then punched one of our players in the stomach and gets away with it,then doesn’t even get banned when the ‘panel’ look at the footage retrospectively, and this week,we are denied another clear penalty when the Stoke player handles the ball in the penalty area, yet more poor refereeing.

It makes me so angry that managers have to give interviews after a game, and give comments on incidents etc,yet referees in this league make mistakes week after week, yet are never asked to go in front of a camera and explain their decisions,or apologize when they get a decision so badly wrong. Liverpool were crap today, but it was a clear penalty, the linesman is looking right at the incident, and yet it still wasn’t given. The refereeing standard in the English league is a joke and a disgrace, and has been for some time.blue-meanie

Man City had a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside in the second league of the Champions League quarter-finals against Liverpool; referees are seen to be utter crap by all fans in all countries and almost always against their own club.

Tho in Scotland they are truly shit.

ahdn_paul_06 Agreed @meanmistermustard. Frustration got the better of me yesterday with that post. 2 games in the last 2 weeks where we should have won and messed it up. If we throw away Champions League qualification from here,I’d be devastated. 2 shots on target at home yesterday against a team who are truly awful, and have been fighting against relegation for months is not good. As for the Man City goal, yeah I agree. We also got away with what looked like a penalty for a foul on Raheem Sterling,so yeah, we’ve had our fair share of luck too.

Just read as well that it’s likely that Steven Gerrard will be the new Glasgow Rangers manager. That will be interesting in the Old Firm games, with his old manager Brendan Rodgers in charge of Celtic. That one came out of left field, but it’s an amazing opportunity for Gerrard. I suspect that he’ll be the Liverpool manager one day,so it’s good for him to go away and get a bit of experience first

Gerrard would be utterly mad to go to Rangers. Behind the scenes the club is a mess and the expectations of trying to surpass Celtic by the fans are wildly out of proportion to reality. Rangers should not be getting destroyed by Celtic but the gap between the clubs is massive and not going to change soon.

McInness, at Aberdeen, had a look into it and backed off.

@meanmistermustard: Thanks for that. I had no idea things were as bad as that behind the scenes at Rangers, and yeah, I remember reading about McInnes potentially going there last year, but he decided to stay loyal to Aberdeen (if I remember rightly, they were playing each other in a match while all the speculation was going on, and McInnes was criticised for forgetting his players name in his after match interview. To be fair, his head would have been all over the place I’m guessing.)

I watched Match Of The Day last night,to get the highlights of the Arsenal v Man United game, and both Ian Wright and Alan Shearer were in agreement that it was a good move for Gerrard. Shearer was saying that,if Rangers could attract Gerrard, presumably he’d been promised funds etc by the board, and that Gerrard would be able to attract top players to Rangers “because of who he is”. Wright replied by saying that it was a good move for him as “he only has to beat one team” (presumably Celtic),which I thought was a tad disrespectful to the likes of Aberdeen and Hearts, who are decent sides in their own right. I look forward to seeing how it works out for him,if he does indeed get the job.

While we’re on the subject of Rangers,ex Rangers player Joey Barton will be taking over a lower league English team as manager next season (if memory serves, I think it’s Fleetwood Town),so that will be,er, ‘interesting’ to say the least. Can’t see Joey Barton as a manager myself, but hey,he may do well there ahdn_paul_01

The English media have no idea about Scottish Football so I will ignore what two pundits, who look and base their entire views on fours games a season, all four Rangers v Celtic derbies, have to say. They look at Rangers with gooey eyes that are based on 10 years ago and like to promote and maintain the myth they are still the same huge club when they are not (many in the Scottish media do the same). The board promise money which they haven’t so borrow/get soft loans or use ticket money, there is zero building for the future, the reason being they are expected/demanded to match Celtic. For a few weeks the Scottish media built up a Rangers v Celtic match as a huge game for where the title would go and had it down as Rangers almost back to where they should be – needless to say they got beat and reality set in. If they spent four seconds looking at the table they will find that Aberdeen are second, three points ahead of Rangers who are level with Hibs, with three games to go and all three teams to play each other – Celtic are miles ahead of all three – but why bother with how it is when you make believe it’s 2006.

Ask many Scottish football fans and they would happily see Rangers and Celtic move to another league and the rest get on with our game.

Joey Barton is an absolute joke in Scottish football. He came up with the attitude that our game was shit, he would bully all the teams, and be the big man. He got sent packing after 3/4 months after falling out with his own players and club, finding it’s a damn difficult league to be in. Not that that’s how he remembers it.

Barton’s finest moment in Scottish football – remember this was someone who came up here with a hardman reputation who made it out that he would rule our game (the challenge is shocking but taken into context it’s hilarious)

Agree with you @meanmistermustard. Rangers had to start all over again as they were demoted down the leagues, and that rebuilding process is still going on I would suggest, yet people like Ian Wright obviously believe that they’re still the Rangers of old. Celtic are miles ahead of the others as you say (shown once again at the weekend, when they hammered Rangers 5-0),and tend to cherrypick the best players from the teams lower down the league, very similar to what Bayern Munich do in the German league for example. The other teams like Aberdeen,Hearts and Hibernian deserve some recognition, but all too often, it’s Celtic and Rangers who make all the headlines. Sad but predictable.

As for Celtic and Rangers leaving the SPL,I noticed a comment from Brendan Rodgers a while back, where he suggested that if Celtic were in the English Premier League, they’d be a top 4 team. Absolutely no chance. Rodgers does come out with odd statements at times, and that was one I particularly enjoyed reading(he’s being linked with the Arsenal job once Wenger leaves his post,it’ll be interesting to see what he chooses to do if he does get offered it).

As for Barton, the guy is a clown. He once said that he should be picked for England,as he was the best midfielder in the league, this coming at a time when Gerrard,Vieira,Scholes and Lampard were all in the league. I remember a game at Anfield when Gerrard took the ball off him and whacked it past the keeper from long range, something Joey Barton never did as far as I’m aware. He was an average player with a big head who thought he was better than he was

Rangers were not demoted. The club was liquidated due to running up massive debts which it couldnt repay and therefore stopped existing. A new Rangers was voted into league two after the SFA and many club SPL chairmen tried to force them into the Championship, contrary to the rules, with wild tales of financial Armageddon and social unrest in the papers. Fans of the clubs resorted to threatening to not buy season tickets and turn their backs on Scottish football if the rules weren’t followed. The clubs started listening to their fans and the new Rangers were admitted into league three.

Demoted makes it out they were punished, they were not. The rules were followed correctly – eventually .

Thanks for clarifying @meanmistermustard. Murty has now been sacked by Rangers. Seems a matter of time before Gerrard is appointed. His good mate Danny Murphy says that the only thing holding up the deal is that Steven wants assurances over his transfer budget
