My gift to the likes of @trcanberra and @meanmistermustard!

The topic is discussed enough that it deserves it’s own thread. And this is not because I’m not a big sports fan – no, no – but because I genuinely care about your interests!

a-hard-days-night-paul-11 Enjoy!

(P.S. This isn’t for American Football unless a coup occurs somehow removing all those who think soccer is a stupid made up word.
Seriously America, you couldn’t have thought of a new name for the sport? It doesn’t really apply to the game, it’s just stolen!
Should call it sissy rugby!
Carry on…)

But your lack of resources is pretty much what lead to the search for more land and that eventually created America. At least you’re safe! ahdn_paul_01

I meant the UK as a whole, not Scotland. I wasn’t sure mmm meant the US invading Scotland for oil or the UK.

This topic has really failed so far…

I tried watching football this summer at my friend’s house, but I fell asleep. I can handle watching American football, but soccer football is torture. paul-mccartneypaul-mccartney

Laughing loudly.

Our cable company decided to stop service to our little community so I recently got DISH tv/service/whateveryoucallit. Lots more opportunities to watch football.

As i said elsewhere the most recent bit of a game of American football i saw (when they were playing at Wembley in London) consisted of the guys in the studio having a chat before going back to the game at restart which lasted for 7 seconds before they all stopped for a chat, hugs and drinks. It wasnt even the end of the quarter or a touchdown. I promptly posted my annoyance on here before turning over. I cant be bothered with all that.

“Soccer” is a British term – not one invented by Americans.

In the original American Football, a team got more points from kicking than from running or passing, wherefore “foot”ball. Presumably because passing and running are more exciting and involve more strategy than kicking a ball through goal posts, the balance gradually shifted. (Any other theories?) But wait. We’re talking about the “kicking the ball around” football in this thread.

Go the Pack!!

Oh, erm, Manchester United??  Okay then; one good game so far this season.  If we string a few together and don’t get another 43 injuries in the next third of the season, who knows how we could go.

“Strange isn’t it. As soon as you get one defender back (Evans) you lose another (Smalling). There must be a reason for it as its been happening for a few seasons and not just under van Gaal as i remember Ferguson commenting on injury crises for the last few years he was in charge and Moyes had the same problems. But somehow Man U won, how i’ll never know.”

I’m wondering if it is the type of grass they have on the pitch at Old Trafford and Carrington.  The AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) here in Canberra did a study a few years back on these sorts of injuries in all of the football codes here in Oz and recommended a new type of grass – it’s our new sporting secret weapon :)

From my very hazy memory the study concluded that the type of grass that clubs had moved to in recent years to prevent those old barren pitches from the 90s also tends to catch on the studs of the players and leads to muscle injuries – which is mostly what our players have been getting.  I mean, 43 injuries before Christmas?

Then this thread should be called Association football since that what Wikipedia calls it

Back on topic with “Association football”, I’m a Spurs fan. Very disappointing, losing  or drawing games they should be easily winning, like against Newcastle or Crystal Palace.

Well, Newcastle did just turn Chelsea over as well if that is any (small) consolation.
