Country has some decent artists and songs but not many standout artists I like except for Emmylou Harris who I love; one of only three acts (Beatles and solo counting as one) who I can listen to for an extended period and not get fed up with. I heard her perform ‘Luxury Liner’ on BBC 4 one night, loved it, went exploring and now have all her albums. As said before she could sing the telephone book and I would be happy to sit and listen.

I don’t like too much modern country, although I listen to Taylor Swift. Older country I can appreciate. but it’s not my favorite.

I’ve found the whole programme, and from what I’ve seen (about halfway through) it is good. The print ain’t great, but the audio is better than the clip I posted earlier (there’s none of the sound drop-out on Nashville Skyline Rag). Highly recommend:

If YT is to be believed, it’s been posted by David Hoffman, the director of it. He (if it is him) says this of it:

I made this feature-length documentary at a time when the great Earl Scruggs was going through many changes in terms of his music and his political persuasions. I found him an extraordinary man open to many different kinds of ideas. I hope that this film after all these years, still carries that message to his many millions of fans and other viewers. All of the others that appeared, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Doc Watson, The Byrds, Charlie Daniels and others, were honored to play alongside Earl Scruggs.

The song list, though far from in the correct order, according to IMDb, includes:

Songs by performer: JOAN BAEZ My Home’s Across Blue Ridge Mountains, Love Is Just A Four Letter Word, It Ain’t Me Babe, I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine, If I Were A Carpenter THE BYRDS Nothin’ To It, You Ain’t Goin Nowhere BOB DYLAN East Virginia Blues, Nashville Skyline Rag BILL MONROE Little Maggie, Nine Pound Hammer THE MORRIS BROTHERS Salty Dog Blues, Flint Hill Special, On Top Of Old Smokey DOC WATSON John Hardy, Home Sweet Home, Cripple Creek.

Honestly, the only country music I can tolerate is the Beatles’.

Although i consider older Taylor Swift like Love Story to be country, i think her newer songs like Shake It Off are pop and not country at all.

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Yeah, Taylor Swift’s last album was all pop as opposed to the country pop that her other 4 albums were.

That Emmylou Harris tune is wonderful but too fast to hootenanny to. I knew a little of Ian & Sylvia, Neil Young covered one of their songs. I have a love/hate relationship with country, when it’s bad its awful, when it’s good it’s amazing.

I haven’t listened to enough country music to judge it as a genre, but i’d say that I prefer older country music (i.e. Johnny Cash etc.).

Although it isn’t stricly country, I find bluegrass pretty interesting. I quite like Alison Krauss’ version of I Will .

Alison Kraus is an angel. She’s made a great album with Robert Plant, but also has a multitude of great albums. I saw her open for Willie Nelson one time, and that was a great show.

It should be a crime to look like that and sing like that. Any reasonable person would be satisfied with only one of those blessings.

Alison Krause has some gorgeous songs but nothing that gets me seeking her out. Actually I did for a few albums but, like with so many artists, it got too similar and I got turned off.

I love country music and I practice daily on my out-of-tune cockamamie ukulele.

I'm Necko.  I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

I'm also ewe2 on weekends.

Most likely to post things that make you go hmm... 2015, 2016, 2017.

I don’t listen to country music much, but I do listen to some artists that have country songs/albums that I enjoy (Bob Dylan, T Swift, Richy). Then I’ve got an album by Shania Twain and another one by Sheryl Crow that I like, and I like a handful of songs by Johnny Cash, but that’s it, really. I can’t stand current country music that plays on the radio. It’s honestly torture when I’m in the car with someone and that’s what they choose to listen to.

Sheryl Crow has some great material in her catalogue.

Don’t really attribute it her to country tho despite releasing a country album.

I’ll just leave this here:

@meanmistermustard which Emmylou Harris albums do you especially recommend? She’s done quite a few.

@ewe2.

‘Pieces of the Sky’, ‘Elite Hotel’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ are generally held to be her best work, both by critics and fans. All three are excellent with the first two featuring a Beatles cover each: ‘For No One ‘ and ‘Here, There And Everywhere ‘ respectively.

I really like ‘Brand New Dance’, tho it did take a while to get into as it sounds very much of its time, and ‘Evangeline’ as well.
